I may be wrong in this assumption, but I always thought that what you were listening to on Spotify was your OWN music?

I don't use it, so I really couldn't say. But, by & large, it's not supposed to be legal to download ANY music from t'internet unless you have the artist's permission.....at least, that's always been MY understanding.

(Mind you, that doesn't stop most folks that want stuff..! As far as they're concerned, rules are for other people....not for them.)

I was always under the impression that if you downloaded spotify music locally, it's in an encrypted form so that your subscribtion credentials are necessary to actually play it. But I don't use services like that, so I'm going on hearsay.

Buy a big ssd drive and cheap cd's from used record and thrift shops, rip them, and create a library like I've been doing for 30+ years. I have over 12,000 music files that I actually physically own.

@geo_c :-

Mm. You're probably right about the subscription stuff.

I have an a/c with RadioTunes, with a monthly subscription. They have a ton of dedicated music genre channels, many of which I like listening to. For £6 a month - which I don't grudge - I get unlimited access.....and NO adverts interrupting every few minutes..!

One of the 'perks' of a subscription is that you can organise your favourite channels into a list.....and you can then download this favourites list as a .pls stream - which includes what they call your 'listen key' - and use your own choice of audio player to listen to this stream. VLC, SMPlayer, Audacious, Clementine, any player that supports a .pls stream will work with it. Me, I use DeaDBeeF, 'cos it has awesome audio reproduction, along with a brilliant equaliser......even, dare I say it, as good as Windows audio playback quality.

I have noticed that, if I'm NOT 'logged-in' via the browser, that the .pls stream won't function in DeaDBeeF until I DO log-in, then re-start DeaDBeeF again. Then, it's happy again. So, I would think you're probably right in what you say; I would guess that most similar sites are probably using an identical system.

I, too, have been ripping audio files to my own 'collection' for almost 15 years. Probably somewhere in the region of, oh.....1500-odd songs at this point. Those I can always listen to, as often as I want, whenever I want.

Mike. ;)

I have used vlc to record an online stream of radio
I have never had a subscription service, so you would have to research more about your particular service.

It's not legal to download music from Spotify.

When you listen to it online, a part of your subscription or ad money goes to the artist. If you download the music, you might subvert that process and then Taylor Swift won't be able to fuel up her jet. Shame on you for robbing her of that opportunity.

I have heard some horrible people have used utilities like youtube-dl to download from Spotify. Another terrible thing I've heard happens is that people use Youtube on Firefox with the VIdeoDownloadHelper addon that apparently converts the video to mp3 and downloads that.

Poor, poor T-Swizzle.

thx, i'll try vlc. how do i get the address numbers and the stream name, pls?

my choice of music s a bit antipodean and eclectic, so old CD's are rare, and $$$ i'm too infirm to work thu 2nd hand stores for the necessary hours, i physically couldn't do it, and i couldn't pay someone to spend the necessary time for me. unfortunately, most sellers know these are rare, and tend to price them up. i'm not a good haggler, i rarely get a good deal, and wheni sell, the swies won't pay a fair price. ihave to be willing to give things away, because no-one will pa a fair price, allas bad or worse than the Cash Converters. [buy at <=1/3 cheapest retail, sell at twice that].
