@Sylvander :-

Mm-hm. Yep; as I expected. The glibc is too old.

In recent years, I've built a version of Pale Moon to use a much newer version of glibc, that's included in the portable directory, following watchdog's lead some years ago. I was also able to use this same principle to enable glibc-tweaked older versions of Firefox.

Current, modern Firefox, however, doesn't seem "amenable" to this same trick. I tried re-building the current build of Firefox - the same one I uploaded for you to try - to use the same glibc 'tweak'.....and it point-blank refused to have anything to do with it. It wouldn't even start, and was spitting out so many errors in the terminal it actually put Chrome's output to shame!

.....and THAT takes some doing, believe me.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I would seriously recommend upgrading to a newer Puppy for online stuff. You could install a 'frugal' install of a newer Puppy alongside your existing Slacko 570......without upsetting the apple-cart in the slightest.

We've developed an entire range of 'portable' browsers, that run from outside the 'save'; this prevents the cache from bloating your 'save' with all the crap it insists on hoarding (and this stuff can build up VERY quickly). The profile & cache remain within the portable directory at all times.

(I don't mind admitting that, while up-to-date browsers were still available for it, I loved my Slacko 570. As far as I was concerned, it was the bee's knees; nothing could touch it for stability, and I swore blind I'd stick with it for ever! But gradually software stopped working with it - especially browsers - and although I'm happy to stick with a lot of older software which does what I want (if it 'works', why try to 'fix it', y'know?), browsers are the one thing I do insist on keeping 'current'. The internet is the biggest attack vector bar none; why give it the slightest excuse to dump 'nasties' on your doorstep?)

Mike. ;)

I would quite like to attempt setting up a modern Puppy for use on my old desktop, but...
a) My hardware is 32-bit.
Are there modern 32-bit Puppies?
b) Right now my Slacko 5.7.0 boots easily and routinely from a rewritable CD.
This works really well.
I have various other [old] puppies, each installed on their own flash drive: don't know if in my advancing years I've forgotten how to boot them, but I'm struggling to get even one to boot successfully.
I tried to alter the BIOS settings so that USB is top [no:1 instead of no:3] of the boot list, and removed the CD from the drive, but it tends to want to boot either the Puppy CD or Windows from the internal HDD.
I did manage to get a puppy on a flash drive to boot, but not easily.
c) My Slacko 5.7.0 has been super-duper customized.
I forget all the features added, but here are a couple:
c1) The shut-down/reboot->save/nosave, with nosave as default. This is really VITAL.
c2) My favourite folder/file navigator/browser is Xfe [installed]. No doubt there are various other [not normally included] programs installed, that I've forgotten are now included.
c3) I have 3 web-browsers installed [Firefox, Palemoon, Slimjet] Firefox now doesn't function, and I'm using Palemoon-Portable almost exclusively, which makes me feel at-risk/unsafe. Previously I had backup browsers and Firefox was my number-1.

@Sylvander :-

a) My hardware is 32-bit.
Are there modern 32-bit Puppies?

There are indeed modern 32-bit Puppies, several of them.....but are you absolutely sure about that statement? 64-bit Pups can run a far greater range of software, since the days of 32-bit software development are very definitely numbered.....and before much longer it will cease altogether.

What does PupSysInfo tell you? (System -> PupSysInfo -> File -> Hardware reports -> Summary) Ah; you may not have PupSysInfo in Slacko 570, so....take a look here, if that's the case:-

viewtopic.php?t=3557

I'd recommend installing it if you can, because this wee utility is the "go-to" tool for most of us to see exactly what's going on with our Pups. It's very small - around 50kb - and is hardware-agnostic. If you can get the Hardware Summary report to run, copy/paste the output into your next post (between 'code tags', if you could, please; remember what I explained a few posts back?), and we'll have a look in a bit more detail.

Many people running Puppies on old Windows XP boxes tend to assume that because XP itself was 32-bit, the hardware must also be 32-bit.....but in fact many of those old machines were already 64-bit capable. Anyway; we'll try & find out what Puppies you're capable of running on that old desktop, OK?

Oooh, you have lots of Puppy options with that mobo...
Fossa 9.6 (F96-CE4) would be a great option to try from CD just as a 64bit taster...

Yes, 64 bit with approx 8GB of RAM. Perfect for trialling pretty much any pup you wish to try.
(You appear to have no swap set up though - so I would suggest setting up a swap partition at some point once you have decided which pup or pups you will use into the future...)

So is my motherboard 64-bit?

Mm-hm. Yes, most definitely.

The G620T dates from mid-2011, and the first commercially successful 64-bit CPUs/mobos came onto the market at least 8 years earlier. The last 32-bit only hardware was some weird stuff, mostly created for those tiny netbooks that were all the rage at one time; the last 32-bit only desktop mobos were probably the final Socket 478 Pentium 4s on the 400 MHz FSB (by the time Intel moved to Socket 775, the later Pentium 4s were ALL 64-bit capable). And that was around 2005/6-ish.

So, as Ian says above, the world is your oyster. You can run any Puppy/Dog/KL-variant you want to on that machine. Keep your faithful old 570 by all means; just add a newer, more up-to-date 64-bit Pup beside it. It's easy enough to do, and we can help you with any issues along the way.

As stated above, F96-CE4 can run from CD/DVD if that's what you want, but your hardware is a lot more capable than I think you realise....

Mike. :D

I took a look at the thread for F96-CE4.
Looks ok.
But it has been so long since I installed a Puppy, I've forgotten how to do it.
Is there a Youtube video you can suggest, and/or written instructions?
I found lots of CD-R's and CD-RW's, which is best to use?
My Slacko is on a CD-RW.
My drive will play either methinks.

Regarding a Swap Partition: my HDD is 7200 RPM, which is good yes?

Do you have to use wifi to access the web, and is it spotty? If so, F96 may not be the best choice. It's default Network Manager is conman. It's the best at establishing wifi connections but when it looses them it was a PITA requiring a reboot, or a reboot to switch to any of Puppys traditional three. See my post here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 90#p114590, which has a link to rerwin's new network_connect_update-20240114.pet which isn't built-into F96.

Frankly, I've stuck with Fossapup64 with my remastered Bionicpup64 as a backup. https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 666#p90666. Palemoon running from it sometimes enables me to access the web when all else fails.

My Fossapup64 isn't the original. It also is a remaster. But I did a lot of work on it before wizard published Friendly-Fossa64, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=4681 and ozsouth published several Fossa64 remasters (see this Sub-Forum, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewfo ... 9&start=25). While you can add XFE to any Puppy, wizard built it into Friendly with a lot of customizations to make it even more useful OOTB. I 'flinched' his work and included it in my Bionicpup64 remaster.

Both ozsouth's Fossapup remastered threads and the Fossapup User Contributed Packages thread, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=1239 provide many updated applications for Fossapup64. Peruse that thread backwards from the end/latest: some of the early updates are no longer available and others have themselves been updated. But OOTB, any Fossapup and Bionicpup can run Mikewalsh's portable firefox, palemoon and slimjet. [FWIW, I prefer his portable Brave. Brave now has the Slant community's recommendation for privacy and security].

FYI, 32-bit Puppys are still being published. See, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=9701. There is no current slimjet for them. But peebee has published a 32-bit Chromium. But with your rig I recommend upgrading to a 64-bit OS if for no other reason than that it is uncertain how much longer anyone will continue to publish 32-bit web-browsers or web-sites allow access to them.

Have to break for breakfast. Will cover how to get from where you are to a deployed 64-bit OS when I get back.

I'm back. You'll find a detailed recipe for deploying a new Puppy starting here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 1788#p1788. But since you're going to install you new Puppy to a hard-drive which is already formatted, you can do so by following the instructions which begin here, with Step (6), Creating a folder for your Puppy, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 867#p46867.

Slacko5.7-2018 has grub4dos builtin: Menu>Setup>Grub4dos Bootloader Config. So when you get to the Bootloader Section you can use it. However, the post talks about writing a boot-manager to a USB-Key while your objective is to write one to your hard-drive. Most likely, sda of your hard-drive already has a grub4dos's files and a Menu.lst on it. File-browse to your sda1 and have a look. If you see a file named Menu.lst, when you reach the instruction as to where to install the boot-loader it will be to that partition rather than --as written in the post-- the USB-Key. Although it's possible to just edit your current Menu.lst, it's just easier to run grub4dos and let it over-write the old files.

[I manually edit as I frequently try out new Puppys or rebuilt old ones. I don't like making a lot of changes to the boot-partition as it provides the only way to boot-up. Editing changes one file and creates a 'backup' which can be chosen if things go wrong. Installing over-writes. But you're only going to try-out a couple Puppys so the probability of things going wrong is small].

Does F96-CE4 include the ability to save/nosave at shutdown/reboot?
There's probably a thread or post somewhere on the forum explaining how to do this. I've forgotten how.

The instructions for the manual frugal install [to a flash drive] seem overly complex.

I found Menu->Setup->Puppy universal installer, and ran it and can see that installing to a CD is listed.
Thank goodness I don't need to install from Windows.

Save/NoSave at shutdown: See https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 183#p97183. That, simplified: If you boot from a USB-Key you don't have to do anything. If you've deployed Puppy to a hard-drive you have to do two things:
(a) Using grub4dos to create your boot-manager, edit Menu.lst so that the line beginning with the word "Kernel" has this pmedia argument: pmedia=ataflash.
(b) Open System>Puppy Event Manager. Click the Save Sessions Tab. Change the Interval to 0/zero and put a check-mark in the "Ask at Shutdown" button.
(c) Reboot, Saving that change.

I'm not sure any recent Puppy can be run from a CD/DVD. I think Bionicpup can. I don't think newer Puppys can.

Simplifying the deployment/set-up instructions:
(a) Create a folder on your hard-drive/USB-Key with a unique name.
(b) Download Puppy's ISO.
(c) Right-click>the ISO. Select Extract.
(d) Copy those contents of the Extracted folder into the folder you created in "(a)".
(e) Using grub4dos run grub4dos, selecting the USB-Key if your Puppy is on one; the hard-drive if your Puppy is on one.

P.S. peebee has just published some new 32-bit Puppys (and others) you can obtain from here, https://sourceforge.net/projects/pb-gh-releases/files/

My Slacko is on a CD-RW.

Given that you actually have good hardware - i feel you have a huge variety of choices.
- If you really wish to stick with Slacko 5.7 as the core of your system you may wish to investigate the 32bit/64bit hybrid that Mikewalsh mentioned earlier. I reckon your hardware is probably up to it. (But that may be a very complex way to start...)

- If you want to try 64bit pups then there are many to try and to be honest you don't need to learn how to "install" them - they should mostly be capable of booting from CD (that is a great way to trial them...)

- If you like the speed of 32bit pups but want to try one that has more recent browsers than Slacko 570 can handle - then may i recommend trying my own respin of Radky's Dpup Stretch 7.5??
Just download this iso into /root then burn it to either CD or CDRW:
https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/ ... 8.iso/file
See if it boots.

It is hard to predict which kernel is the best for your hardware so trial and error will be key. Puppies have changed so much over the last few years that I feel it would be good to start a separate thread detailing your journey from here.

Good luck!

I'm not sure any recent Puppy can be run from a CD/DVD. I think Bionicpup can. I don't think newer Puppys can.

I know for a fact that PhilB's original Fossapup64 9.5 can run from a CD.....because I'm sitting here, holding one in my hand, looking at it right this moment!

I think it would be a good jumping-off point for Sylvander.....not F96-CE4. (Not at this stage; not yet!) It'll be enough for him to have to get to grips with a newer Puppy in any case, without needing to learn the vagaries of ConnMan/PulseAudio/PipeWire on top of everything else. He'll be used to ALSA/Retrovol and SNS/NetworkWizard, so in that respect Fossapup64 9.5 would be a good place for him to start.

T'other Mike. ;)

Further info:
I just booted one of my old Puppy flash drives holding "Quirky Werewolf64" [by Barry Kauler].
Discovered I must repeatedly press/release F11 and choose the USB flash drive from the menu.
I'm reminded by this 64-bit Puppy that the reason I chose to use 32-bit Puppies [NOT 64-bit] was because 64-bit Puppies/programs were SO SLOW [why?]
I'm posting this within "Quirky Werewolf64->Seamonkey", it was SO SLOW TO LOAD, which was a "blast from the past".
Are recent 64-bit Puppies the same?
So should I stay with 32-bit?

Even more info:
Just now booted another of my flash drives holding "Tahr64".
Posting this within "Tahr64->Google Chrome".
Fabulous looking Puppy, super-duper features, I'd love to switch to this IF it is a good thing to do.
I see "Menu->Get Latest Chrome Version Tahr64": does that mean = update to the latest version of Tahr64 that includes Chrome?
Or update to the latest Chrome [that runs within Tahr64]?
This 64-bit Puppy IS NOT SLOW!

@Sylvander - My recent Pup updates all run from CD - includes Bionicpup23, Fossapup23, Fossa-Less. These all have updated security files & kernels. Haven't made a CD of s15pup-ovrly, but it's beyond the brief here. All have the save question on exit. All are 64bit & Fossa-Less is 220mb. See forum Remasters section. You could also look at peebee's s15pup32 (bit).
West Lothian eh? I had ancestors from Bo'Ness & visited in 2017.

Hi Sylvander! In the above case I suspect the slowdown to be the speed of your USB, which is probably USB2...it's better than CD/DVD, but even
a 32 bit Puppy would be noticeably slow. Gathering from your PupSysInfo report, you might be better served by installing a Puppy to the HDD,
you have a rather sizeable EXT3 partition, which would be good. Since you are somewhat familiar with Slackware based Pups, I would try
peebee's S15Pup64 or S15Pup32 if you prefer. A frugal install to the EXT3 partition would give more acceptable performance compared to
USB booting. For the record, I have an old Acer Aspire One AOA150, Intel Atom CPU, 1 gig RAM, 120 gig HDD. It came with WinXP preinstalled
and the HDD formatted NTFS, which I kept, and just frugally install Puppys to their own folder/directory. Grub4Dos handles bootloading and
I can chainload WinXP. My current internet access is via WiFi only, and the Acer has a 54XX series Atheros WiFi chip, so I usually have to swap
kernels and zdrv.sfs to get internet on it, but I currently boot S15Pup32 bit on it, and then install latest Palemoon 32 bit from Steve Pusser's
Debian GTK2 builds, along with chromium as SFS from peebee. I did setup a Pupswap file of 1 gig just in case it's needed, only time I see
HDD activity is when I've got like 4 or 5 tabs open in Palemoon, or 2 in chromium (LOL). That's just a reflection of the size of modern web sites,
your system may not need much swap since it appears you have 8 gig RAM but it wouldn't hurt to setup a swapfile.
An advantage you would have with a frugal install on your EXT3 partition is the ability to utilize Mike Walsh's "portable" applications, specifically
web browsers.
That's about all I've got at the moment, need more coffee! Wiz

Decided to attempt to make "F96-CE_4".
1.
a) Went here: https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=8392 [Latest stable release], and downloaded the "F96-CE_4.iso" file from https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/ISO/F ... 6-CE_4.iso.
b) Saved it to folder /mnt/home/05_F96-CE_4.
c) At release web page->1st post: clicked on link "F96-CE Web Page" to go to https://f96.puppylinux.com/ and clicked on "Download" which took me to https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/ISO/F96-CE/.
It seemed to me that the iso there was the same as I'd already downloaded, so I ignored it.

2.
a) Placed a blank CD-RW in my CD-drawer and closed it.
b) Went to "Menu->Multimedia->Pburn, and clicked it to run it.
I notice that "burniso2cd" automatically ran under its control. I had previously noticed that burniso2cd, although not listed in the Menu, existed in the Slacko and could be run using a command prompt.
I used Pburn to burn the "F96-CE_4.iso" file to the CD-RW in the CD-burner. I chose to make it un-changeable after burn-completion.
c) Burn now completed so I'll try booting it.

Transitioning from Slacko 5.7.0 to F96-CE. Help would be appreciated..!

1. I'm now posting this from within "FossaPup64 CE->Firefox ESR" [up-to-date 115.9.1 1esr (64-bit)].

2. The booting of this 64-bit FossaPup64 from the CD-RW is TOO SLOW for my liking. Is that because it's booting from CD?
a) Once booted up, programs run fast enough within this Puppy [seems so to me].
b) The desktop seems boring/dull/poor, any suggestions?

3. I switched off the firewall, because I didn't want [at this stage] to block EVERYTHING.
I need to know MUCH more about which things to allow and which to block. Can anyone help?

4. I'll now reboot and see what happens.

@Sylvander

I think (correction accepted) that your last two posts should be here:

DISTRIBUTIONS > MAINLINE PUPPY DISTROS > F96-CE > TOPICS > F96-CE_4 LATEST STABLE RELEASE

Also, could you please look at this post when there:

https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... &start=180

Page 7 - 6th Post down - and following.

I would be interested in what your result is.

Thanks

Boot speed is a function of:

a) Speed of the source media. (CD is slow, Usb stick is faster, HDD is quite fast, SSD is very fast)

b) Size of the Puppy files. (bigger files take longer to transfer from source to RAM) So Ozsouth's "stripped" versions of Fossa95 will boot more quickly than Fossa 9.6-CE (which is a VERY well stocked puppy).

c) Compression of the Puppy files. (gz compression is quicker to decompress than xz) [But there is a balance between items b&c here]

d) Type of hardware in the PC. (sometimes the loading seems to hang while the loader/init struggles to find - or substitute - drivers that match your hardware items.

.

b) The desktop seems boring/dull/poor, any suggestions?

There's HEAPS of eye candy stuff in this forum. Are there any particular things you want to see on your desktop? What kind of wallpaper do you like? Do you want some version of conky? Where do you want your menus and trays? Do you like pop-up panels and menus? Do you like to start your programs from icons on the desktop or do you prefer to start them from the menus and tray icons (ie do you like a blank desktop or do you like desktop icons...) Maybe have a look at this huge thread for comparisons (so much choice!!) :

@greengeek
1. I've looked at all of the "eye candy" in that thread and there's lots of nice stuff I could use, but...
a) The advantage of the existing desktop is that it has the "FossaPup64 CE" title displayed, and none of the others have that. Is it possible to add that?
b) How do I get the image files downloaded, and where to?
c) How do I change the desktop? It's been so long since I last did it I've forgotten how.
2. I like icons on the desktop for most-used/popular programs.
3. Don't know what "Conky" is.
4. The Menu seems ok to me as is.
5. What are trays?
6. What are pop-up panels and menus?
7. I'm happy to start programs from wherever is available and easiest. It can be difficult to find things in the menu. Think "needle in haystack".
8. Don't like a blank/empty desktop; it is valuable space and should be used not wasted.

9. Many years back I installed some 64-bit Puppies on CD and Flash-Drive, but never used them because the 32-bit "Slacko-5.7.0-PAE-ataflash" was so much FASTER.
10. "FossaPup64 CE" is indeed VERY WELL STOCKED, which I like.
11. See my hardware listed here= viewtopic.php?t=309&start=30 posted "Fri Mar 22, 2024 6:13 pm".

Hi Sylvander - from your answer I think you want a desktop that resembles the traditional Puppy desktop with usual icons - and incorporating some background wallpaper that appeals to you.

In general the wallpapers will be downloaded to /usr/share/backgrounds and you can choose whatever you want from that location prior to doing a remaster or prior to making a savefile.

And yes - the Pup title can be displayed on the desktop (that is a great idea as it reminds the user which Pup they have booted into..)

I think it would be a useful idea for you to start a new thread somewhere such as the "Users" thread here: viewforum.php?f=4
(Start a "New Topic" and list your hardware specs as you did here)
I would then recommend coming back here to link the new thread as I am sure all these experienced puppians in this thread (and heaps of others) would love to help you get up to date.

That way you can get help with all of the specific requirements that you have, eg:
- Confirm which pup you would like to proceed with
- Work out what your preferred boot methods are
- Decide if you want to be able to boot multiple puppies (yep - you will!!)
- Describe what you mentioned above about your desktop preferences
- List any special programs or utilities you want (eg password utilities? Install utilities? Word processor? etc etc)
- List the websites that have been giving you trouble on Slacko 5.7
- Identify which wallpaper you would like to use.
- Add the save/nosave function you want to use
etc etc

I am sure that various contributors will either suggest options to try - or will even build you a specific Puppy matching your needs (Even i could build a couple based on your expressed interests if you get desperate   ...)

Once you have the basic pup sorted - then you have all of the @mikewalsh portable browsers available to try.

(To be honest - i suspect that you may prefer to use these browsers in "non-portable" mode once you have identified which one you prefer and which matches your website needs - but that is something to sort after you get the basic pup (and boot method) selected)

That is why I am suggesting a new thread - there is a lot of stuff to work through and it is specific to your own needs and hardware.
Just my 2c...

Thank you for your post of Sun Mar 31, 2024 8:14 am...

That's a lot of stuff you list, and as you say it aught to go in its own thread.
Will do that when the time is right, but I think I need to continue at the F96-CE_4 thread until I have succeeded with the SAVE/NOSAVE feature, because that will be VITAL when attempting to make all those customization's.
I feel rather overwhelmed by all the various aspects being discussed at the same time in 2 different threads, soon to become 3, or more perhaps.
I try to explain to my wife what is going on, and she follows vaguely and then cries STOP! She no longer understands a word of what I'm saying.

Is it possible for the forums to send an email notification when someone makes a post/reply to a thread to which I'm posting [or following]?

YES!!! At the upper right side of any page you have open on this forum, you'll notice a link that says "Notifications"...click on that, then look at the right side of the little drop down and you'll see a link to "Settings" and from there you can choose how and when you would like to be notified of something!
