FreeCAD in Puppy-portable format, with self-contained config stuff...

Post by mikewalsh »

Afternoon, gang.

Following recent discussion in the other FreeCAD thread:-

viewtopic.php?p=136207

...I've realised that, although I've had this built as a portable for at least a coupla years, I've never in fact offered this one to the community. So I'm going to rectify that now.

Trying out the in-app updater last night, it successfully did its thing. After years in "beta", we are now - at LONG last! - at v1.0.0. I've also re-built it using the xdg-tweak trick MochiMoppel introduced me to a couple of years back, so no more "sym-linking gymnastics" as Mochi himself put it. And the final truly humungous 940 MB "beta" AppImages have been put on a strict diet......FreeCAD is now at a "relatively" svelte 670 MB (!!) :roll:

But it works so amazingly well, we can forgive the "stoutness" (I think).

===========================

Usual stuff applies:-

  • Download

  • Unzip

  • Move the portable directory anywhere you like. However, with summat as hefty as this, I would very definitely recommend this goes outside the 'save'......for obvious reasons!

  • Click to enter

  • Click 'LAUNCH' to fire it up

The usual scripts permit adding or removing a Menu entry from wherever you've located it. Please peruse the 'MenuReadMe' file if wishing to re-locate the portable directory.

Y'all can find it at my Google Drive, here:-

Enjoy!

Mike. ;)

Download always fails at the end. The size of the file is indicated as 645 MB, whereas you say it is 670 MB.
Something wrong?

Hi @mikewalsh ,@bigpup & @all

FC in the menu , nice ,
is an integrate update option a possibility?
or get the newest dev one ?
they do weekly dev + zsync , that would be great ? (Not that i would update it weekly )
+ you save on download , - do got to rewrite the 6??mb. ,i guess ,
could = some bugs , + fixes .

As portable as an appimage is !
FC is an engineer wearing a hard hat & a tuxedo with a soldier big backpack ,full of tools, image speaking .

I also tried the original appimage from freecad with the same result.
I only have a slow internet connection. I now tried at a friend with a highspeed connection and it went allright.
