S15Pup is the same build as ScPup but using Slackware-15.0 components instead of Slackware-Current components.

S15Pup is released - viewtopic.php?t=7464

Builder of LxPups, SPups, UPup32s, VoidPups; LXDE, LXQt, Xfce addons; Chromium, Firefox etc. sfs; & Kernels

Hello, Peebee! All tests I reported earlier on SCPUP64-22.02+4-T.iso, I also did with S15PUP64-22.11-RC.iso. For me they are like pure water, with the same taste! I appreciate the updates!
Technically what I did was: In my installation, I changed the system bases, the Puppy_SCpup64_22.02 file by Puppy_S15PUP64_22.11, renamed (also internally distro_specs). For a "quick" test, great! Papaya with sugar .... :thumbup2:
I will continue using .....

God keep you with all that energy! :thumbup2:

I did a manual frugal install without the adrv. edit: 64 bit version.

These are my notes.

1. Manual frugal install pupmode 13 booted without adrv.

Code: Select all

title Puppy Linux SCPup in sda1 dir SCPup
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel /SCPup/vmlinuz pmedia=ataflash psubdir=SCPup
initrd /SCPup/initrd.gz

2. Tried to run my portable Vivaldi and got this error.

Code: Select all

ln: failed to create symbolic link '/mnt/sda1/DebianLinked/Vivaldi-portable/vivaldi/PROFILE/PROFILE': File exists
/mnt/sda1/DebianLinked/Vivaldi-portable/vivaldi/vivaldi-pup_nl: error while loading shared libraries: libatk-bridge-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove '/mnt/sda1/DebianLinked/Vivaldi-portable/vivaldi/PROFILE': Is a directory
Script completed hit RETURN to close window.

3. Installed firefox-esr from PPM. Got some "was already installed" errors, see below.

Code: Select all

"Packages successfully Installed or Downloaded

Packages that failed to be Installed or Downloaded, or were aborted be the user
at-spi2-atk-2.38.0 was already installed
at-spi2-core-2.42.0 was already installed
gtk+3-3.24.31 was already installed
mozilla-firefox-102.4.0esr

Missing Shared Libraries

Existing Libraries that may be in a location other than /lib and /usr/lib"

4. can't find firefox .desktop file and doesn't seem to run from terminal???
5. reboot and set up save folder.
6. still no firefox. Save button on desktop works.
7. tried to install palemoon from puppy repo. Palemoon works, posting from it now.

That's all I have time for right now. I'll try to install some other things from the PPM later.

Hi peebee, Glad to see your taking this on. Should be a valuable long term distro.

Did frugal installs of both S15Pup32 and S15Pup64, on 32 right now. Downloaded your latest chromium.sfs and am using it.

Did a quick comparison of woof-installed-packages with those from ScPup32-21.04+4-T and ScPup64-22.02+0-T. Very little difference, should be good!

One thing you might want to mention is that /usr/sbin/fixmenusd is running and may cause some people grief. Explained here, viewtopic.php?t=7148

No problems yet, not expecting any. 8-)

Cheers, J

Boot hangs on Asus laptop.

Post by TerryH »

Did a new manual frugal install of the S15Pup64 RC candidate release, on my ASUS Zenbook UM425 with AMD Ryzen 5800H. The boot run to loading Kernel modules, then hangs with message:
Waiting for modules to complete loading...

The majority of the puppy installs I have on USBs won't boot on this laptop. Most I never reported them as there were too many. For older SCPup64 they passed this stage, but failed with a message regarding switching to amdgpu

Just a thought, is there some way to get your browsers listed in PPM? It could save a lot of confusion. :|

This is very good. I've added some of my .pets (battery level; cputemp; firefoxesr updater; gtk3; brother printer) - all working well.
One thing I would change - when you suspend, upon resume, screen lock activates - newbies won't know default password is woofwoof.

Hi Peebee!
I'm using a module I named "kitweb.sfs". It is made up of packages I borrowed from FatDog64, essential for browser use. So I can use the same ROXapps browsers that I use in other distros, without needing a specific one for each system. I also tested Firefox and Google Chrome available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/lxpup/ ... /browsers/
They worked fine and in this case my "kitweb.sfs" was not needed.

Computer is home built desktop.
CPU i7 9700
Graphics GeForce RTX 2060
Memory 32GB
Frugal installs on USB external HDD

Both versions of S515pup 32bit and 64bit did this on first boot.

Got to boot process of starting X server and stopped.

Showed info about entering xwin or using xorgwizard.

xwin did not do anything. Goes back to original info screen.

Had to use xorgwizard to setup graphics.
Driver modsetting
resolution 1920x1080
Color depth 24
Closed xorgwizard.

Entered xwin
Boot process continued to working desktop.

So, boot auto setup of graphics is not working for this computer.

It does do boot auto graphics setup with other Puppy versions.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

hi peebee

really like your S15pup32
its my daily driver now
runs well completely off usb
pretty much perfect

1 thing
it looks for a partition when it boots
and cant find it
then waits for 60 seconds before continuing
it will then complete loading

I could maybe put PPM in a wrapper............... the browsers are .sfs so not directly suitable for PPM.

Xlock actually has no password - just press "Enter" to reactivate the desktop.

Hello @peebee
Excellent! Using 64bit version without issues.

Tested booting ISO file via

  • SG2D

  • as well as QEMU.

Saving sessions to Folder on one of the system drive's partition works. No issues found in this pristine preliminary testing.

Just booted up S15Pup32 from usb on an Acer Travelmate 5610, 2 Gb ram and 2Gb swap. No problems. Connected to wifi with SNS. Open chomium.sfs and watched a youtube video, played nicely. I don't know how old this thing is (got it out of a tip) but it came with WinXP. So far acting great.

One comment, I've never had any trouble getting browsers to run on your pups but if you're thinking of going mainstream with this one, and I think you should, you might want to throw in enough GTK3 to run any of the factory stock browsers. I've always found just grabbing the extra libs out of chromium.sfs and putting them in /usr/lib or /usr/lib64 is enough.

I have to say I'm really loving your Scpups, makes me wonder why I spent all that time playing with outdated stuff.

Cheers, J

Shouldn't GTK3 be standard for v515 with all Slacko apps be converted (or discarded for better ones) by now? Not sure, but seem to remember that Puppex-Slacko already did this with that PUP build.

Of course, this may already be in the upcoming.

In 3 days, only 1 issue found.

Installed @ETP's GetChromeBrowser PET. It did not report any problems and the utility went to the web and installed Chrome into the system. BUT it will not start resulting with this seen via the terminal launch

Code: Select all

# google-chrome-stable
/opt/google/chrome/google-chrome.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libatk-bridge-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Should that lib be present for this and other browsers or should it be a PPM install in conjunction with Chrome?

woof-CE supports building of packages from source and many applications that support both GTK+ 2 and GTK+ 3 can be built against GTK+ 3 automatically, without having to rebuild many .pet packages manually against GTK+ 3. GTK+ 3 applications eat slightly more RAM. On the plus side, they look nicer, they're more visually consistent with most modern applications that migrated away from GTK+ 2 years ago (like all major browsers) and if you have zero GTK+ 2 applications you're saving RAM.

(Vanilla Dpup 9.2.x uses GTK+ 3 almost everywhere, the exceptions are ROX-Filer, Sylpheed and some JWM-related configuration tools.)

If we're talking about revitalizing Puppy and future-proofing it, I think using GTK+ 2 in a new Puppy is a terrible idea: it's unmaintained for a very long time, GIMP (the only reason why many people have GTK+ 2 installed today) is almost migrated to GTK+ 3, GTK+ 2 will be gone from distros one day and it doesn't work on Wayland like GTK+ 3. At some point in the not-too-distant future, Puppy will need to decide which way to go - adapt to change and pay the technical debt of using GTK+ 2, or die with X.Org, GTK+ 2, ROX-Filer and other abandonware.

S15pup 32bit or 64bit.

Several computers, with different WIFI hardware, would not provide WIFI in any of the network connection programs.
When programs are run, no wireless interface found.

The drivers needed seem to be in the Linux kernel.

So I figured it was something with the firmware.

For S15pup 64bit

I swapped out the fdrv.sfs with this one produced by rockedge for his Fossapup64 9.6
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic. ... 145#p71145

Booted with this new fdrv.sfs.

No problem finding and setting up the WIFI hardware.

Note:
Have not tried in S15pup 32bit, because not sure what fdrv.sfs to swap out with.

On one of the computers that did not work before.
This is the Network Wizard display, when starting it using the new fdrv.sfs

Clarity, I would recommend uninstalling that Chrome, and instead use one of the releases peebee has done for his SC Pups designed to "run as Spot" from here:

Thanks @Wiz57 for the advice.

I was merely trying to 'map' results obtained from prior use of a forum Woofed PUP Slackware 15.0 with what I see here; namely @exton's puppex-slack64-15.0-uefi.

There @ETP Chrome PET '15.5' worked and Exton verified his findings using the other version '15' that ETP provides.

Based upon your comment, it suggest that @peebee's versions work on this release while ETP's versions do not for some missing element that PeeBee's addresses.

I know this is RC1 so I will wait for upcoming versions for future testing.

Again, thanks

Just downloaded and fresh installed RC2. Looks good. Had to try out the new Browser Wrapper on PPM. Should eliminate much of the newbie confusion.

Two comments:
1) On the message regarding not using the browser download until having created a savefile, I would add "Reboot and Save."
2) X restarts when clicking on the "Run" button after loading (chromium in my case). Not sure why this is necessary but I would at least add a warning that this is going to happen.

Also launched Alien Bob's chromium-ungoogled without "extra_libs". Worked perfectly, although I had to play with the launch parameters a bit.

Lots more testing to do, but so far very nice. Although I will have to change the text colours in my Conky setup to match the new wallpaper.

Cheers, J (and Thanks)
