Laptop won't wake up when lid is opened (SOLVED)

Post by Les Kerf »

SOLVED: switched to fossapup23v2

HP Pavillion g7 Notebook PC
Bios Version F.05
Processor Type: AMD A6-4400M 2700MHz
RAM 4GB

Slacko 7.0 64 bit
Edit: Frugal install on NTFS partition (Windows 7 is still active)

This laptop doesn't want to wake up when the lid is opened, it does seem to go to sleep when the lid is closed (fan stops running).

The screen is not totally black when the lid is opened, it appears to have a bit of backlighting, but there is no response to any keyboard or mousepad input.

The only thing that has any effect is pushing the power button to do a hard shutdown.

Not sure where to look.
Thanks in advance :)

.pet below is designed for bionicpup/fossapup for similar issue - may work.
After download, click on it in ROX-Filer (filemanager) & restart X. Then hopefully closing lid, counting to 10 then opening should work.
If not, /etc/acpi/actions/suspend.sh may need editing.

Thank you, I will give that a try. I won't have access to this particular laptop until tomorrow or possibly the next day; I will let you know how it works.

Sadly, the .pet did not work

I have opened /etc/acpi/actions/suspend.sh in geany but I am not competent to know just what lines may need editing.
Thanks for the help :)

@Les Kerf - I've tinkered with my makesusp .pet to specifically allow lid wakeups. (This may help you - I changed laptops & the newer one suspended, but I needed to press shift key as well as open lid, so began tinkering & made makesusplid, which works for me). As usual, download & click on .pet in ROX-Filer filemanager & restart X. BUT - must delete makesusp from /root/Startup first, if it exists. (Could use puppy package manager - in Setup menu - to uninstall makesusp).

If this dosn't work for you, please run in a terminal: cat /sys/power/state
& post output here. Your pc may not be capable of 'mem' & 'freeze' is then a possibility.

Thank your for your help; sorry to say it still did not work
I ran the command in terminal as requested, it looks like this:

cat /sys/power/state
freeze mem disk

@Les Kerf - this is a tricky one. Could try using freeze (at own risk). That is a lesser 'suspend' & requires a tap of the power button after lid lift. If you edit /etc/acpi/actions/suspend.sh in a text editor, & where you see the line with mem > /sys/power/state (occurs once in slacko/fossapup's script, I think), replace mem with freeze & save that. Then try closing lid for 10 sec then reopen & tap power button if no response.
If that also fails, can stop suspend completely, by either editing /etc/acpi/acpi.conf & removing # from start of line DISABLE SUSPEND ,
then saving that , or deleting /etc/acpi/actions/suspend.sh .

Thanks again,
I will try this when I have access to the laptop this weekend.
I am trying to convert my Son-in-law to Linux, but he is having a few issues with his laptop; I typically don't see him during his work week.
I will keep you updated as things progress.

Slacko 7.0 64 bit

I suggest you try using a much newer version of Puppy Linux.

A lot of improvements have been made since this version was released.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Frugal install on NTFS partition (Windows 7 is still active)

Make sure Windows is fully shutdown as a normal complete shutdown.

Do not shutdown in any other mode but complete normal full shutdown.

Any other type shutdown does not fully release control of internal drive.

@Les Kerf - I agree with bigpup - if you're trying to enthuse your SIL about linux, Slacko 7 is dated (s15pup64 would be better). A newer kernel could help - I revised 7.0 - see post on wireless drivers. Or maybe try this fossapup64 update, more secure & more features - fossapup23 v2 - see: viewtopic.php?p=103298#p103298

Thank you, I will give it a try when I get enough data to download (very poor internet here). Can I do a frugal install like I do with the Slackos?

I have been using Puppy Linux since 2012, mostly Slacko 5.3, 5.7 and now 7.0 because it has always worked well on my old Acer Aspire laptop, but I am mostly just a user and certainly not any kind of coder or developer.

@Les Kerf - yes, all but the very oldest puppies can do frugal. Considering it's an older pc, either fossapup23v2 or slacko64-7.0a should be fine. The newer kernel in slacko64-7.0a made quite a difference from 7.0 in operation for me (better video rendering & no hang on reboot).

I downloaded fossapup23v2 last night which solved the issue with waking up when the lid is opened. Will start a new thread about fossapup23v2.
Thanks for the help
