"KL Universal Installer"

Post by josejp2424 »

I am making a persistent mode installer for KL. But I wonder, does KL already come with or have any installer that allows the user to install it in a user-friendly way on a system or USB

And I apologize if this conversation doesn't belong here. Please feel free to relocate it, admin.

Closest thing that I am aware of is the effort by the KL developers to provide a lead-in manner for booting ISO files. The developers leadership, as shown in the KL's boot Menu, is the following

  1. System is booted either via ISO file launches or via traditional movement of ISO file contents somewhere on some storage attached to the PC or DVD (It "REALLLY" doesn't matter which)

  2. The booted system will save user's session work on a drive label 'Persistence' in folder 'Sessions'.

Thus, its a very simple system.

Given this single layout arrangement, boot and session management, all past and future KLs work, OOTB. Further, the way the KLs are designed, KL's do NOT step on each other in the Sessions folder; allowing many different KLs to exist harmoniously in the sessions folder where each booted KL finds the user's prior, SAVED, session(s) for the distro booted.

This can be beneficial as it removes the guess-work for new, unfamiliar users (like myself) to make mistakes in setup or use. I thought it was brilliant at the time it was implemented.

Its Simple.

I don't believe KL has such yet. The nearest I can think of is that rockedge put in effort to port shinobar's grub2config to KL, but no actual user-friendly utility of form "KL install" to wherever that I know of. A friendly versatile utility would be great and very attractive for new KL users too I'm sure.

Hi @Clarity @wiak

I am working on a user-friendly graphical interface to make the installation of KL easier. The goal is for any user, regardless of their experience level, to be able to install KL easily and without complications.

Yes, I understand your directions on a KL installer. Anything that make it easy to get started in KLs is positive allowing users to comfortable use the work of these developers.

My comment is intended to let you know of their work that ALSO makes it easy.

Using Ventoy/SG2D/QEMU, to get to an operational system with little to no effort, they took steps to address such via use of the ISO. Their efforts have made is almost foolproof to get their distros running directly from its ISO file, negating a need to extract file, change menus, or craft session management ... UNLESS a user 'really' want to do so.

I'll help you on this, any way I can. Again, I just wanted you to know (and maybe you have tested their layout) of the Ventoy/SG2D/QEMU ISO booting ease of use they provided, thus far.

So, your installer addressing traditional frugal and/of full installation will help those who want to write all system components on their system drives. Their efforts thus far sets so that only the save-session is needed and the boot menus are setup to support the distro's layout. Thus I was posting to bring attention to what is present in KLs as the work they built-in was am important step for anyone wanting to fully use KL with a minimum of effort.

Check out the KL's GRUB2 Menu and you'll understand what simple thing they did to make this a no effort operational distro, OOTB. It is subtle AND unique compared to other distros.

Soon, a KL installer will be available. It's a small GUI written in Python. It
will create a folder, copy the files, and create GRUB. Bootable USB drives can also be made.

It's immediately obvious that this is the right approach to the matter, I don't even doubt that it will work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. :ugeek:
