Cleaning Easy OS - how do I do it?

Post by tammi806 »

What is the how to on cleaning Easy OS.

I know over time it's bound to fill up with leftover crap or cruft.

I know how to clear my browser cache.

How do you clear out thumbnail cache that builds up over time from pictures and other stuff.

What's the simplest way to clean leftovers out to keep my Easy OS running like new.

Thanks.

Thumbnail cache can be cleared / managed from rox-filer. In an open rox window right-click, then select Options > Thumbnails. You can select whether to display thumbnails in rox, delete thumbnail cache (path to the cache file is also shown).

Hello @TerryH

Okay this is what happens when I tried to clear them or purge them.

Maybe there's no thumbnails to clear.

I'm installed as a frugal to the system hard drive.

Thanks.

If you want to do a radical cleanup:

Menu "Shutdown -> Rectify -> Reboot, with rollback -> Rollback to pristine first boot"

Then tick all the checkboxes.

As you don't have " Show image thumbnails" checked, your install has not created the image cache. When you open a rox window you don't see image thumbnails, you only see a generic icon displayed.

Hello @BarryK

Nah don't think I need to go that radical.
Just the basic cleaning maintenance that builds up from normal use.
It doesn't appear to collect a whole lot of leftovers.

Are there any terminal commands similar to

Code: Select all

sudo apt clean

and

Code: Select all

 sudo apt autoclean

I've used that in other distros for cleaning.

Thanks.

No, I'm telling you why you had no cache. If you do choose to check that box, the cache will be created. Rox will then display thumbnails rather than a generic icon.

Okay I went ahead and checked the "Show image thumbnails" box just so I could see the difference.

I figure I can always un-check afterwards.

Thanks.

Re: Cleaning Easy OS - how do I do it?

Hello and good evening:

I was looking for info about how to clean EasyOS and I found these posts.

I read all of them but I can't find the info I was looking for.

I have a ext4 50,21Gb partition where I installed EasyOs_Scarthgap, EasyOS_Daedalus and EasyOs_Daedalus_Net (net because I use it for brosing and do "experiments")

Today I took a look to Gparted and info shows 34.26Gb used and 15.94Gb Free.

Used:
Easyda - 5703M (daedalus)
Easyos - 18Gb (scarthgap)
Easyosnet - 6082M (daedalus browsing configured)
opt - 4674M
lost+found - 16K

I can clean it but I will spend a lot of time so I need something similar to CCleaner for Win or BleachBit, Stacer, Sweeper, Fslint... for linux.

(I looked for them usign Packages Manager and I didn't find any)

What program do you recommend me to clean in one click ?

Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

Have a nice day.

I've tried the methods that work in the Puppy Linux distros and none of them work in Easy OS.

I did the Rectify that was suggested above and it cleans because It deleted everything I had saved.

I just clear out my browser cache and call it good.

I figure when my drive fills up where the distro no longer runs I'll do a new install.

FWIW
I tried the suggestions in this thread. (sigh)
I give up.

FWIW, It was what I was imagining....

I totally understand your frustration, because it is mine too, and honestly, that’s what I was worried about too.

If you want to experiment and help Barry improve EasyOS, it’s likely you’ll see your drive filling up over time.

A fresh install might be the only solution eventually.

Don't give up just yet—maybe you can find some temporary workarounds or cleanup tips in the meantime!

The situation is complicated, you can use Easy Version Control to make backups, but It only copy links, instructions, orders.. registry, but if you want to make a clone of your system you need to use Remaster Easy Linux and it gave me errors when I needed it, so....

----------------------------------------

@BarryK related with this, it is a good idea copy all the instalation folder so when you want you can restore it or is it going to give you problems when restoring ?

I have an EasyOS system that I like to work with... Can I make a copy of all the folder so I can restore completely when needed ??'

Thanks everybody for your help.

I've used Bleachbit and it can be found in the PKGet.
It's an older version without Firefox feature why I don't know.

I used this link it's a newer older version also without Firefox feature why I don't know.

https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/search ... e7d425518c

I only tick the boxes that remove cache and temporary stuff.

I'm wondering if running in ram as a frugal install if much accumulates and if so does it dump when a reboot is done.

Make certain what every cleaning feature clears out / cleans out before using so as not to brick you distro.

I speak from experience of bricking a Linux distro or two. ;)

it's not clear what you are specifically trying to clear out. thumbnails and browser cache are often mentioned as extra baggage, and collection of such in the future can be remedied by tweaking a configuration here and there.

Each user has different uses for their computers, so perhaps identifying how your saves or .sessions or any other part of your OS is growing needlessly could be useful to setting configs that could help. GdMap found under menu > filesystems is a very useful tool that lets you look at disk usage and could help prevent the drastic "new install"

Basically just do regular routine maintenance that is needed.

Thumbnails.
Thumbnails seem to be hard to find which I find very strange.
Isn't Rox filer is used in Easy OS.

In Puppy Linux to clear out the thumbnail cache open Rox Filer and left click the eye ball at the top and there is a Thumbnail folder among all of the other folders.

Ain't the same in Easy OS which I find strange being it uses Rox Filer maybe I'm wrong.

The only growing of baggage my distro would be from is photos and browser use and that would be it.

I just think there should be or would be a thumbnail folder somewhere.

Seems to be in every other Linux distro I've used and I understand that Easy OS is not like a standard Linux distro but neither is Puppy Linux and it has a Thumbnail folder.

Confused but curious to know where one is hidden if one exists.

if you right click in a rox window and select options from the context menu, there is a thumbnails selection that brings up a dialog.
tick the box "show image thumbnails"

Okay so then I click the purge thumbnails and it did have one come up and then I cleared it.

Okay so it is a lot different in Easy OS than in Puppy.

I tried this before as can be seen in earlier posts in this thread and I kept getting an error.

Okay so I learned something today and it actually worked.

Thank You @williwaw I'm old and don't always see and understand things the way most folks do.

Hi all, if it's any help, I found bleachbit in the package mgr for Daedalus/ Devuan.
I put Bleachbit in the search for all repo's and it came up. I just did a clean , not extensive, and got 4.2 mb of scraps.
As a newbie, I can't see why it wouldn't work in Scarthgap or perhaps as a portable. Or something else if not it.
