Dunfell Firefox how to update?

Post by CF-DKS »

I've been using EasyDunfell 3.4.3 as my "daily driver" since 2022 and I love it. The Firefox release that was included had updates blocked and I have not found a way around this except to download an additional Firefox latest version. Is there a way to change the default built in web browser to a more recent version of Firefox, given that the version I use becomes outdated after today? I can and have run the latest Scarthgap on this computer, but I like my good old reliable Dunfell that boots in 35 seconds and does everything I need on a daily basis! I have other computers to experiment with, I just want this one to work without surprises, which is what Dunfell gives me.

On a related note, the current Scarthgap has Chromium available in a container, but not Firefox.(I am running Firefox as the default browser not in container). Chromium doesn't work well for me (too many ads!!) so how do I make Firefox available in a container instead? There are sites I visit that I want in a container but I dislike using Chromium. This will also be an issue for me if I can't make the change in my Dunfell OS. I like keeping social media in a box.

For the first question, a thing to test:
In EasyDunfell, when firefox is closed, save /usr/lib/firefox ( by example with the command cp -R /usr/lib/firefox /usr/lib/firefox-save) then replace the directory /usr/lib/firefox by the directory /usr/lib/firefox from Scarthgap.

I'm not comfortable with command line, but I renamed the directory "oldfirefox" and substituted the one from Scarthgap. That appears to work for the default version, but not for the containerized version, it stays the same. I am experimenting on a different USB stick running Dunfell, and the change seems to stick through a reboot, so hopefully is good. I am oh so cautious messing around with my primary USB stick, so like to test things out before I make changes! Thanks Caramel.

Rename the directory was much smarter than copy.

For the container, I think you should copy /usr/lib/firefox in /mnt/wkg/container/www/.session/usr/lib

EDIT: clarification
The directory firefox in /usr/lib must be copied inside the directory /mnt/wkg/container/www/.session/usr/lib

I tried changing the container on my test USB and it appeared to work, but then when I rebooted things started to get strange and the containerized Firefox responded erratically, then froze, so I think I will pass on doing that change with my primary USB. Thanks for the assistance! I will do a bit more experimenting but my main problem appears to be solved.
