Re: Which Puppy Linux for a beginner?

@twigboy - well, that's a first. Been downloaded hundreds (thousands?) of times & haven't had that happen - very occasionally it just doesn't work. Sorry that happened to you. As I said before, that wireless is a problematic chip in Linux.

Re: 6.6.28 64bit LOW-LATENCY Kernel NON-USRMERGE Aufs/Overlayfs

wadu - Welcome! For fossapup64/bionicpup64, you would use the Ubuntu flavour. For s15pup64/ScPup64 you would use the Slacko flavour. For Jammypup64 you need a USRMERGE kernel - or to run (at least) the Ubuntu flavour kernel-modules file through a converter as in middle of 1st post. My kernel 6.6.25...

@Ged - in case it's useful, our kernel archive is here: https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linux_Huge-Kernels
i686 & pae kernels are 32bit. Last 32bit one I made was 5.10.189-pae , 9 months ago.

Re: Bionicpup64: Boot Issue on Older PC with USB HDD - updating initrd.gz?

@ozboomer - newish drive, oldish kernel. Could be an issue? I made a 2023 update of bionicpup64 (in Remasters section of forum) with kernel 5.10.182. I know that kernel solved problems in slacko 7. Possibility? (I'm out of ideas now).

Re: Which Puppy Linux for a beginner?

twigboy - ah, you have 1 of the 'nasty 10' broadcom chips, needing a kernel-specific wl driver. I've made many. See: https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?p=10900#p10900 Install after appropriate download, by clicking on .pet in filemanager & when installed, try to connect. For bluetooth, ...

Re: Bionicpup64: Boot Issue on Older PC with USB HDD - updating initrd.gz?

@ozboomer - yes, 100mb fat32 boot partition & big ext3/4 working partition a good idea, with label via gparted.
Where you have rootwait , maybe try wait 10 instead.

Re: Bionicpup64: Boot Issue on Older PC with USB HDD - updating initrd.gz?

@ozboomer - rootwait is its own, not in pfix - replace the comma after fsckp with a space. Your using pdrv=SABU (if that is the label the working partition has, via gparted), should allow it to be found. Maybe try lowercase in gparted, then in grub.

dimkr - I ran vanilladpup-9.3.40 (my very compressed version) & it looks like a puppy to me, except you've eliminated some long-term deficiencies & opened new possibilities. If that was the only thing we had to call puppy, it really would suffice. And we currently have many other choices too.

Re: Whats up in Puppy World

400mb is not achievable in VanillaDpup. Is 700mb (CD size) possible? I experimented with 9.x (which may have a short future). With Bookwormpup64, I made a CD version via higher compression. I've tried it with VanillaDpup-9.3.40 & come up with 698mb, using -b 1M -comp xz -Xdict-size 75% . Will fi...

@peebee - openh64 (2.3.2) & widevine (4.10.2710.0) versions downloaded are the same in 240323 & 240505. checkdeps didn't reveal any relevant libs missing. Mysterious. I confirm chromium64-alien works, so definitely a firefox issue.

@peebee - disappointingly, this s15pup64, as is (like 240505 & without any customising), will not play DRM videos via Firefox ESR (240420 & earlier did).

Re: Lowest RAM and CPU puppy?

@FloraMae - I made some puppy derivatives for older machines. I would recommend 2Gb ram, but 1Gb (maybe 512Mb) with a swapfile would work. Although I'm using an i5 with 12Gb ram, below are the usages for Fossa64-Medium, on Startup & then with Palemoon running:

@fbagnato - that message is usually due to a bootloader mismatch - possibly looking for an efi file on a non-efi system. It won't cause harm.

@fbagnato - you should have only 1 active initrd line - so place # to the left of the old one. Not sure what the auto-install microcode will do. Nice to see you're progressing well.

FloraMae - I have discovered this is a permissions issue. Strange that this did not affect the gtk2 version. If Palemoon (gtk3) is run as root (rather than default as spot), all icons appear. To run as root - see bottom of 1st post OR do this: in filemanager, go into /opt/palemoon64 & drag pale...

Re: Fossa64-Less - a small pup with many features

@FloraMae - interesting. I hadn't noticed that when I switched from gtk2 to gtk3 palemoon. Hovering a mouse over unlabelled icons identifies them. Doesn't affect operation, but is untidy. Can't see an easy fix.

fbagnato - my kernel 5.15.148 is a usrmerge-only kernel. It is not for s15pup64 - need to use my 5.15.147 for that (see: https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?p=113087#p113087 ). Kernels must match exactly - you can't use one with the same number from a different source. The wl module for my 5...
