File encryption in LibreOffice doesn't work in F96-CE

Post by simfann »

Who can help here?

I often work under LibreOffice with encryption. I use 2 puppies: F96-CE and VoidPup64. Opening of encrypted LibreOffice files with the extension "ods" (spread sheets) is only possible with VoidPup64, but not with F96-CE. More details:
Operating systems: F96-CE_4 and VoidPup64-22.02-240717
LibreOffice version in both operating systems: LibreOffice-24.8.3_64_de_xz.sfs (loaded as the same "sfs" in both operating systems)

The problem exists in F96-CE_4 with "old" LibreOffice files and also with new files. I can define a password for a new file in LibreOffice, but once the file is closed, I can't open it any more. The alert says: The password is invalid. I took short passwords like "test" and also long ones. The alert was always the same.

Is there anything missing in F96-CE, to use passwords for LibreOffice files?

I ran into this problem a few months ago when libreoffice changed their encryption routine. It caused me no end of grief because suddenly without warning most of my important (and therefore encrypted) files were no longer accessible.

I spent a awful lot of time trying to work out how to get around this issue - and made myself some notes to avoid this problem in the future. The source of the problem (at least for me) seems to be:
(a) the user profile somehow becomes corrupted (don't know why)
(b) the 'Load/Save' default file option 1.3 extended

So - I now always keep a backup of a clean user profile, and whenever I update libreoffice I always change the default file format to 1.2 (instead of the recommended 1.3 extended)

I hope this might be of use to you.

Thank you for your help!
Your contribution, especially the attachment "LO UPGRADE NOTE.txt" has helped me a lot, but hasn't led to a complete solution. I found the following facts (When I write in the following of files, I always mean encrypted files with a password.):
1) The whole problem has really to do with the "odf" file format of LibreOffice and at least for me not with the user profile. I have chosen quite a new user profile with no effect!
2) The only way to save a new "ods" file with password and reopen the file with this password was by setting LibreOffice to "odf" file format "1.2 extended" according to "LO UPGRADE".NOTE.txt". There was no chance doing this with "odf" file format "1.3 with/without/extended".
3) Old files from a few months ago (created with LibreOffice version 24) can't be opened by any "odf" file format.
4) But older files from let's say a year or so ago (created with LibreOffice version 6 or 7) could be opened with "odf" file format "1.2 extended", not with 1.3.
5) I will repeat here once again, that this problem only occurs with F96-CE. I also use VoidPup64, where I haven't any problems with passwords, old or new files. The "odf" file format in LibreOffice in VoidPup64 is "1.3 extended"! Even the very old files I can open in VoidPup64!

My only conclusion is now: F96-CE can't deal with LibreOffice "odf" file format "1.3 extended". In other words: The operating system F96-CE seems to be the cause of the problem!
