slacko64-8.2.2 by norgo.
viewtopic.php?p=56495#p56495

Norgo has offered his version of a slacko64 8.2.2
Start reading from the above link, to find the work and versions, he is offering.
He has no control of this first post.
So any new version, he produces, will have to be a download from one of his posts.
So find the info in the last few pages of this topic

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, alpha0=salix, alpha1=slacko, beta=slackware64-15.0 (it is in beta) + 0 (30 May)

New topic because there are huge changes, mostly in woof-CE.

Changes 30 May 2021
LOTS OF 'EM
- see https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... ts/testing - lots of changes there, relevant to slacko
- abiword rebuilt (now built with goffice), goffice, gnumeric rebuilt (@greengeek )
- irrsi now points to irc.libera.chat (web -
- upgraded celluloid and mpv
- fpm2 upgraded (@666philb
- ptheme, themes (icon and gtk) are much improved, and many thanks to @dimkr
- MPlayer and gnome-mplayer are in the repo
- all upstream updates as of time of writing, firefox, ca-certs, security updates etc
- rebuilt dunst
- added b43 firmware (@greengeek - woof level )
- latest 5.10.x kernel

Old stuff below
--------------------------------------------------------------
More later - been a long day ;)

Link fixed.

For woof changes see the list of commits in the woof-ce/gtk3 branch https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... mmits/gtk3
Woof changes of note
- improved gtkdialog gtk3 support
- improved gtk3 theme support
- new gtk3 themes - bright mouse and bright touch
- better zstd compression support including mime support and icons
- zstd compressed sfs - this adds about 10% to the iso image over xz compression but apparently the decompression is much faster so its a speed for size trade off. I'm not totally convinced as all my 64 bit 'puterrs are fast anyways. It might make more sense for the 32 bit version and arm processors.

Slacko changes are minimal
- removed neon
- removed homebank (too old)
- removed pequalizer (+caps,+alsaequal - clashes with pulseaudio)
- changed to stardust bright mouse theme
- fixed pmusic

When Slackware 15.0 is out of beta, will this become the next mainline Puppy version? Like...will it be labeled "Slacko64 Puppy 10.5" in the near future or something? Thanks.

I am a crash-course Linux novice.

yes but the version num may be different. Also, 32 bit will be coming soon.

New frugal install on internal ssd on laptop. Really nice. Everything looked at so far is working well. Thanks for the continued development of Puppy slacko.

Just an observation, which I've noticed on several newer puppys. The Raise / Lower Volume keys don't work when trying to adjust by dB's by 1+/1- exec:amixer sset Master 1+,1+. I have to change the jwmrc-personal to use %+ or %- exec:amixer sset Master 3%+ instead.

3rd link (to devx_slacko64_8.2.sfs) doesn't work.
Actually is two links in one:
http://01micko.com/woof-output-slacko64 ... 64_8.2.sfs

I guess it should be:
http://01micko.com/woof-output-slacko64 ... 64_8.2.sfs for devx and
http://01micko.com/woof-output-slacko64 ... sha256.txt for slacko64-8.2.iso.sha256.txt

Thanks! Fixed.

I did notice something like that trying to fix the equalizer. We'll have to find out which alsa version changed that and put in appropriate work arounds. Thanks for report.

Frugal install on a 2009 Dell OptiPlex 960:

Setting timezone to Europe, Berlin in quicksetup is a PITA due to missing scrollbar in comboboxes.

Changed video driver from modesetting to intel.

There's speakers connected to Line Out at the rear of the PC, so no sound from pcspeaker.
The connected speakers i do not always power up and Pulseaudio has no option to disable Auto-Mute Mode.
So i set alsa as default and installed retrovol from PPM (though not perfect yet).

gtk+3 needs some getting used to.

Access to drives 'feels' a little delayed (noticed this with other kernels too on this old machine...)

Frugal install on ext4 partition on desktop machine.
After a "uefi" boot, both 'efibootmgr' and 'mokutil' work, OOTB, great.

This means that it should be possible to use Slacko64 8.2 to setup "uefi" dual-booting Puppy via the uefi/BIOS "Boot Menu".
And the MOK's enrolled on the machine can be managed with Slacko64 8.2.

Unfortunately, gtk3 feels like a step backwads, but.....

Slacko64-v8.2 Beta

Post by Clarity »

This was great upgrade.

Downloaded the ISO file to the BOOTISOS folder on the SG2D USB stick and it booted fast. The changes that @gyrog has made kicked in on the pristine boot, where if found the /Sessions folder and offered an upgrade. I selected the "no" option allowing the proceed to desktop.

Problems reported in the early release with keys mismatched, have disappeared. Other anomalies are gone too.

BUG

  • Utility to add Opera to the system failed

.

SAMBA works, also.

Future ... maybe

  • GRUB2 utilities within

  • Laptop webcam test on the PUP's Menu; many under Utility

  • A Conky similar to FossaPUP as an option in PUP's Menu

System is responsively smooth and Nice layout!

System "session-save" at shutdown placed the save in the /Sessions folder. Great outcome of all of the WoofCE teamwork toward this end! Thanks

Strange about the opera bug as I just tested right now. Can you describe what happened? Maybe run dl_chrome_opera.sh form a commandline?

A quick gtk3 test...
I am impressed. Already looking really good! Of course issues - what else to expect...
@01micko I am absolutely sure you know these issues, but it's in my bones reporting here ;)
Attached images shows gtk3 to the left - gtk2 to the right

- Some gtkdialog guis is missing icons in <tree>. This is unique gtk-themes set for each gui. Tray-configuration (jwm_config) shows icons as expected.
- pTheme doesn't show <buttons> for global themes without border (-relief="2").
- <frame> is shown in 3D mode instead of flat as the default option in gtk2. No problem at all, but I get a sneaky gtk1-feeling with that...
- <hbox scrollable="true"> shows a 3D frame in gtk2 (as around the global themes in pTheme). In gtk3, no frame is shown.
- No scrollbars in <comboboxtext> is troublesome when list is long - as in quicksetup - choose timezone

Slacko64-8.2beta GTK3.24+

Post by Clarity »

GTK concerns
As the industry (Linux) moves to GTK4 (latest GNOME), PUP will need to not lose sight and begin the trek sooner rather than later. Getting the community 'hooked' on 3.24+ should be viewed as a shortstop for now as PUP move away from GTK2. But the current experienced gained from 2 to 3 should not be lost and used as a learning springboard to v4.

@01micko Pristine boot, FirstRUN setup. Chrome PET is installed. Opera install attempt as follows:
Menu>Setup>Download ...Opera

Re: slacko64-8.2 - gpicview issue

Post by HerrBert »

GPicView doesn't work properly:

When opening a small image, gpicview switches to original size. Browsing to a larger image and scrolling produces blank window with flickering image.

GPicView.gif
GPicView.gif (200.24 KiB) Viewed 2357 times

Also .gif files do not play in gpicview. Though they get animated if you resize the window, but i guess that's not the purpose of an animated image.

Slacko64-8.2 on TV over HDMI

Post by Clarity »

Prior testing was done on an Intel CPU Core 2 with only the minor issue reported earlier.

I have couple systems with nVidia and HDMI to TV. I am now testing one of them.

Questions

  1. Anyone else use a TV as a monitor via HDMI?

  2. If so, any issues?

In my case over HDMI to the TV in a pristine boot (that is NO prior save-session upgrades)

  • v8.0 gave video but audio was a struggle

  • V8.1 was better with little to no hassle

Today, an a PC with an nVidia card and its 4K TV

  • V8.2, the video on pristine does NOT yield a usable desktop. I get a odd color screen with no ability to interact. Cold boot-poweroff.

  • V8.2 with No KMS get me to a VESA desktop whose screen contents and resolution is lacking and no audio

  • V8.2 with No X get me to a prompt. But Xorgwizard changes does not get me much better and no audio

V8.2 - Taking the option for a save-session upgrade on a v8.0 save-session get me the "expected" desktop & audio
Thus, the only success I am achieving in HDMI+TV to the desktop is via upgrading an old save-session.

Itsupgrading a save-session to get to desktop cleanly is not what I want: I wanted to start use of v8.2 pristinely fresh with no prior problems, bugs, or packages from the old 8.0-8.1 versions.

Edit: The prior versions (v8.0/v8.1) were starting the desktop with nouveau. This version is only offering "modesetting' video on the PC to the TV over nVidia card.

Perhaps the following settings can make scrollbars reapper. Just maybe...

... Somewhere in the user's shell profile files ...

Code: Select all

# Fix GTK3 scrollbar issues:
export GTK_OVERLAY_SCROLLING=0 # and see ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css

...gtk.css...

Code: Select all

*{
-GtkScrollbar-has-backward-stepper: 1;
-GtkScrollbar-has-forward-stepper: 1;
-GtkRange-slider-width: 13;
-GtkRange-stepper-size: 13;

@Clarity I didn't realise you must have been in PUPMODE=5 (no save yet) when installing Opera, and only PET is offered. I'll fix that for next. Same would likely apply to chrome.

With your graphics issue I changed some things to fix the keys bug and that has caused your nouveau bug. I'll look at that too.

@zigbert

gtk3.gif
gtk3.gif (217 KiB) Viewed 2166 times

Looks better eh? Most of the problem with pTheme is gtk3 theme related, and with menumanager the problem is that gtk3 has deprecated 'stock' and it basically doesn't work in css themes. I've placed work arounds in there that make the code smaller and faster with a small penalty by not showing the current desktop theme in the left pane. I took the code from PPM where a small selection of icons from /usr/share/pixmaps/puppy are symlinked up one to /usr/share/pixmaps - which gtk (2 and 3) know about. More about these when I make commits to woof-ce/gtk3 branch. These are merely teething troubles.

As for the non appearance of scrollbars in comboboxtext I'm stumped. I tried @step 's work around but it doesn't work for me. Maybe we need to use a 'menu' in quicksetup.

@HerrBert thanks for testing. We'll see if we can upgrade gpicview for next release to see if your issues get fixed. If not we'll try another image viewer.

@esos also thanks for testing. We have been working on a fix for sound as Spot in browsers with pulseaudio. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Trialling CD boot of Slacko64_8.2 on a Dell inspiron 1545 laptop from the Vista era with the following results:
(Download was May13)

Positives:

PupMTP works great connecting a Samsung Galaxy A01 Core. Excellent!
Tap-To-Click is already off which i love. (even though psynclient says touchpad is ON which is odd)

Issues:

- L3afpad ?? Unusual spelling in menu

- Abiword using Times New roman - non serif font shows up instead (Arial?).
If use monospace nothing shows up at all. Then Abiword shuts down.

- Quicksetup took forever to scroll down to Auckland Pacific as there is no drag bar
(looks like you already know about that)

- Pupmixer did not show slider labels. I guess they are there but window size hides them.

- SNS and network wizard showed eth0 but did not detect wireless card although it is shown in sysinfo
(Did not try frisbee)

Indeed, it's a missing firmware issue. Probably another issue with the "cutting" process where we decide what firmware to keep.

@greengeek You can try to take /lib/firmware/b43* from any other Puppy and put it in /lib/firmware.

Thanks dimkr - this worked perfectly.
First i set up boot from usb instead of CD then I took the directories /lib/firmware/b43 and lib/firmware/b43legacy from xenial64 and grafted them into the Slacko fdrv on the usb stick.
Posting from it now.
After adding the firmware into the fdrv I did notice a message during boot that i did not see before (may have happened previously but maybe i had not noticed it before this)

Wrong EFI loader signature

Extra question:
-Before adding the b43 firmware into the fdrv and rebooting i had tried adding the firmware into the running system then doing a restart-X then re-running SNS but the system obviously did not try to access the new firmware and still could not see the wifi adapter.
- Is there anything else I could have done while the system was running to force it to see the newly added firmware? Or was a full reboot the only way to solve it?

Thanks for the help! Further testing underway.

try to unload the module manually by command
rmmod modulename

to force unload module use
rmmod --force modulename

and reload the module by command
modprobe modulename

Wrong EFI loader signature

This is harmless, as far as I know. This error is written when you boot a UEFI-capable kernel using BIOS, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, as @norgo said - rmmod b43 (or something else instead of b43, if this is not the correct driver name), then modprobe b43.

Thanks norgo - just to make sure i understand - are you saying that the module name is the same as the firmware file name?
(So i should work out which of the b43 firmware files matches my adapter then load that firmware file name as a module?)
Cheers!
