Re: My EFI Partition Contents - What's Wrong?

Here's what I ended up doing, as has been suggested:

1) I saved the contents of sda1 (ESP), which was installed by Puppy, on another drive, and deleted everything from sda1.
2) I re-installed the latest version of MX and let it install GRUB2.
3) I moved the new contents of sda1 and replaced with ...

I think it may be helpful to differeniate between boot loaders and bootloader installers.

That's a good point to keep in mind.
Thanks!

Re: My EFI Partition Contents - What's Wrong?

This is the classic problem of getting a boot loader to boot all OS's installed.

^^^ Exactly!

So far, I have made a couple of copies of the boot partition sda1 and deleted the files on that partition. I'm currently experimenting with various bootloaders to see which I like best. The weird ...

My EFI Partition Contents - What's Wrong? (solved)

Computer has GPT partitions. I am multibooting Fossapup, EasyOS, Mabox, and MX 23 (which actually doesn't boot since being newly installed, replacing the last version). I tried Limine (from EasyOS) and other bootloaders, but it still comes up with Puppy's GRUB2 menu. (By the way, there is no Windows ...

Re: Truncated EasyOS Kirkstone won't work in Ventoy USB stick

Hey, it works now!

I am booting an unadulterated (no "truncating") EasyOS 5.2.1 with Ventoy 1.0.91 and it works fine. I tried it on two different USB sticks and both work. Save session works also.

Any one else have this problem? I still can't get it to work. File size after truncate command is 2048MB so it seems to have expanded correctly.

Re: Truncated EasyOS Kirkstone won't work in Ventoy USB stick

I think by "truncate" they mean using the truncate command to extend the size of the file. Counterintuitively, the truncate command can be used to extend a file by specifying a size larger than the file you're "truncating". So basically they're doing the equivalent of making a disk image file and ...

Truncated EasyOS Kirkstone won't work in Ventoy USB stick

EasyOS 4 worked fine on a Ventoy USB stick, tweaking the file with the truncate command. But I tried it with Kirkstone (4.99, 4.101 as well as 5.0) and it just gave me the original error prior to "truncating."

I even tried 3G instead of 2G but no go. Is it me ...

Which of the 4 options (shown here) did you create your Ventoy USB with?

I ran "VentoyGUI.x86_64" on my GPT partitioned computer with no Secure Boot, and no Windows at all.

I built my Ventoy USB using their "VentoyGUI.x86_64" script included in the Linux version.

ISObooter does work great with S15 and any other puppy.

It has little to nothing to do with your USB sticks, rather, it a problem that has been around since VEntoy started.

S15pup on Ventoy

I am having problems trying to boot both 64- and 32-bit versions with Ventoy. I have tried multiple flash drives. I am at work, so haven't done a thorough forum search. If there has been a thread on this, please point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Re: How to update software/Vivaldi in puppy linux

Are there no Vivaldi sfs packages anymore? I have been using those, but haven't updated in a while. Now when I try to use Vivaldi's Sync feature, it says I need to update to 5.1 (I'm currently on 3.5). I'm using FossaPup64 frugal install.

Re: Screwed Up The Partitions Trying To Upgrade MX Linux

Ditto what rcrsn51 wrote. But this is also the time to begin thinking about obtaining an external drive (or hard-drive with USB-Adapter) to use to backup your Puppys and Windows; or at least your data. At some point you may want to try a new Linux Distro or unscramble the mess you've got. If ...

Re: Screwed Up The Partitions Trying To Upgrade MX Linux

I tried grub2config and it seems to have cleared up the slow booting, but I still have the extra "sda" drive.

Re: Screwed Up The Partitions Trying To Upgrade MX Linux

Puppy provided the primary bootloader originally.

Prior to that it was a Windows-only machine. I shrank the Windows partition and added the others when I got it second hand when my company closed.

Re: Screwed Up The Partitions Trying To Upgrade MX Linux

Now that I've almost got everything backed up, would it be a good idea to just switch to GPT? In my BIOS there's a setting where you can choose Legacy or UEFI so I'm guessing it's possible?

Specifically, if I pudd-copied Win10 (or Fossapup, etc.) to a file from the Legacy MBR system and then ...

Anyway, you would restore the mbr from a bak file like this:

Re: Screwed Up The Partitions Trying To Upgrade MX Linux

I see that your partition table is dos not gpt
That seems strange to me, with Win10 installed.
If Win10 came with the machine, I would expect gpt.

I think it originally came with Win7 and updated at some point to Win10.

And it shows that all of your Linux partitions are logical partitions in ...

Screwed Up The Partitions Trying To Upgrade MX Linux

Puppy's my main everyday OS, but I have several other partitions with other Linux distros plus the original Windows 10. When trying to upgrade MX Linux from 19 to 21, I remembered that it would't boot from Puppy's Grub4Dos (64 bit vs 32 bit?), so I went to Puppy Package Manager and found Grub2 and ...
