G.I.M.P-portable...

Post by mikewalsh »

Afternoon, gang.

I've 'portabilized' the latest of aferrero2707's GIMP AppImages. By this, I mean it's now in a self-contained directory, along with scripting that keeps the config stuff within that directory, sym-linking it out to where it's expected at run-time.....along with further scripts that allow the creation of a Menu entry if required.

Sym-links are removed when you close the app. A "READ-ME" file explains how to add/remove & manage Menu entries if you want to re-locate them.

(Generally, I'm a stalwart champion of AppImages. The only thing that bugs me about them is their habit of leaving additional config files all over the place wherever they're used.....ready for the next time, along with the need to set them up fresh each time they're used in a new location. I prefer to only have to do this once, then use my personal settings in each new location instead...so the above method gets round this slightly 'untidy' aspect of my favourite run-anywhere format.)

If anyone's interested, it can be found here:-

Have fun.

Thanks, Mike. It seems to work perfectly in bionicpup64 8.0 and fossapup64 6.06 right out of the box.

...starting from menu- NEVERMIND

Post by geo_c »

Seems to bootup fine from the LAUNCH icon, but when starting from the menu entry I get this message:

Opening '/root/%U' failed: Error opening file /root/%U: No such file or directory

It could have something to do with the fact that I unloaded the SFS Gimp 2.10.18 which also had a menu entry. Now I have two entries that both fire up 2.10.25

EDIT: Nevermind! I just the read the readme. Thanks

Right, gang.

Now then; following the thread here:-

viewtopic.php?t=14048

.....about the long-awaited release of GIMP 3.0.0, I'm pleased to be able to offer a "portable" build of this. DO be aware of two things:-

  • So far as Puppies are concerned, this basically works just in Bookwormpup64 (currently @ 10.0.10). This HAS been tested, so I know this works. The assumption is that it should work in any NEW-ish forum distro, where the glibc (and other components) are sufficiently new enough for it

  • It also needs to be a post-usrmerge forum distro. GIMP 3.0.0 is looking in /usr/lib for glibc components (initially, libdl.so.2); anything including Fossapup64 backwards has the glibc components in /lib, so GIMP wouldn't find them. A newer build of Python3 is also required, apparently

All of which creates a "double-whammy", of course. Not only will most required components be too old, the majority of them will also be in the "wrong" location. This particular one is a very good argument for always using the newest possible distros.....because these are what GIMP 3.0 has been written & compiled to work with, and is the environment it expects to find.

===================================

That said, for anyone who'd like this in 'portable' format, you can find it here:-

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

.....at my Google Drive. BE WARNED:- this is a BIG package (almost half a gig in size).

As always:-

  • Download

  • Unzip

  • Move the portable directory anywhere you like; in this case, outside the 'save' is most definitely recommended!

  • Click to enter

  • Click 'LAUNCH' to fire it up...

The usual MenuAdd/Remove scripts are present & correct as normal. Use these if you want a Menu entry to launch your 'portable' from wherever it's located.

Hope y'all find this useful. Enjoy!

Mike. ;)
