I used to find http://java-apps.org/ useful, but it seems to be defunct. The wayback machine has it archived

Hm. Can't download anything, though; all downloads are re-directed back to the "defunct" (Madricio Titanes) website.....or so it appears!

Yes, downloading is hit & mostly miss. So if I'm interested in an app, I just copy the name & try & locate
the app on github or sourceforge.

As an example, for the chemical elements quiz, if you edit the link:

https://web.archive.org/web/20160813231 ... ments-quiz

to:

http://www.oligalma.com/en/downloads/ja ... ments-quiz

and open in a new tab, it takes you to the website, where you can download the zipped jar file.

gtk-apps.org & qt-apps.org are similarly defunct.

Also, with wayback machine. if you're really after a file, it's worth trying different timelines as some will have functioning links
for archives.

@Grey :-

In a word, NO. What there is, is in a very poor state of development; I suspect either there wasn't much interest in the first place, or what few devs were doing anything with it have given up & lost interest.

I use TextAloud!, running under WINE. I found quite a good free source for the AT&T 'Natural Voices' (around 700 MB each), but TBH the modern voice synthesis stuff is starting to make those sound lame nowadays. This is all happening in the MOBILE ecosphere now, NOT the desktop arena.....

There are tools to make own voices for Java FreeTTS (it is not easy).

Is there desktop app with support for Slavic languages i don't know.

But for other languages there are online services:
https://ttsfree.com/

Maybe this:

espeak is a speech synthesizer that does not use much resources.
It is not a java app. It is cross platform.
it supports about 150 languages, including Klingon.

The sound quality is not natural sounding.

@mikeslr :-

If you have a browse through my Google Drive, Mike, under the "Java_Runtime" directory there's another directory for "Java Apps". In there, you'll find a tiny SFS I made around 4 years ago....for JDiskReport.

It's been around for a long time, this thing.....yet still works just as well under current Java as it did several years ago. And still just as useful; like all Java apps, it's "no-arch".

T'other Mike. ;)

Freeplane was added earlier. Strange is that when using search this topic option only your post is listed, but all earlier 'freeplane' are matched.
Edit: I've checked this, added 'freeplane' tag on first line in my earlier post and now it is visible on search list.

A few years ago, I maintained a repo at github (it is still there: https://github.com/bkauler/oe-qky-src)

As I found using github from the commandline to be confusing, I used a GUI named SmartGit, a Java app, which is free for personal use:

https://www.syntevo.com/smartgit/

It requires a JRE, but I downloaded it again yesterday and found that it now has the jre builtin. Obviously they have done that for the convenience of users, no longer have to install a jre separately.

It got me wondering, how complete is the jre in SmartGit, could it be used to run other java apps? It is jre version 11.

Anyway, SmartGit is great. If you need to access (push, pull, etc.) a git repository, it makes life much easier.

@BarryK :-

Java 11 is pretty up-to-date. I think most of us in the kennels are still using variations on Java 8, or at least this works well with a lot of existing stuff.

From Java 9 onwards, Oracle had a big shake-up, and made one hell of a lot of modifications (basically created a new framework). Result being that apps written under older Java versions no longer function under "new" JAVA.

Oracle have also changed the way you obtain it. From what I can see of it, you now have to create an Oracle account, state how you're going to use it, and sign your life away just to get a copy of the runtime. Developers have to jump through several more hoops now.

Previously, all you did was to go to the Downloads page, and download the version you wanted. It's still free, but there's a lot more pre-conditions to that use now.

Mike. :|

Let's continue the theme of games.
Mindustry. A sandbox tower defense game written in Java. Defend your base from waves of powerful enemies.
This is possibly the best Java game of its kind. There is an editor. Mods can be made and downloaded. Cross-platform multiplayer. At the start, the game can determine the language itself, based on the system language, although it can be done manually. Based on the LibGDX engine (there are also Space Haven and Pathway games+etc, but they are proprietary).
