Firefox doesn't upgrade

Post by CSH »

I have a (fairly old) version of fossapup64. It keeps warning me that there will be problems shortly if I don't upgrade. Looking at Puppy Package manager, it says I have installed firefox-77.0.1-x86_64 from puppy-fossa64-official and firefox_134.0+build1 from ubuntu-focal-main. Neither seems to match the number that Firefox tells me that it is running which is 84.0 (64-bit).
How do I get a more modern version of Firefox that will not fall over?

Best thing is switch the way Firefox is installed. Using the package manager in Fossapup64 will not bring in the latest Firefox.
Proboably remove the current firefox with the package manager but you might want to retain the profile in /root/.mozilla to carry over to the knew Firefox
Try this: go to the firefox site and download Firefox for Linux.
extract the file and place the firefox directory in /opt. So /opt/firefox.
change the .desktop file in /usr/share/apllications/firefox.desktop to Exec=/opt/firefox/firefox

This will supply the latest. And to update it go into the Firefox menu to Help->About and this will look for any updates and install them keeping FF up to date.

Let us know if you need more guidance :thumbup2:

I'd recommend switching to firefox64-portable, viewtopic.php?p=37559#p37559. Download the tar.xz and extract it. Within the extracted older will be another just named 'firefox64" or "firefox64-portable". [The "-portable" ending can be removed if present. I may have done so with mine]. MOVE that folder wherever you want. Although constructed so that it will literally be run from anywhere --even a removable USB-Key-- and frequently located on /mnt/home, it can be deployed to /opt.

The currently downloaded 'tar.xz' version can be updated via its internal mechanism: Menu>Help>About firefox. The Portable is self-contained. Web-cache will be stored in it rather than /root. If on /mnt/home web-cache does not acculate in RAM. Profiles --bookmarks, settings, addons-- are also stored in its folder. Left-clicking the "Launch" script within its folder can be used to start the application. Left-Clicking the "Menu Add" script within the folder will create a Menu-Entry without regard to where the portable has been deployed. In most cases it will be recognized as an application distinct from an installed firefox or sfs-loaded firefox.sfs.

My experience has `been that reasonably current versions of firefox --even installed versions-- will NOT accept old profiles. You can try by copying /root/.mozilla into the into the portable folder and renaming .mozilla to 'profile' without the quotes. [Note the absence of "./dot". If that doesn't work, start your old firefox, click "Addons & Themes" and take screenshots of the ones you have and want to install. Use that firefox's Bookmark manager to export your Bookmarks for importation into your new firefox.

When satisfied, you can SFS-(un)load the firefox.sfs or Uninstall/Remove Builtins the old firefox; then delete any /root/.mozilla folder still present.

In Firefox settings ->General ->Firefox updates

I have selected to check for updates but let me choose to install

In Firefox menu bar, have it showing.

Click on help ->About Firefox

It should give you a Firefox is updated or click here to update.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Thanks all. The problem I saw was that there was nothing in the "About" letting me upgrade. I downloaded the latest and running that does have the upgrade option, so that should be OK in the future.
