Re: Slimjet-portable : Now 64-bit ONLY - v39.0.1.0

Perhaps there's a good reason that pulseaudio is running as spot on fusilli, but I can't really see it.
And switching to an alternative does perhaps avoid the 'problem' but doesn't really solve it.

This is coming to you from the 32-bit Slimjet-portable, running in a Xenial 'chroot', under Slacko 5.6.0 on a 2GB SD card in an SD-to-USB adapter.....my own custom Slacko 5.6.0, rebuilt to use the k4.1.48 kernel from radky's DPup 'Stretch', along with upgrading the glibc from the original 2.15 to 2.20. (The kernel swap was necessary to get audio working; at the time when the default k3.10.5 kernel was released, this audio chip didn't even exist in some engineer's imagination, let alone in actual silicon!)
Only in Puppy could you contemplate such a crazy combination, AND expect to get away with it for daily use!

Oooh, that's a very tasty combination. Don't suppose you may still have that Slacko hybrid lying around do you?
I am digging out a bunch of my older machines in an attempt to make them useful in one way or another and Slacko 5.6 is dear to my heart. Would be interesting to see what that Slacko could do...

Morning, @mikewalsh :

I'm solving the problems I had with my slimjet / chrome browsers.

I'm using slimjet 39, but version 41 is the last update.

Can I update slimjet 39 to slimjet 41 ?

What must I do, pls?

n.b.- this morning I started to test midori, and it is really easy to install it, what happens with slimjet, I made the same things and nothing happens..sniff, sniff.

Have a nice sunday morning

Just run the UpdateSlimjet script from terminal standing in the Slimjet-portable64 directory: ./UpdateSlimjet
(I did just now and works for me, now it's v41)

Hi @fredx181 .- I think I made something incorrect.

I went to slimjet portable folder, run terminal include the instruction.... but.

root  pp4mnkpuppy  ../Slimjet-portable64  ./UpdateSlimjet
bash: ./UpdateSlimjet: No such file or directory

root  pp4mnkpuppy  ../Slimjet-portable64 

Ooops... I thought that Mike included the UpdateSlimjet script (as subject title says), anyway, it's here: viewtopic.php?p=87787#p87787
(remove fake .gz, make exectuable, place it in the Slimjet-portable64 dir and run from terminal)

Solved, thanks a lot.

Things are really easy with the adequate instructions, jajjaj

n.b.- I suggest to include this file into the download slimjet portable MEGAUPLOD folder, and add this update instructions to the README file (I u don't mind, I will do this at F96CE_XFCE_FUSILLI page, because this solve a lot of "problems" (let me know))

UPDATED https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h7XUm8 ... drive_link SLIMJET PORTABLE 64 with manual updater included

Of course, all the credits go for the developers....not me, ;) :thumbup2: Thanks @fredx181 and @mikewalsh
THANKS

------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDITED (as @fredx181 suggested in the post below, I change the name so you are not going to find problems when install)

NOW IT'S Slimjet-portable64.tar.gz

Thanks, for info, not to criticize, it extracts for me as "Slimjet-portable64_with manual updater" which has a space in the name, therefore doesn't work when running LAUNCH.
Renamed the dir to "Slimjet-portable64" and works fine.

@pp4mnklinux / @fredx181 :-

Just so's you know, guys, I've just done what I meant to do months ago when Fred first supplied the new scripts.

Brave-portable, Slimjet-portable and Ungoogled_Chromium-portable have all been updated to the current versions, and I've made certain the updater scripts are included (along with another 'ReadMe' on how to use them). These have been re-uploaded, so all our major portable browsers are now capable of keeping themselves "current", in-situ.

Sorted! (at last...) :D

Clap, clap, clap.... CONGRATS AND THANKS.-

:thumbup2: :thumbup2:

n.b.- Only a first impression..... Do you think Slimjet41 works more slowly that Slimjet39 or it could be because of the cache? (first impressions)

I have downloaded slimjet-potable and extracted. However, not launching while clicking on Launch icon. However, if Click button it launches with sandbox caution. I have also updated to 41 by ./update terminal command and downloaded tar.gz file. However, browser not updated even after update command.!!!.
Why Launch button is not working and update not possible?

Updating should work (just tested), open a terminal in the Slimjet-portable64 directory (where LAUNCH is located) and run exactly this: ./UpdateSlimjet
If not working for some reason, please show us the terminal output.
EDIT: If downloaded from first post by @mikewalsh (MEGA link) it's already the newest version (at this point of time), so running the updater will show:

Code: Select all

./UpdateSlimjet
Update slimjet-portable to latest version...

Latest slimjet already installed! Version 41.0.2.0
Exiting...

@nnriyer :-

It's not immediately obvious, but you don't click on the updater script; it's designed to be run from the terminal. This is why I included a small ReadMe file to explain its use.....which I see @pp4mnklinux has left out in his "re-pack".

I still don't understand why he felt the need to do this.....but it's a mistake easily made by those without much experience in packaging. I made many of these kinds of mistakes when I myself was learning "the craft". As with most things, practice makes perfect; you soon get the hang of what you can - and can't - do.

Whoops! My bad. No, you're right, Fred; it's in the Brave- and Ungoogled_Chromium-portables, but I HAD forgotten to put it in the Slimjet-portable. So @pp4mnklinux was quite right about what he said.....

Good catch! Now re-uploaded with the additional "ReadMe" included.

I think as suggested by fredex, renaming the directory solving the problem like launch and update. I am not sure about it. Another thing, no-sandbox issue, it is popping overtime. User "spot" also not working.

I accidentally clicked on option "run as root" resulting in a creation of several directories in /root for an amount of 34 MB about. I successed in finding two of these directories in.cache and in.config, but they still missing other data left by slimjet somewhere around for about 2 MB

Just a note:

Slimjet version 43.0 (I run as portable) has outrun the glibc in all the fossapup64 derivs I run and in F96-CE_4. They all have glibc v2.31 and it wants 2.33. Slimjet version 42.0.3.0 is still OK in all of them.

My pups: LxPupSc64 and Voidpup64 with LXDE ydrv & synaptics touchpad drivers, both using savefiles. Ydrv based Jammypup64 (JWM), Bookworm64, Fossapup23 & FossapupFire (LXDE/PCManFM). No savefiles, no fdrvs there.

Which is stupid considering that Google always take the opposite tack. Most of the clones slavishly follow the Chromium source-code.....which is where all the cutting-edge dev work takes place, and is always compiled against the very newest of everything.

So what do Google do? They take that source code, then re-compile it against a rather older build-environment (several iterations back, at least). This keeps it available for a far greater number of users.......because Joe Average is quite lazy when it comes down to it, and updating his OS is pretty low on his list of priorities. If it weren't for the fact that most modern OSs update automatically in the background, many people would never bother at all!

Unfortunately, despite trying I've never been able to make any of the 'clones' work with a self-contained newer glibc in the way that watchdog's 'tweak' trick works for the 'zilla-based browsers....

So far, the newest (current according to @fredx181 updater) Brave and ungoogled chromium portable browsers are happy with 2.31 so Slimmie is an outlier in my triad of chromium clones. I've just left my portable Slimjet at 42.0.3.0.
