Problem setting up wireless connection on ThinkPad X140e

Post by r96chase »

Hi. It's been awhile.

So, I decided to try F96-CE on my Lenovo ThinkPad X140e, but I've come across a little obstacle: the wireless connection seems to not wanna turn on. All I get is eth0, so I had no choice but to use my phone as a USB modem.

I really want to try this shiny new FossaPup64, but it's seems to not want to turn on the built-in WiFi antenna on it. I guess my question is...how do I force it to turn on? Not literally force it, but...y'know...

NOTE: I did try to feed it the Broadcom firmware, but...well...you get the idea.

I am a crash-course Linux novice.

@r96chase - I remember trying to deal with this over 2 years ago, so looked up the diagnostic you did, & the following
firmware was missing, as per output of: dmesg | grep irmware

b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/n16initvals30.fw" not found
b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode30_mimo.fw" not found

F96-CE's fdrv doesn't contain those files, but this one does: https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linu ... 7dec22.sfs
After downloading, rename it to fdrv_fossapup64_9.6.sfs & replace original. Use at own risk.

Then after reboot, I suggest you run that dmesg command again to see if anything missing, & report back.

@ozsouth I have downloaded fdrv_17dec22.sfs and will try it out in KLV-Airedale and KLV-Spectr renamed as 00firmware-11dec22.sfs and the direcotry structure bumped to /usr/lib/firmware

WIFI support is the one weak spot in Puppy Linux.

That hardware is constantly changing and new devices being made and used.

No way can an operating system as small as Puppy Linux have every possible driver and or firmware.
It tries to have the most used hardware supported.

It is a driver and or firmware missing issue.

Try what ozsouth suggests.

He is the Puppy Linux expert on getting needed software to get WIFI working! :ugeek:

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected :o

@rockedge - my 17dec22 fdrv is basically yours from nov2022, plus a stack of b43 firmware rcrsn51 provided here:
viewtopic.php?p=71830#p71830. You probably only need to add the b43 extras to F96-CE.
