Hi,
I just installed S15Pup and am having trouble installing simple-scan. It's no longer in the package manager. I tried xsane but it won't pickup my USB connected scanner. I've used simple-scan in all previous versions of puppy and it always works. I installed an older simple-scan.pet but it won't execute. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Re: S15Pup - Discussion
There is no simple-scan in the Slackware 15 repository but there are 14.2 & current versions (not 15) in an unofficial repository

Frugal install from S15Pup64-22.12-230729.iso
When I install wine-8.13 (contains 32 and 64 versions) I now get:
# wine winecfg
bash: /usr/bin/wine: No such file or directory
Previous versions of S15Pup64 worked when I ran wine.
Unsure why this new build of the distro is giving me this error.
EDIT:
I forgot a simple step in setting up the frugal install.
Disregard this post.
Sorry for the confusion.

Re: S15Pup - Discussion
@peebee
the adrv is loaded b4 the main sfs... the zdrv is after. Seems to me that the kernel delta can occur if in the adrv, not the zdrv. My old Atom N270 likes it that way with in-order execution.
Money talks... no, it shouts, so that it doesn't have to hear common sense.

Re: S15Pup - Discussion
Very sorry - unsure what point you are making - what is the "kernel delta"?? Patches to the system go into a ydrv..... but you cannot patch the zdrv other than replace it

Re: S15Pup - Discussion
Frugal install from S15Pup64-22.12-230729.iso
I installed wine and added a jwm config line.
file: /root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal
text (between quotes):
"
<!-- group options set for all windows -->
<Group>
"
After those lines I added (between quotes):
"
<Option>notitle</Option>
"
After rebooting, most of the time a title bar is not displayed when I open files or run applications.
other times a title bar is displayed, particularly when running wine.
example:
wine winecfg
I have a frugal "tahr-6.0.5" installed as well.
That config line appears to make wine titlebar not display.
I wonder the difference between the distro installs that would cause this.
EDIT:
I noticed Firefox also displays a title bar even with that config option present.
I initially failed to notice this, because when launching firefox, it maximizes and the title bar is above the visible desktop screen.

Moved: Announcements about LxPup, SPups, UPups, VPups, Chromium, LXQt & Xfce addons, Kernels etc.
As I try to get up to speed again on PUPs, I have 2 needs unique to the following WoofCE PUPs; namely LxPUPSC64, S15PUP64.
Concern
In the Control Panel (Menu>Setup>PupControl), the Window Manager Settings button does not work. Is this no longer a feature?
Questions
How to add more desktops to the taskbar?
How to replace noveau with the nVidia driver? (Is there a PET for this on these 2 distros)
How to select to hide the taskbar?
Is anyone using a TV via HDMI as their monitor? For those that are, any issues with audio?
Any help, guidance, or references for these Slacko flavors would be appreciated.

Different builds with different desktops..........
JWM for S15Pup
LXDE for LxPupSc
JWM should work as it has always done on many different Pups so help should be available on the forum
LXDE is pretty intuitive, but a search with Google should easily locate assistance for most issues.

@peebee thanks for your responses.
YOur command opens desktop themes. Dont remember the Window Manager doing that before. Seem to remember a different window where the ability to manipulate ICONs and TRAY elements along with desktop selections were present via the Window Manager.

On a pristine reboot of S15PUP64 ISO via SG2D, allowing it to default boot without touching anything, S15 boots to desktop finding its SAVEFOLDER upon boot and setting the desktop appearing as it was at shutdown.
BUT, the folders I had created in /mnt are NOT present.
Anyone else noticed this?

Could someone make a current QEMU PET for this distro?
Using package manager results in this
Code: Select all

Re: S15Pup - Discussion
I was running S15...v230729. I used its PPM in Menu>Setup. I have, since, uninstalled its QEMU
I have downloaded and am now going to boot the v230901 to see if the same behaviors are present. I will install the QEMU from its PPM.
The QEMU from the 230729 (as I remember was version 6 release...thus OLD). Am hopeful the 230901 has a current version OR a current PET. There are some minor fix and parm changes with current QEMU from that old version 6. Thus hopeful for the current version, if possible.
Will post results later today.
Edit
Yep...same old QEMU v6 via PPM of S15...v230901 even after enabling common and other Slackwares in Repo update.

Re: S15Pup - Discussion
Because of some parm changes in QEMU and other fixes, this distro would benefit with a v7.2 PET or even an early v8.0.
Will wait for something that is little better available via either REPO or a PET designed for S15.
In the meantime, I will use this distro via QEMU on KL's and Bookworm64.
Thanks, again, @peebee for the fine base OS this is. Boots without issues in/out of a VM to its desktop via the ISO file.

Re: S15Pup - Discussion
Hi Peebee!
I updated to the latest version S15Pup32-22.12-230926. Great, like the previous ones. Using together with the 64bit-compat-s15pup32-22.12 package. My favorite Linux puppy! Use on PC and Notebook. It suits all my needs. Abolish the use of cables, Internet only via WiFi. I'm using kernel 6.1.55 64bits.
I really like your work and also Slackware, congratulations!
God keep you in good health!

tray elements?
are you referring to? :
JWM Tray Configuration
/usr/local/jwm_config/tray
/usr/share/applications/jwm_tray.desktop
If I recall correctly, on the default desktop, the icon is at the top of the screen.

Re: S15Pup - Discussion//Anyone here use any Multi~media Apps on s15PuP64??
Hello Fellow LINUX-Heads ,user and learners .
I have S15Pup64 & am fairly satisfied with it.
However when It comes to Multimedia apps ,I am a bit perturbed.
I can convert MP4 file with FFconvert -but How do I Convert that File into a PLAYABLE DVD <4.7gb> for a Standard Set box DVD Player , say Samsung/Magnavox(funai) ,Sony ???
I have a Family member who is not very Computer Literate and wants to see these files on there DVD player -that's their modus operandi ,just stick a DVD in Box and press play/Load. No mouse usage or Keyboard taps/ typing.

Re: S15Pup - Discussion
Using the latest version from December 21st. I always keep it updated. There was a problem when, using the browser, when scrolling the screen, tears appeared in the image. I never reported it because I didn't know the real cause of the problem. Over time, various S15Pup32 and kernel updates (currently using 6.6.8), browser updates......
I still don't know the cause of the problem, but it doesn't matter anymore because everything is perfect now!
Peebee, congratulations on your effort and dedication!

The install/doinst.sh is causing problems....... suggest pextract the package and run each command (chroot) individually when in the extracted directory to see which fails (bit odd doing chroots???)
I would probably delete these lines from doinst.sh, run doinst.sh and then repackage as a .pet or a .sfs

Re: S15Pup - Discussion
After trial and error, and installing qt5 from PPM, vlc now works.
Steps:
Extract file contents into directory: /vlc-3.0.19-x86_64-1alien
cd /vlc-3.0.19-x86_64-1alien
delete directory: /usr/share/kde4/
move file "/install/doinst.sh" up one directory
delete directory "install"
rename "doinst.sh" to "pinstall.sh"
add execute permissions to "pinstall.sh"
edited "pinstall.sh" to the following:
Code: Select all
# Remove old cache data and regenerate the file:
cd /usr/lib64/vlc
find . -name "plugins*.dat" -exec rm -f {} \;
echo "Generating VLC plugins cache data..."
DISPLAY="" ./vlc-cache-gen /usr/lib64/vlc/plugins

Boot problems with S15Pup32-240504
Hi peebee,
I've been using your S15Pup32 on this old Acer Aspire One AOA150, as well as ScPup32 and ArchPup32,
but this is in regards to S15Pup32, latest Iso from 050424...I extracted the iso to my normal folder, a frugal
install to internal HD, NTFS format (multiboot with WinXP SP3 and lots of your Pups), but with a kernel
swap from earlier ScPup along with zdrv swap to get wifi chip working and faster NTFS access. This works
well, using this method now, but with latest ISO S15Pup32 boots to desktop, then freezes. Tried 3 times,
no going past initial desktop. Have not tried with the "stock" kernel and zdrv, will attempt later. So, I went back and extracted the previous ISO from like 040324, everything is working as it was. I'm not sure what changes were involved with the latest ISO, will have to investigate when I have more time. Meanwhile, I'm back to using the previous 040324 ISO as my "daily driver" Pup.!
Wiz
ps...forgot to mention I use your LXDE ydrv on almost all my Pups! Will investigate both with and without the LXDE ydrv and stock kernel/zdrv.

Hi @Wiz57
Sorry to hear you're having problems.
S15Pup32 boots OK for me on my desktop with Nvidia/nouveau display from both ext3 and ntfs partitions using Grub4dos.
Sounds like a video driver / kernel problem.....
Don't think there are any relevant Woof-CE commits: https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... s/testing/
Can you boot with pfix=nox and run xorgwizard and select the correct driver for your display?
Can you try 240420 and 240413 which are still available....
p.s. moved thread to the discussion topic.

Re: Boot problems with S15Pup32-240504

Meanwhile, I'm back to using the previous 040324 ISO as my "daily driver" Pup.!

ps...forgot to mention I use your LXDE ydrv on almost all my Pups! Will investigate both with and without the LXDE ydrv and stock kernel/zdrv.Hi @Wiz57
Can you try 240420 and 240413 which are still available....p.s. moved thread to the discussion topic.
I rolled back to 240413 and everything is working as before, with the kernel/zdrv swap I mentioned. Haven't had a chance to do a regular frugal install
for testing yet. As I noted, when I first booted 240504 it appeared to go as "normal" as far as the old Acer goes, but when the desktop appeared,
the system would lock up, no input accepted except CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up task manager. IIRC the display is Intel integrated graphics, limited to
1024 X 600 resolution. But that didn't seem to be an issue. Will investigate and hopefully be able to find an error log somewhere. I may try both
the included kernel/zdrv and my swapped ones, compare results, both with and without LXDE. It could be an issue there??? but that is unknown at
present, never had troubles with your LXDE via ydrv. Sometimes that old Acer is just picky, and I never can determine what is causing problems...
like sometimes it won't load some of the Chromium SFSes you provide via get web browser, but if I load a previous one (which I try to keep a few of)
everything goes as expected. It just takes a bit of time to track down the problem sometimes. I've learned to deal with it, which is why I keep the
prior ISOes and SFSes just in case. The primary reason I keep those older kernels/zdrvs around is due to the NTFS format of the HDD...most of the
version 5.XX kernels seem way slower than 4.1X, as I think the Linux Kernel team changed NTFS drivers in the kernel???
Anyhow, it sometimes surprises me that the old Acer can still serve a useful, albeit slower, purpose! Keep up the good work!
