Bionicpup 19-03 32bit hangs on xwin

Post by solarpuppy »

puppy 19-03 32bit hangs on xwin ...
console comes up ok, console commands ok

used xorgwizard to configure xorg.conf to vesa, 800x600, 16 bit
lowest rez, tried other resolutions, no go, screen goes black,
next is reset button

motherboard is Intel PIII, 512 MB Ram, Intel 82801 bridge
works ok with win xp, other linux 32bit distros

kernel seems to be running, pretty sure, as the reset button
briefly resets the screen,
before it terminates the kernel with a 'reboot' msg

the problem seems to be xwin/xorg being able to find the Intel
display correctly

@solarpuppy - Could be a modesetting issue with bionicpup32-19.03.
Try appending the following to your grub.cfg/syslinux.cfg kernel/linux line:
i915.modeset=0
Save updated .cfg file then reboot.

How do you know for sure it is using some type of Intel graphics hardware?
Can you tell us for sure what the graphics hardware is?

You are installing it to what exact drive?
Exactly how are you doing the install?
Specific details!!

I am really surprised, it will not get to working desktop, using Vesa driver.
All graphics hardware supports Vesa driver.

puppy 19-03 32bit hangs on xwin ...
console comes up ok, console commands ok

How exactly are you booting to a console?

Answer the questions and we can give you some help?

You are installing it to what exact drive?
USB, SD card, CD/DVD, Internal hard drive?

Exactly how are you doing the install?
Specific details!!

How exactly are you booting to a console?

You can edit any boot loader menu entry before you use it.
But I need to know what boot loader is being used and what menu entry you are trying to boot with?

easy there fella ....

You are installing it to what exact drive?
funny 'english,' puppy boots from a cd

USB, SD card, CD/DVD, Internal hard drive?
see above

Exactly how are you doing the install?
Specific details!!
easy there, puppy ...
three times already, boot from cd distro bionic pup 19.03 32bit

How exactly are you booting to a console?
newbie question, option on the startup menu, three times already

You can edit any boot loader menu entry before you use it.
easy said, what are your suggestions ?

But I need to know what boot loader is being used and what menu entry you are trying to boot with?
calm down, repeating questions over and over ...
read 1st post, cd bionic puppy 19.03 distro, 'no graphical interface' on the menu,
all this is on my 1st post, you have no idea what this is, do you ?

no place in that first post do you specifically say this!
First post:

puppy 19-03 32bit hangs on xwin ...
console comes up ok, console commands ok

Now that you finally answered my questions.

When you boot with the Bionicpup 32 8.0 live CD.
Choose the first menu entry to boot with.
This should be the normal boot.

To make edits to the entry before you actually use it.
When you see the boot menu.
Move the highlight off of the entry that is highlighted.
That will stop auto boot.
Highlight the first menu entry.
Bottom of screen should provide edit info.
Usually press E key. (it could say to press tab key)
This should activate edit ability and display the lines of the boot menu entry.
Try adding:

Try adding the following to the end of kernel or linux line:
i915.modeset=0

Press enter to save change.
At bottom of edit screen, it will tell you what key to press, to make it boot, using this change.

Any help??

If this helps.
Because it is a CD and read only.
You will have to do this every time you boot.
Can not make change to the read only menu config file on the CD.

If you make a Live USB, files are read/write. and can be edited.

you have no idea what this is, do you ?

My main idea is Bionicpup32 8.0 does not support your hardware.
Not all Puppy versions support every possible computer and their hardware.
That is why there are several versions of Puppy.
All we can do, is give you info, on what has worked, on some computers, having problems, booting to working desktop.

Being on a CD.
There is a chance the iso burn did not go completely 100% good.
It happens.
Do not burn any faster than 8.
also, CD drives get dirty inside, old ones start failing, not reading 100% correctly.
You say other Linux OS's boot OK. If on CD, then I guess your CD drive is working OK.

You would be surprised how many times people post about booting from a CD install.
To find out they did not install it correctly to the CD.
Do you see all of the files in the Bionicpup iso on the CD?
Should see this:

Ok.
That tells us there is nothing wrong with what is on the CD.

Did you try the boot menu entry edit, when you try to boot?
Adding the i915.modeset=0 (that 0 is the number 0) to the end of the kernel or linux line of the entry?

To be honest. The i915 driver, for Intel Hardware, that is in Bionicpup32 8.0, may not even support the hardware in this computer.
A lot has changed with that driver.
That i915.modeset=0 is one way to maybe get it to work.

Bionicpup32 8.0 is not going to support every possible computer. No Puppy version does.
Around Tahrpup development.
Supporting PIII processor computers started getting dropped.

Maybe Precise Light will work better.
