Test Results - Booting-Woof-CE PUPs directly from its ISO download

Post by Clarity »

Results: Tests of booting a WoofCE PUP from its ISO file to its desktop

Note: Booting WoofCE PUPs from its ISO files eliminates issues of extractions and boot-menu changes which often can result in errors. The ISO file booting is trouble-free retaining all the properties expected in a Frugal use.

The Approach and Intent:

  • Merely download the ISO file to the launch USB and boot it to desktop to be operational. No intermediate step(s) required.

  • At boot for all tests, KLV's default boot Menu item taken without menu change.

Legend for 'N' (No) in table

  • (1) - Drops out to GRUB prompt

  • (2) - Stops at Console w/o Desktop

  • (3) - TRAP/Abend/Stops during boot

  • (4) - IMG Not Supported by Launcher

  • (5) - REQUIRES session-save parm (PSAVE=), manually added, to GRUB2 Menu stanza for boot for proper session-save management

  • (6) - Not tested

  • (7) - WoofCE PUPs: SAVESPEC will NOT be honored; if 'PSAVE' boot parm specified, boot will drop to GRUB prompt

.
QEMU stanza used in tests

Code: Select all

qemu-system-x86_64 -name "WoofCE PUP ISO from Ventoy USB" -enable-kvm -vga std -m 2G -smp 2 -device AC97 -net nic -net user -rtc base=localtime /dev/sdc

Where "/dev/sdc" is the Ventoy USB (also same path when the SG2D USB is in the PC slot)

Caveats

  • For Ventoy launching, the boot stanza MUST have a PSAVE= parm to direct persistence

  • For SG2D launching, no such is needed as the SAVESPEC file in the BOOTISOS folder, if exist, automatically directs persistence

.

Where to get the ISO launch tools mentioned in the table's header

  • QEMU - this is installed from your forum distro's Package Manager

  • Ventoy - this is gotten from its site (click here)

  • Super GRUB2 Disk (SG2D) - this is gotten from its site (click here)

More to the point, what I don't understand is how you got access to post in a "locked" forum?

Can't figure that one out.

@mikewalsh

Same way I did I guess.

Just logged in the normal way and posted.

Maybe the lock is broken, worth looking into wouldn't you agree.

There is no 'clarity' in the results posted.

If the result is not completed without an additional input then it should be 'N6' not Y6.

The Approach and Intent:

Merely download the ISO file to the launch USB and boot it to desktop to be operational. No intermediate step(s) required.

Do the PXE boot N6 results simply mean that you are not able to conduct the test??

Currently @fatdog is the ONLY forum distro capable of booting its ISO via a PXE server

The ISO's which have dates are not presented in a coherent format ie date.

Hello @Jasper

I try to cover your points without using specific references to your post.

N(6) - means I have not tested the PXE. When/if I do, that column will change to either N or Y

I use Ventoy PXE to test booting ISO files from over the LAN without any need to move/save an ISO at the site of my PC. They have a very simple structure for their PXE facility. @fatdog is the ONLY forum iso file that boots to desktop over PXE.

You correctly note that I have not tested PXE booting, recently. I should do that. And you also correctly note that I have posted a test not following a proper dated sequence (this was done in haste and should have been posted in sequence ... not as its shown. I will repair the table in my next WoofCE distro tests.

Thanks for your insight.

@Clarity

Thanks for the update it is appreciated and work undertaken :thumbup:

Is it worth adding to your initial post, links to the applications that you are using ie Ventoy and SG2D?

Some people may not be familiar with these. It would be useful to have all the information to hand in the thread instead of them having to search for them.

Just a thought!

@Clarity

Honestly, don't hate me :lol: ...... I just had another thought ..... maybe the latest/current releases could be 'highlighted'?

I noticed that BookwormPup64 10.0.8 appears slightly darker compared to the other text.

Looks good regardless :thumbup2:

Considering the low activity in woof-CE in areas that can affect ability to boot (like https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... itrd-progs) and aren't distro specific (all woof-CE builds use same boot loader for the ISO, etc') I don't think there's much value in testing the same things over and over. Nothing has changed, and if test results have changed, this is probably a mistake.

Gives Clarity a sense of purpose.

If the purpose is to get boot-related issues fixed, then issues persist not due to lack of awareness among developers but due to lack of developers.
