Re: questions about downloading, installing programs and extracting zip files
@Will_Shok,
We should start off with getting the Brave browser to work. Steam is a bit tricky so some easier packages to install should be good place to start and get the feel of how it all works.
In F96-CE_4 I've been using the Brave portable that is downloadable and discussed here -> https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=6150.
Portables can be stored outside of the F96-CE_4 file system! For example /mnt/sda1/brave-portable
. Also different frugal installations of Puppy Linux and or KLV's can also use the same exact portable!
Take a look at the topic from the link and let us know how you are doing.

This is not very useful info.
This is what info we really need to give good help:

Re: questions about downloading, installing programs and extracting zip files
Here is information on Steam:
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=4320
The first post is trying to get you setup with a working Steam program.
But they are not really trying to make it work very well in Linux version.
They seem to be constantly tweaking it with a new version, but it still stays 32bit Linux.
The best I have ever been able to get it to do is allow me to download some of the Linux based games.
Get them installed in Puppy to run them.
Depends on the game what issues it may have.
The free ones, that are not so complicated and system demanding, seem to work OK.
The Games offered in the forum Additional Software ->Games are better to use in Puppy Linux.
The games topic will provide needed info on using it in Puppy Linux and most of the time, a good download link to get it from.

You may have, but we cant help unless you explain in more detail how you installed it and where and be more specific about which brave you installed>

I assume you are talking about this:
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=6150
Did you do exactly what it says in the first post about how to download and run it?
As always:-
Download
Unzip
Move the extracted 'portable' directory anywhere you like, though preferably outside the 'save'
Click on the directory, to enter it, and see the files in it.
Click on 'LAUNCH' to run it entirely as a portable application - the profile is, as usual, created inside the portable directory. For greater system integration, a Menu entry may be added using the supplied scripts, if one is required

Re: questions about downloading, installing programs and extracting zip files
First a follow-up on bigpup's mention of unzip. If you didn't know Puppy's provide a lot of Right-Click options. Rather than starting from an application on the Menu [e.g., Menu>Utility>UExtract or XArchive or pExtract] then file-browsing to the archive, you can file-browse to the archive, Right-Click it and select e.g. UExtract from the drop down menu.
The gist of the posts about steam is that under Linux it's a 32-bit application. F96-CE4 is a 64bit operating system. Puppys have problems running multi-architecture*. There's a work-around. But you may want to consider using a debiandog, https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=22 or a Kennel Linux, https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=192. Don't hesitate to ask for recommendations. If you do that, be sure to identify what other objectives you have.
To run a 32bit application under a 64-bit Puppy, you have to download, then load the 32-bit compatibility SFS. For F96-CE4, you'll find a link to 32bit-compatibilty-fossa64.sfs here, https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic. ... 882#p85882.
*Compatibility SFSes contain almost an entire operating system. They can't be installed in Puppys because some of their files and instructions would over-write or conflict with those of the Main (64bit) operating system. Puppys operate as a 'merged in RAM' system. See, https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=5818. However, Application SFSes --such as the 32-bit-compatibility-- are not merged but rather are only mounted and have lower priority than the contents of a SaveFile/Folder. Always remaining separate from the Main system in RAM, and having lower priority than the contents of the aforementioned SaveFile/Folder potential conflicts are avoided.
Once you download an SFS, locate it on /mnt/home --the partition on which Puppy's other system files are located. [It can be anywhere, including within a folder; except that it must be outside any folder which would be preserved in a SaveFile/Folder. Hence it must 'hang' from /mnt]. /mnt/home is the only partition mounted by default on boot-up; so the best location for SFS-applications you frequently want.
If you execute a Save while an SFS is loaded, it will always be loaded on boot-up until you unload it (e.g. Right-Click the SFS, then SFS-Load: it's a toggle) and execute a Save to preserve that change. Only the instruction for SFS-Loading an SFS are preserved in the SaveFile/Folder; not the SFS, itself.

Re: questions about downloading, installing programs and extracting zip files
From the link to the download location, provided in my previous post.
You downloaded the package file Brave-portable64.tar.xz
Yes?
In Rox file manager you navigate to it's location.
Yes?
You right clicked on it and selected pextract.
Yes?
In pextract main window selected to extract.
Yes?
Now you will have a Brave-portable64 directory displayed as a brave icon.
Yes?
Left click on this Brave-portable64 directory to open it showing contents.
Yes?
Left click on the LAUNCH file in the displayed contents of the brave directory.
Brave browser should open.
If no.
I really do not know what you are doing wrong.
works for me in F96-CE_4 i have installed and using it to post this.
Note:
It will nag about needing updated.
To do this for this portable install.
Open the Brave directory there are several exec files.
Right click on the UpdateBrave file and select to run in terminal.
When it completes.
LAUNCH will now run the updated version of Brave.
The menuAdd file when left clicked on will make a menu entry for Brave in menu ->Internet
.
