How to input Vietnamese to F96-CE?

Post by nfkhanh »

Hi everybody!
I'm a newbie. I've just install F96-CE_4 on my PC. I find out it's adorable. And I'm maybe faliing in love with it :-). Is there someone show me how to set up Vietnamese input for this distro. Please! Because I'm Vietnamese and I work on my own PS every day. Thank you so much.

How to set up Vietnamese input on F96-CE_4 Puppy Linux

Answer
To set up Vietnamese input on F96-CE_4 Puppy Linux, you'll need to follow these steps:

Install an input method framework like iBus or fcitx. These are not included by default in Puppy Linux, so you'll need to use the package manager to install them.

After installing the input method framework, you'll need to install a Vietnamese input method. The most common ones are:
iBus-unikey
fcitx-unikey

Once installed, you'll need to configure the input method:
For iBus: Run ibus-setup from the terminal
For fcitx: Run fcitx-configtool from the terminal

Add Vietnamese as an input language in the configuration tool.

Set up a keyboard shortcut to switch between input methods. Common shortcuts are:
Ctrl+Space
Super+Space (Super is usually the Windows key)

You may need to log out and log back in for the changes to take effect.

To type in Vietnamese, activate the Vietnamese input method using your chosen shortcut. You can then use either the TELEX or VNI input methods, depending on your preference and what you installed.

Keep in mind that Puppy Linux, especially lightweight versions like F96-CE_4, may not have all these packages readily available in their default repositories. You might need to add additional repositories or compile some components from source. If you encounter difficulties, you can try using a web-based Vietnamese keyboard as a temporary solution while you work on setting up the system-wide input method.

Hope this helps

Thank Chelsea08 for your guilding. I installed both iBus and iBus-unikey. But I cannot type Vietnamese.
1. ibus-daemon runs under the command in terminal. I try to add it to start-up in Puppy_Setting or Drag it from /usr/bin to /home/Startup, it still doesn't start up.
2. When ibus-daemon runs with the command, I still cannot type Vietnamese.
Is there some setup?
Please show me. Puppy looks like a good pie but it's so hard to bite it.

Very good comment.

I only did the search to try and start the ball rolling for you as a lead in.

It sometimes works, also for a more knowledgeable member to pick up on.

Sorry @nfkhanh I can not help you any further.

Good luck.

@nfkhanh First of all :welcome: to the forum!

I will today install iBus and iBus-unikey on F96-CE_4 to find out what it takes to get working.

My son's partner is Vietnamese and even though she was born in Germany she speaks her parent's language so if I get stuck with my machine only speaking Vietnamese I'll be able to get some help switching back!!

I will start with this information -> https://askubuntu.com/questions/428673/ ... put-method

I've tried so many times to install and set up Vietnamese input for Puppy, but I/ve not got success at all. There are some packages such as ibus-unikey, scim-unikey, fcitx-unikey and xvnkb. They run in Arch, Ubuntu, Debian, but they don't run in Puppies. I've tried on Slacko, Fossa... They can dock in tray, but they're not be switched by hard short key. When I switch by click, Vietnamese typing is still be ran.
Maybe there is a difference between X11/XFCE4 and Wayland/GNOME to Icewm/JWM on Puppies.
So what is the solution? This is thank to the experts on Puppies.
Puppies is great. It is light in weight but wonderful in usage.
It seems like the girls from the countyside. Simple but deeply in soul.

I wonder if you added settings to use ibus in /root/.xinitrc.

Code: Select all

export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
ibus-daemon -drx

If you haven't, put these lines just before the line beginning with CURRENTWM=...

I hope it wiill help.

Edit:
One thing I forgot to mention.

Execute the following commands to update the immodules cache:
# gtk-query-immodules-2.0 --update-cache
# gtk-query-immodules-3.0 --update-cache

And the last thing to do.
Restart X.

To set up Vietnamese input, check the keyboard settings and look for “Input Method.” You might need to install IBus or fcitx for support. Add Vietnamese from there.

Finally, I can type Vietnamese on F96-CE now. Thanks to the advices from Chelsea80, rockedge, thinkpadfreak and Doggy.
1. I installed ibus_1.5.22, ibus-unikey_0.6.1, ibus-gtk_1.5.22, ibus-gtk3_1.5.22 with some their dependencies. <Chelsea80, rockedge>
2. I placed the codes at the end and before "###XXXEND###" of .xinitrc <thinkpadfreak>
export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
ibus-daemon -drx
3.I executed the commands:
# gtk-query-immodules-2.0 --update-cache
# gtk-query-immodules-3.0 --update-cache
4. Restarted X.
5. I added vi_keyboard <Doggy>
6. After restarting X again, I configured Vietnamese input method by command: # ibus-setup.
7. Once more restart X, I can type Vietnamese. It runs well on Abiword, Firefox.
There are 2 issues:
1. When I type a Vietnamese word with coma, it does not show immediately, it appears after I type the coma (ex. á à ả ã ạ) or [space].
2. ibus-unikey doesn't run with autostart. I have to place it in tray by adding a code into .jwmrc-tray:
<TrayButton popup="Unikey" icon="/usr/share/ibus-unikey/icons/ibus-unikey.png" border="false">exec:ibus-daemon</TrayButton>
The Unikey_icon is in the tray now. When I want to type Vietnamese, I active it by hand. I can switch between Eng or Vie by [Alt_left + Space]
I hope the Puppies will be loved by people who are Vietnamese and who will intend to learn Vietnamese language.
