hi everyone

distrowatch was a little slow last time but not this slow
i have just emailed them again telling them the screenshot needs to be changed
so hopefully they will get on the ball

you will note that they did change the date when our update was submitted
but they never changed the screenshot
i think they think they have actually completed the change
so stopped doing anything more
when they get my latest email they should realize they need to change the screenshot

it wouldnt hurt if barry k wanted to contact them as well
but i think its just an oversight on their part

The text on that page is just copied from the existing BookwormPup64 and 32 forum topics.

Continuation of Puppy description "Advertisement  " on Distrowatch was moved, with my last revision here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 48#p120848

Reviewing this thread I found this post by peebee about the Release Announcement, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 40#p120940, i.e., the announcement on Ibiblio, https://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/p ... ement.html.

The only criticisms may be that its both technical and requires knowledge of Puppy's system to understand the technicalities. As I see it, the Release Announcement's purposes are to high-light strengths and differences of a release from its predecessors. Assuming we're now satisfied with Puppy's Description, it shouldn't be too difficult to do that. Do you want me to draft something?

A picture accompanies each Release Announcement, and 'A picture is worth a thousand words'. Just showing Bookworm's 'Start-up' Wallpaper wastes that opportunity. This is probably overkill:

Multiple Apps Simultaneously Opened

But highlighting applications (and Puppy's ability to run many simultaneously) could enhance the Announcement.

DistroWatch has never been very fast with making changes.

Unless you are one of the Linux distros that pay them! :o :D

@wanderer Please try an experiment......

In a browser open up the Google search engine and type F96-CE press enter.

What is the result? What is the page position?

@rockedge

When I did it Google search had it as the first listed item.

That linked to this:
https://f96.puppylinux.com/

But some of the other links it lists with provided info, are not providing correct information when expanded.
If Google Search is using some kind of AI.
It is getting it wrong on a lot of listed items, that are questions and answers, about Puppy Linux.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

@rockedge I tried it with "Qant Search"; it was listed fully, from top of page to bottom.
I checked several of those links, and all were good.

Ok, but why discuss this, is it so odd ? (seems normal to me that google collects all sorts of online info).
(but I may have missed something :?: ).

Ok, but why discuss this

Webmaster stuff.

Looking to see how F96-CE as a search query in different countries performs. To get an idea what links to the forum and elsewhere are shown and indexed, and if the links are valid and go somewhere relevant to Puppy Linux.

Getting ideas how important Distrowatch actually is too Puppy Linux.

rockedge, you've done a marvelous job on the F96-CE website. I can see only two flies in the ointment.

Without searching explicitly for " F96-CE" or following it's link at DistroWatch try to find it among the 1 Billion+ websites on the web, https://themeisle.com/blog/how-many-websites-are-there/ or thru an alternative to DistroWatch, https://alternativeto.net/software/distrowatch/.

It would appear that didstrowatch is not budging to our requests. :(
Looking a bit at their puppy linux page, they point to the Barry's News page for any puppy linux announcements sine the "puppy linux blog" has been taken down some time now.
So I think what peebee's suggestion above to go through Barry Kauler is the way to get distrowatch to update their puppy page.
There are other links in the distrowatch page that should be updated independent of distrowatch though. The puppylinux.org site which is "owned" by 01micko, where someone may ask and get access I hope, and the wikipedia page that it is still stuck in puppy 9.5 from 2020, that EVERYONE can update.
So maybe instead of 300+ posts exchanging ideas here, focus our attention elsewhere that does not even needs any linux or coding knowledge.

hi retired00 and everyone

distrowatch has been unusually slow and erratic this time
this obviously is an anomaly because they got back to me the same day when we made our initial request

and we didnt have this problem with our last submission

but you will notice that they have updated the date on the top of the page
which means we are active with distrowatch

the only thing that they have not yet done is to change the picture

thankfully the link to the homepage works
and points to our homepage
which has the updated picture and links

im sure they will eventually respond to our requests

i will email them about 1 time per week forever
until they do

so no need for anyone else to do anything

it is a good lesson however to first update our homepage
before contacting distrowatch
this will hopefully make it easier for them to follow the plot

Did you have a close look ? Not at all, I'd say, the BookwormPup is not mentioned anywhere on this page (besides one review where it's mentioned):

Sorry (apologies for the rant in advance :D ), What's with you all Puppy Guys ?!!!!, is there not anyone ? knowing what to do best (rather then keep talking "about" forever in this thread):
Anyone else than wanderer saying: "Ok, I'm going to try my best to help with this" would be nice  ;)

Or perhaps say : Lets drop the whole thing, it's not worth it, btw, we're all going to die sooner or later (and if there's a next life I don't need distrowatch anyway). :D

Those who can help are the ones having expertise with it, i.e. done it before or/and know much more than me (or you) about the ins and outs.

The puppylinux.org site which is "owned" by 01micko, where someone may ask and get access I hope

I already have complete control of the Puppy Linux Wikka site. puppylinux.org simply points to https://wikka.puppylinux.com/HomePage which is obliviously on the same domain and server that the Forum and oldforum (Murga) reside on. At some point there was a suggestion to transfer ownership of puppylinux.org but I did not do this. I think BarryK has the actual ownership of registered domain puppylinux.org. I have ownership of puppylinux.com transferred to me from John Muga's widow. I am not sure where the domain name puppylinux.org actually resides and how the URL is redirected.

and the wikipedia page that it is still stuck in puppy 9.5 from 2020, that EVERYONE can update.

Since I do have complete access to the WikkaWiki which still works but is getting harder to keep it going. I can turn on the user registration functions on the site which at this time are disabled due to excessive spam bots being able to register which began to flood (huge amounts) the Wikka site with spam of all types.

The Wikka software has been discontinued and the entire project retired so there are no more update/upgrades so will not work 100% as the PHP goes to version 8+ from 7.4.+. Wikka was originally written in PHP 5.4+. There is poor support of anti-spam tools up to and including this WikkaWiki software. There is no really effective mechanisms to prevent malicious robot account creation built into this software,

So long, and thanks for all the fish

It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing the end-of-life for WikkaWiki. I have been an active developer with the project for 15 years, and am currently the last of the original devs. A lot has changed in the wiki landscape (and my own life) over the years, and TBH I have not kept up with the changes in the PHP language. In addition, it really doesn't make sense for me to continue offering new functionality for an ever-dwindling audience of WikkaWiki users. To that end, I will maintain ownership of the github repo and related issues database, but it's doubtful there will be any more development. Of course, in the spirit of F/OSS, anyone is free to fork the project and go off in their own direction.

There are 334 registered users currently.

To prevent the spam attacks and then me spending many hours fixing it, I only turn on the new user registration on request and then only for a very limited time.

A database conversion would be necessary to preserve the old information stored in the Wikka and switch to current wiki software.

There has been no request for 2 years for new registration. Some limited editing and new pages have been recently done by one user (coolpup).

coolpup does have a repo here -> http://www.smokey01.com/coolpup/

I almost removed the site completely several times and considered it again until I saw that some activity, though very limited, has been happening.

All of the user names registered should still work.

hi everyone

this is just my opinion

i see everyone doing enormous amounts of work
to keep multiple balls in the air

i think we should have
a presence on distrowatch ( very simple, screenshot, link to homepage, link to forum )
and a forum and a homepage

and pretty much let everything else lapse or become standardized and unchanging
and have it point to the homepage which then in turn points to the forum

we can keep distrowatch and the homepage updated
and the forum running

if someone is searching for our distro
they will either go to the homepage or the forum
and everything will be explained

i am afraid
that if you guys try to keep everything under the sun going
you will just wear yourselves out

less is more

Oh I have had my finger hovering over the "delete confirm: yes" key several times. The oldfoum only exists because I put in the many hours to rescue it and the same with the Wikkawiki site. It was suggested to remove both.

But what about the 14-15 years of information contained in them? This is the only reason these 2 sites are still maintained.

no guys

please dont take offense

i am just concerned about the hugh amount of work being done
and hope everyone does not overwhelm themselves

it is of course up to the people doing the work
how much they think is necessary

the homepage, the forum and the development work of course are essential
and i think that distrowatch is important

but as i said before
this is just my opinion and my concern

i am not asking anyone to do what i say

No way, we've put in lots of effort to keep the 2 forums and the WikkaWiki running smoothly. So many discoveries, technique and huge amounts of overall knowledge gained over time are contained in these sites. The forum is where it seems to all come together so It makes it critical to continue maintaining and improving the sites.

It is simply, I feel, the northern hemisphere growing winter of discontent. That will end and spring begin again. Overall, it seems to me, that Puppy more generally is in a better state than it was a year ago, which resulted in many efforts to focus on old Fossapup since developments beyond that were a bit fragmented and in somewhat unclear direction. JammyPup development, in particular, came from several sources, but never resulted in any stable final choice for main version supported.

Is there any reason that someone can think of that the distrowatch page is not updated yet?
Should Barry Kauler or a puppy linux developer try to inform them "officially"?
It appears to me the messages from enthusiastic users no matter how well written, do not go through and puppy drops in the distrowatch standing
:(
