1)The exit graphical interface launched from the polybar works like this - click on the exit button in the bar, select an option and press "enter" then "y" or "n" press "enter" .

What I'm saying is that I can't seem to get the logout/shutdown options to work. The mouse or arrowkeys do nothing for selecting an option, so pressing y and enter results in the dialog disappearing with no shutdown.

Is mpd installed? I've used it in the past.

The graphical interface exit, launched from the polybar, works as follows - click on the icon in the polybar, a window with a choice will appear, let's choose a reboot by clicking once with the mouse in the place of the option (NOT double clicking it trying to select), then "enter", another window will appear, type on keyboard "y"-"yes" or "n"-"no" press "enter" .

----------------------------------------------------------
if you meant this message in the image below, then this is a notice about disabling the Touchpad at system boot

Oh NOW I GET IT!

I was double clicking on the first screen, then another window appeared listing the options y,yes,n,no, and that one would simply disappear. I've got it, all working properly.

Yes, that's the "disabled" message I meant.

Now I'm fighting with CUPS, I installed it, and I can't get the web interface to access localhost:631 as usual.

I decided to check every CUPS.conf file in /etc/cups in KLV-spectr against the ones created in KLV-bspwm, and they all are exactly the same.

I'm really trying to avoid having someone else do it for me, SO, what is the secret?

edit: Actually, @rockedge should know the answer because he set up KLV-spectr and Airedale.

how do you run it?

printers from Hewlett-Packard require the " hplip " package

Well I normally try to access using the browser interface. When cups is installed from the package manager it drops a desktop file that adds a menu entry called "Manage Printing." That entry automatically opens a browser to http://localhost:631/, which is the cups html interface, but as you can see below, everytime I've tried to do my own install, localhost:631 is not available.

Image

localhost:631 is enabled in the cupsd.conf file, and like I said, I checked every config file in KLV-bspwm agains KLV-spectr (which has a working cups @rockedge set up) and they look exactly the same.

So I suspect there's something Kennel Linux specific I need to do, like permissions maybe.

1) In the firewall, set the permission to access
2)printers from Hewlett-Packard require the " hplip " package
3) start ufw service to start on system boot ln -s /etc/sv/ufw /var/service/

Yes, I'll take a look at the firewall, which I already have linked as a service to autostart.

I also have hplip installed, but I need to get to the cups interface to be able to see those drivers. (Or I could bite the bullet and learn how to configure a printer from the command line!)

The " cups-filters " package provides driver support for CUPS
Running the following command will guide you through the driver installation process. The default configuration selections it suggests are typically sufficient.
hp-setup -i

Well that was educational, and all appeared to be going well after I figured out that the ppd file was in /usr/share/ppd/HP

But alas, still an exercise in frustration. I can't figure it out. The dialog found the network printer, so it could see it on the network, asked me where to find the appropriate ppd file, and appeared to install the printer driver, then at the final step, well you can see below when I tried to print a test page:

And the printer doesn't show up in printing dialogs for applications.

The ppd is in .gz format, so maybe if I extract it first it will work!

No. That doesn't do it either. And it's strange, because it finds the scan and fax ppd files after loading the printer ppd, and then at the end of the routine says either it's the wrong device or no printers installed.

I'm taking a break.

The one thing that strikes me is that when I set it up using the CUPS browser interface I use ipp protocol, and this command line setup seems to be using ip. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

@geo_c did you start cupsd as a service?

Make a link :

Code: Select all

ln -s /etc/sv/cupsd /etc/runit/runsvdir/default/cupsd

The Void Linux xbps package manager does not start the service after installation.

Yes it's the first command in the code above. How about a reboot? Maybe that will start it now.

BINGO!

localhost:631 is now found by the cups browser interface!

Thanks guys!

But I should have tried the browser interface before using the terminal command to see if the link was enough. I'll reboot and see what happens.

Nevermind

root, root worked this time.

no, it seems to accept it, but then when I go to add printers it asks again and just keeps popping the login dialog up.

edit: and I tried two different browsers, same thing.

In summary

The cups browser gui does not want to log in to add printers

So I installed the printer using the terminal hp-setup i command @Sofiya suggested and printed a test page.

It worked!

And I found out that setting it up in the terminal using that hp-setup command is a heck of a lot faster and easier.

Again, thanks for all the help! Now I'll reboot.

And cups is working well on a reboot. So the service is started.

Don't know about the gui admin log-in loop. I can access all the printers and maintenance screens, but the administration functions like adding printers ask for a login and doesn't accept it. I'll be adding from the terminal however, so not a big deal to me at this point.
