slacko64-8.0-pre-pre-pre-alpha! (and 4 bits?)

Post by 01micko »

Whoa!

pre-pre-pre-alpha? (and 4 bits?)

How did we go from "and a bit" to "4 bits"?

See this post

All future alpha beta rc will be released like this (after I test builds locally)

See https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/woof-CE/releases

Yes, that's right.

Older info below (but still relevant)

This has binary compatibility with Slackware64 -current (denoted 15 alpha) and since that isn't stable, and we use Salix for dep checking, which usually only does this for stable, then we can safely say that this release is entirely unstable.

The next iteration is here! (by a bit!)

let's cut to the chase..

Download:
http://01micko.com/woof-output-slacko64 ... -8.0.1.iso 462 MB (hugish? yes - (was 444 - but we've zstd compression now, a little bigger for faster decomp)
http://01micko.com/woof-output-slacko64 ... so.md5.txt md5
http://01micko.com/woof-output-slacko64 ... sha256.txt sha256
http://01micko.com/woof-output-slacko64 ... _8.0.1.sfs 230 MB for devx - including UPDATED qemu-5.2
http://01micko.com/woof-output-slacko64 ... fs.md5.txt md5 for devx

ORIGINAL STUFF BELOW - SEE NEXT POST FOR CHANGES

Features and bugs

  • mostly gtk+3, including gtkdialog (you're in for some fun @zigbert  ), geany, leafpad, sylpheed, lxtask, tray applets and more

  • updated gtkdialog gui's accordingly, mostly in woof. Pets dependant on gtkdialog may or may not work, YMMV

  • pulseaudio - yes that is one big featured bug! But folk want bluetooth - right? We'll get there soonish.

  • at woof level puppy staples are compiled in woof, chroot'd into the woof target main rootfs, many thanks to @dimkr for pioneering this gargantuan effort.

what works?

  • samba, sharing and connecting (amazingly), needs upgrading

  • ffmpeg - which is as ancient as Noah - amazingly works

  • firefox

  • X (YMMV) - you might not get X, if so, just power off an move on unless you are a masochist

  • wireless - again YMMV

what's broken?

  • abiword (needs upgrade)

  • gnumeric (ditto)

  • probably more than what works

what do you want from me?
Useful reports. Run apps from CLI and report errors. See what happens in the logs. Try `dmesg` on CLI. Fix bugs if you can.
Report hardware that works/fails ... be specific if you can. Useful tools are things like PupSysinfo, Htop, Hardinfo (gui), lsusb, lspci, dmidecode, ifconfig (etc .. cli).

I want this release to be far more timely than Slacko-7. (likely to be slacko-9.x)

It's nice that you provide slacko64 8.0 alpha, can you please provide 32-bit version of slacko 8.0? Is gtkdialog included was ported on gtk3?

+ gtkdialog based applications might be broken because of the GTK 3 upgrade of gtkdialog, which drops some widgets (list, table, combobox). As far as I see, all known incompatibilities are fixed.
+ Some gtkdialog based applications now look different - as far as I see applications that use the hbox widget are now horizontally maximized, or just bigger. If some dialog is working but way too big, this is a bug.
+ There are two Puppy GTK 3 themes (Flat-grey-rounded and Polished-Blue) and there may be cases where GTK 3 applications render funny, or cases where GTK 3 applications are inconsistent with GTK 2 applications (for example, different text color on button hover, between Geany and ROX-Filer, which still use GTK 3 and GTK 2, respectively). This kind of issues should be handled at https://github.com/dimkr/gtk3_flat_grey_rounded and https://github.com/dimkr/gtk3_polished_blue.

EDIT: Sylpheed is still stuck on GTK 2, it's a good place to look for GTK 2/GTK 3 theme inconsistencies.

Tried to download just clicking link, download fails at about 35MB, also on 2 subsequent restarts. Switched to wget in terminal with -t=0 , connection lost at same point , so will have lots of restarts.

Edit: Download finished (13 tries), MD5 Checksum checked OK.

Up and running on a HP Elitebook 8530w (frugal install). Wifi and sound working. Some of the setup dialogue boxes are wide as expected.
Pup-Advert-Blocker froze while updating, so shut it down via htop. Not found anything major so far.

Manual frugal install to Dell Latitude 3350 Core i5-5200U 8GB RAM to internal SSD. First boot went fine , initial setup including wifi connection using intel 7265 wifi. Shutdown and created save folder, rebooted, working fine so far. All input, including touchscreen working fine.

So the basics all working fine. Posting from firefox now. Will test other applications now.

I'll get this close first then porting to 32 bit will be much easier. Developing in parallel is too time consuming, I do have somewhat of a life.. which reminds me of Miriam's signature on the old forum..

A life? Where can I download one of those?

So far lots of things working with basic testing:
pdict, galculator, geany, leafpad, pmount, mtpaint, gcolor2, Take-a-shot (tas), firefox working with sound.

The following are errors encountered.

Ptheme ran OK, theme was changed, but produced error output.

Code: Select all

# ptheme
cp: cannot stat '/root/.jwmrc-tray': No such file or directory
/usr/local/jwm_config/theme_switcher: line 63: /root/.jwmrc-tray: No such file or directory

The trays exist as .jwmrc-tray1 and .jwmrc-tray2.

The GUI's to change wallpaper are greyed out. Wallpaper did change when changing themes.

Lxterminal wouldn't run:

Code: Select all

# lxterminal
lxterminal: error while loading shared libraries: libvte.so.9: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Unable to play locally stored mp3's tried with pmusic and gnome-mplayer:

Code: Select all

#pmusic

free(): double free detected in tcache 2
...9 more lines of above...
#
true
true
aplay: main:830: audio open error: No such file or directory

Pmusic also wouldn't play radio stations, same messages as above

Gnome-mplayer ran but wouldn't play mp3's giving the following error:

Code: Select all

# gnome-mplayer

(gnome-mplayer:779): GLib-CRITICAL **: 16:16:50:989: Source ID 541 was not found when attempting to remove it

Osmo didn't run:

Code: Select all

# osmo
osmo: error while loading shared libraries: libical.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

The Puppy historical record reflects that @peebee has been helping with providing some 32bit distros for our use. At my last count I see 32bit Slacks (as well as others) from him that I have tested.

We must remember that NO PCs manufactured by companies have produced a 32bit PC since 2006 (15 years ago). There was a very brief period, to empty the factories of 32bit processors, in Netbooks in 2008 that died within a year until distribution was eliminated. Puppy development is a very limited resource these days.

Many-most of the community now run 64bit PCs (even if they choose to put 32bit distros on them). ARMs are now 64bit processors. Phones are now coming with 64bit processors. Distros have migrated, browsers have migrated, etc. A recent report (and I cannot find it now) shows that less than 6% of the consumer world uses any form of 32bit processors.

This info is NOT an attempt to set any pathways; MERELY this is a fact that we users are endeavored.

BTW: I have downloadedthe V8 engine, burned to a DVD and booted sucessfully!

Thanks @01micko and the WoofCE development crew to start this migration consistent with Slackware development. I am certain that this packaging and the upcoming FATDOG packaging will insure we users cruise "smoothly" forward over the bumpy road forward.

:thumbup2:

EDIT: No offense to anyone and most certainly NOT to @rizalmart. The whole development team is a precious resource!

Just to clarify, I'm assuming @mistfire's query is from a development perspective. Mistfire has developed many excellent puppy derivatives including the current quickpup which is 32-bit based on LXPupSC and also the excellent puppy hybrid tazpuppy. Mistfire is involved in Woof CE development as username rizalmart. A 32 bit derivative of this slacko8.0 produced by mistfire would be a very worthwhile addition. Just my humble opinion.

I see I have a job with migrating pMusic to gtk3... But I'll await the situation until the global gtk3-handling is settled. A brief look at Slacko-8, tells there are 'a couple' of issues with gtkdialog/gtk3 ;)

- Gtk3 pushes the default window width. This may be solved by removing resizable="false" in gtkdialog and setting a default_width="x". This issue occurs for many guis, and I think this solution alone would help a lot. I have only given an example in Woof-CE, so we can discuss this. There might be a better solution...

- Hseparator takes too much space (as seen in xorgwizard). This can be solved by giving some more info to the widget.

Code: Select all

<hseparator height-request="4" space-expand="true" space-fill="true">

- Drag'n'drop item inside <tree> (as in jwm_config - tray) fails if dropping item onto another one. The result is that the moving item is deleted. Mochimoppel made a clever workaround for this, but this does not work anymore for gtk3.

- Tweaking gui by unique gtk2 theme (as seen in jwm_config - tray) will of course fail. I have no experience with gtk3, so hopefully someone will offer an example...

- <statusbar> does not show handgrip (as seen in pTheme - bottom right)

- <buttons> don't accept the option relief="2" to hide the decoration (as seen in pTheme - buttons for global themes)

- Menus are too narrow to show whole menu-string (as seen in pfind - File menu). This only occurs at first time clicking the menu. Second time everything looks normal.

Yes there is some work to do on the source side and the application side. Don't get too carried away just yet, as things may (or may not) change in the source.

However, theming will stay constant. I have a very, very brief example committed to woof here.

Icons is another thing - GTK_STOCK is completely gone in gtk3.. what were they thinking!

Anyway these are the cards we are dealt (so to speak) and we have to start somewhere. It sure is possible in the transition phase to accommodate gtk2 and use a different name for the executables. We'll see.

Baby steps.

Overall:
- keycodes for direction keys still wrong (needs X restart to fix)
- suspends but does not wake up (HD powers up but screen remains blank) . May work on laptops.
- Upon boot 931MB personal storage, of which only 575MB free (was >900MB in Slacko7_64)

GTK
- double_arrow mouse cursors missing (should show when resizing panes, e.g. in Geany when moving dotted handle between document and message window)
- icons for GTK menuitems do not display (Geany, Notepad, MMview etc.). (See screenshot)

Gtkdialog:
- menu may open with insufficient width (See screenshot)
- Colorbutton widget gives access to new GtkColorChooserDialog. This dialog replaces the now deprecated picker with the color wheel (GtkColorSelectionDialog) of GTK2. No pipette anymore to pick colors. Almost all options hidden, who designs such rubbish? (See screenshot)
- Text in text widgets fails to wrap, causing extreme horizontal width of vbox or hbox widgets. setting wrap modes has no effect. Sometimes setting width_request for text widget's containers help to control text width but most of the time text widens all enclosing containers (incl. window) up until screen border.
- window property "allow-shrink" not supported anymore

Tested on desktop machine with AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, 2GB RAM

And I would suggest to @01micko that MMview finds it way into Slacko - a powertool! The easiest would be if MochiMoppel joined us at github. He has both code and skills Woof-CE could benefit of... but we all have to follow our belief...

After saving and rebooting, it pauses for about 60 seconds when it gets to 'Booting kernel...".
This didn't happen on first boot. Not a show stopper or anything, just a little odd.

The first boot using a save, usually does pause to integrate the save, into the filesystem.
Usually, it gives a message about doing this and boot will be quicker in future.

Are you still seeing this pause, after repeated boot ups?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected :o

BUG: In terminal use or on desktop, when I hit the up-arrow key to recall last command, it is launching Take-A-Shot on my pristine boots. There were reports in Slacko64 V7 on similar issue with arrow keys. I am using a FirstRUN as follows:

  • timezone from i-net

  • keyboard numlock

  • timezone -5

  • hostname -> Slacko-V8

Other DVD boot tests
Booted the V8 ISO file directly from its file saved in /boot-isos on my HDD via SG2D. No Boot issues on any of the Slacko64 boot menu selectors.

My ISOs found.jpg (66.71 KiB) Viewed 1631 times

Slacko64-V8 is off-screen; I scrolled to it and booted for my testings.

Session saving works no matter which boot methods tested; namely via DVD or via ISO file. In my case, I save all session in /Sessions on system's HDD requiring a boot edit step of, for example, "psave=sda5:/Sessions/".

Booting directly from the Slacko64 ISO files allow me to quickly compare tests.

@01micko shows in earlier screenshots booting of this Slacko64 within QEMU for those, too, who would like fast, quick ways to test this and other Slacko64s (other PUPs too). I cannot test QEMU on this PC as it lacks the hardware (UEFI_BIOS) entry for acceleration.
Test to see if your PC has it & is turned on to be available

Code: Select all

# egrep --color=always -i 'vmx|svm' /proc/cpuinfo

BUG: In terminal use or on desktop, when I hit the up-arrow key to recall last command, it is launching Take-A-Shot on my pristine boots. There were reports in Slacko64 V7 on similar issue with arrow keys. I am using a FirstRUN as follows:

  • timezone from i-net

  • keyboard numlock

  • timezone -5

  • hostname -> Slacko-V8

This happened to me a short while ago, can't remember which puppy it was at the moment, maybe it was slacko 7.0. It was TAS was mapped to key code 111 (0x6f) which is the Up key, the PrtScr on my laptop is 107 (0x6b). I changed the TAS to use keycode 107 instead of 111. This didn't happen on my laptop in this current version, it worked, correctly, as TAS is mapped to the PrtScr key

Edit: I've been hunting for which puppy and the actual change I made. I can't find it. I wish I was more organized and kept notes better (or at all). :?

@bigpup
Yes I get this with subsequent reboots. No messages, just the delay.

Post by Clarity »

Could someone who has the DEVX installed be kind enough to build this QEMU as a PET: V5.2 download is here.

A description of the 5.2 contribution is here for reading.

Thanks in advance, if you can.

The taiwanese 'isu.edu.tw' repo seems down. I''ll be deleting that one from woof. Thanks @Clarity for reminding me.

Similar results to @Clarity when trying to download bluez & blueman. This also mentions a german ftp site as well as the taiwanese mirror.

Chinese language pets for slacko64-8.0-pre-pre-pre-alpha!

Post by icake »

I have created 4 half-Chinese language pets and 2 Chinese language pets each for slacko64-8.0-pre-pre-per-alpha:

name of iso files: slacko64-8.0.iso

names of half-Chinese language pets:
fcitx Chinese input platform: fcitx64_4.2.9-en-zh-bionic-21.1.1.pet (18 mb)

ibus Chinese input platform: ibus64_1.5.19-en-zh-bionic-21.1.1.pet (32 mb)

scim Chinese input platform: scim64_1.4.9-en-zh-bionic-21.1.1.pet (13 mb)

yong Chinese input platform: yong3264_20201122-en-zh-bionic-21.1.1.pet (9 mb)

names of Chinese language pets:
Simplified Chinese: slacko64-8.0.0-zhcn-21.1.1.pet (2 mb)
Traditional Chinese: slacko64-8.0.0-zhhk-21.1.1.pet (2 mb)

To use:
(a) any 1 of the 4 half-Chinese language pets will enable you to display and input Chinese in slacko64-8.0-pre-pre-per-alpha

(b) the Chinese language pets will give you Simplified Chinese (use zhcn pet) or Traditional Chinese (use zhhk pet) menus, icon labels, tooltips for slacko64-8.0-pre-pre-per-alpha. For the Chinese pets to work normally, you must install a suitable half-Chinese pet prior to install the Chinese pet.

For more information and download links of these pets, please see the links below:
