QDirStat appimage - similar to GDMap Graphical Disk Map

Post by peppyy »

Years ago on win95 I had an app that did this, it was called something like pillow view. Did some searching and found QDirStat. Pretty self explanatory and runs perfectly in Fossa64.
It is nice to glance at the directories and see what is using so much space.
Thought this might come in handy for some folks with limited space.

@peppyy :-

Do we have a link for this, mate? All I can find is sites with source code that expect you to compile it & build it yourself.....

I DID try downloading from that first link, on multiple occasions.....but every time, I kept getting "Download interrupted/corrupted". Huh..?????

Much as I like AppImages, Erik, I can't help thinking this particular one is somewhat OTT.....especially given that Puppy has for a long time used GdMap. Does the same thing, in a fraction of the footprint; after all, 90% of any Electron-based AppImage IS the Electron "framework" itself. The actual app will take up a relatively small amount of space in comparison.....

I know that with the huge amount of RAM I have, running multiple browsers, portable apps, AppImages, etc, all at the same time, makes no difference to me. It's not, however, in keeping with Puppy's traditional "raison d'etre", that of keeping elderly, low-power hardware still useful. But then, I guess this is why we tend to have so many different versions of essentially the same thing available for community members.....in many different formats.

@mikewalsh I believe I found it at https://apprepo.de/appimage/qdirstat It appears to be the same size and version I am using.

Searching for alternatives these two 64b AppImages work for me:

https://apprepo.de/appimage/baobab

This one I need to run with --no-sandbox:

https://github.com/Jelmerro/crossdirsta ... 0.AppImage

There's also http://duc.zevv.nl/

But have to agree with mikewalsh that GdMap does the same job, and is
lighter.

Looked for GdMap and found several from source and a couple older pets. The newest I could find was 0.8.1 from slaco6415. gdmap-0.8.1-x86_64_s700.pet from 2016. 29.8k
This appears to be the last release from 15-Jun-2008
It gives a message in terminal
Message: 08:27:47.057: No such file or directory (in dark blue text). I am guessing this is a time stamp? The window opens however it shows no graphic.

I tried several different settings, and nothing changed.

If it were compiled from source do you think it would work, or is it just too old?

Hi peppyy,

gdmap-0.8.1-x86_64_common64.pet from https://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/p ... mmon64.pet seems to function under Bioncipup64. I unpacked it --intending to run ldd-- but discovering that there was a stand-alone binary in /usr/bin, just left-clicked it. Package is 29.8 K.
I've moved the screenshot to here, viewtopic.php?f=106&t=3748 where those interested in a 32-bit version can find a link.

peppyy,

If you open a terminal emulator, and enter:

Code: Select all

gdmap

what is the result?

@peppyy

In Windows I have always used the program idisk that shows what is using drive space and also lets you manipulate/delete if desired. QDirStat does the same and provides a lot more detail than GDMap. Thanks for sharing your find.

It comes up and sits there. Wait! I got it going from changing the settings for the treemaps to standard and then back to squarified.
Now to get the create new color to stick ;)
It appears you need to add the color, click add and okay. Then go back and add the extension /s and click okay again.
