BOOKWORM PUP64 - hundido's testing of stuff

hi lovely puppy humans,
mods, my threads always wander and sometimes get renamed, and i really appreciate having an organized forum with easy to find stuff. if it makes sense to you to move/combine/reorganize anything i've written, i won't be offended; i'll be grateful.
i spent a few hours reading the forum today. puppy people are delightful. i appreciate the work everyone does and enjoy the conversations.
one thread included @bigpup talking about how it would help if people seriously tested one puppy distro, and produced something coherent that works well, with all the little bug fixes people did being integrated into one stream. i'm on board with that.
@radky 's jwm desk has one of the best "night color" options of any distro anywhere, and that's a needed feature for me to even use an LED monitor. (I'm working on transitioning my electronic life to eink).
maybe to try to be more organized, i'll keep all my disorganization with trying bookworm in one place, under this thread, and report what i tried, what happened, what i can't figure out, and what succeeded. i think bookworm is a great candidate for the next puppy public-facing release, and i want to help make it better.

below that is Element installing.

Element - says it installed, i see it in the menu, when i click on it in the menu, it won't start.
How exactly did you do the install?
We have no way of knowing if you did it correctly without that info.
We always need to know the complete exact name of the Puppy OS you are using.
The complete name is the name of the Puppy OS ISO.
There are multiple different versions of Puppy OS's on this forum.
You could be using one of the older outdated versions.

@hundido Bookworm Pup64 is a definite candidate for further polish, being a solid distro that also performs well and is very responsive across a lot of different computers.
Definitely try to start the program by opening a terminal (console) and using element-desktop
by typing it in at the terminal command line prompt.
There should be some output possibly indicating why it will not start completely. If possible post what the result is here and we can look at it.
Most likely a dependency is not installed or can't be found which can be fixed.

@hundido
For testing purposes, I installed Element to BW64 by entering the following in a terminal:
Code: Select all
apt update
apt install -y wget apt-transport-https
wget -O /usr/share/keyrings/element-io-archive-keyring.gpg https://packages.element.io/debian/element-io-archive-keyring.gpg
echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/element-io-archive-keyring.gpg] https://packages.element.io/debian/ default main" | tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/element-io.list
apt update
apt install element-desktop libsqlcipher0
At this point, Element would not launch because of a missing "--no-sandbox" parameter.
After adding the "--no-sandbox" parameter to the command line, Element opened to a "blank" window only.
Then, after adding "run-as-spot" to the command line, Element launched successfully for me.
It seems Element would not launch until I added both "run-as-spot" and "--no-sandbox" to the command line.
Go to /usr/share/applications/element-desktop.desktop
then change the Exec line from
Exec=/opt/Element/element-desktop %U
to
Exec=run-as-spot /opt/Element/element-desktop --no-sandbox %U
The above Exec works for me, but likely it is not a proper fix. Maybe another forum member will provide a proper method for launching Element.
EDIT: libsqlcipher0 dependency is also required and is now added to the above installation code

Thank you, @radky, that worked. I added in bold above the one thing I had to figure out for myself.
Is there a section on the forum/wikka/github where I can/should copy/paste those directions for the next person trying to figure out Element in Bookworm?

Element made menu listings in both Internet and Network. It works from both listings, and people say it's nice to have options, so it's not really a problem, but it's the first time I've seen a program do that, so maybe worth a mention.

I guess Session messenger is the most private, best private messenger right now, according to wise, trusted friends, and https://odysee.com/@HowTo-Do-Stuff:1/Se ... man-Tech:0
You don't have to give your phone number or email. Just make an ID and use. Beautiful. If only I could get it to work...
I tried once on this install and failed. Here's the code and results of my next try: (posting to save, will edit once I finish the terminal stuff)

It seems Element would not launch until I added both "run-as-spot" and "--no-sandbox" to the command line............
............The above Exec works for me, but likely it is not a proper fix............
do you suspect a bug in run-as-spot or element-desktop?

Fonts.
I'd like them to be bigger than they are.
I know, magdock, a blessing sometimes for sure, but it makes me motion sick, and taxes my brain RAM seeing in one place and moving in another..
Menu>JWMdesk>Screen Font>drop down menu to 150, and it's still about 1/2 to 1/3 the size my eyes would like.
On one of the puppies, I forget which, it was possible to type any number instead of selecting from the drop down menu.
In Bookworm, I'd like to type 300 and see what happens. Is there a config file somewhere I can change to make this possible? Or maybe add 200, 250, etc. to 500 to the drop down?
I'd also like to change the system font to Bold, is that possible?

File
The settings on the file program are really nice in Bookworm.
I like how the whole file name is displayed even if it takes up many lines. It removes the element of memory or guessing when doing something like copying a file name into terminal (sha256sum giant-file-name.iso or something)
File is perfect just like it is.

Default Theme
It's fine like it is for now, but just from experience using e-ink Hisense phone A5, then A7cc as my daily-driver phone for the last few years, I know that when I replace my monitor with an e-ink monitor, it's going to turn into a challenge. Colorful buttons on top of black display as black on black in grey-scale e-ink.
If you've ever tried to use discord on e-ink, you already know the fun of almost everything being invisible until, by clicking common button spots, and use of a 2nd device to help with navigation, you manage to change to the light theme. Discord's dark theme on e-ink. What a great example of what does not work on e-ink.
F96's theme, being grayscale, would probably work on e-ink, although it would be ideal to make some of the white parts whiter and the black parts blacker. F96's theme, and that Easy OS theme where it was white writing on black (maybe from EasyOS 2.8.something?) will probably be the most likely to work on the Onyx Boox Max3 that's on the way to be my new monitor.
Is there a way I can import the F96 theme, or that old Easy OS theme to Bookworm?

@williwaw
I know very little about the Element application, but the installation folder contains several chrome files including chrome-sandbox -- so perhaps launching element-desktop in Puppy Linux requires command-line parameters similar to Chrome browser -- such as run-as-spot and -no-sandbox.
For me, launching element-desktop in Puppy was a matter of running the application in a terminal and addressing dependency errors while also testing various command-line options -- finally it launched successfully.

yes. most likely on account of using Electron. I asked because with other similar apps, I have found either one or the other works, but not neccesarily both. My impression is the apps won't run as root
without --no-sandbox.

They have 2 different effects - some apps are coded to refuse to run as root - run-as-spot just runs them as a different non-root user....
--no-sandbox is a switch to turn off some of the security code embedded in chromium / chrome / electron which sometimes crashes (segfaults) on Puppy. To test, remove the switch - run the app in a terminal - use dmesg to view the segfault details.

The fontmanager of modern Puppy supports global fontsize options up to 150 dpi. If larger screen fonts are required, you can edit /root/.Xresources and change the Xft.dpi value. For example:
Xft.dpi: 300
Then close all desktop apps and restart X-server to apply your new global fontsize.
Please be aware: For some Puppy applications, the graphical interface (and/or screen size) may not accommodate an Xft.dpi value greater than 150.

Yes, you can copy backgrounds and JWM/GTK themes from F96 or EasyOS. However, BW64 provides many light and dark variations of backgrounds, JWM themes and GTK themes.
Simply launch JWMdesk and select the appropriate theme button (Background, GTK Theme, JWM Theme). Or you can select the 'Global Themes' option and choose from a variety of light and dark global-theme buttons that automatically set the corresponding background, JWM theme and GTK theme -- all automated by a single button click.
