Post by wiak »

Okay, so it is same boot error, and thus same issue.

Lets try and get to next step of solving this logically.

I have right now (today now downloaded both of

Vanilla Dpup iso version: vanilladpup-10.0.24.iso from here: https://github.com/vanilla-dpup/release ... 0.0.24.iso

and also

ubuntu_jammy64 pup (todays build found in zip file in artifacts here: https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... 5873282985

I have checked inside both of these for their zdr sfs contents and discovered both have overlayfs and vmd.ko as built-in to their respective vmlinuz kernel. That is what we are looking for...

Could you kindly forget every other distro you currently can boot but concentrate please on one of the above. Since, from what you are saying, its installation is probably easier for you, I suggest you try booting that NEWEST Vanilla Dpup version 10.0.24 by downloading it from: https://github.com/vanilla-dpup/release ... 0.0.24.iso
and frugal install it to your nvme drive and set up limine to boot it and report if that worked for you.

If it did I will then try to help you also boot KLA via parts taken out of that particular revision of Vanilla Dpup (vanilladpup-10.0.24.iso)

If you can't boot that, then I am stuck.

Vanilla Dpup 11.0.26

What about it?

Does it boot from your nvme drive via limine correctly?

If so, give me link to its iso download

Give me a url link to a Vanilla Dpup iso you definitely have booting successfully on your nvme drive via limine. i.e. Tested by yourself as successfully booting. I need the url link to see what is inside it and use parts of it for KLA boot attempt - stick to simple. I can't myself find link to Vanialla Dpup version 11.0.26 - that was probably released a while ago. Test available release if you can't find url for that one to give to me.
Also you haven't actually said if it booted successfully or not! I cannot guess.

I suggest you try downloading and installing this one then: https://github.com/vanilla-dpup/unstabl ... efi.img.gz
i.e. latest version Vanilla Dpup version 11.0.54

and tell me please if you manage to successfully boot that from your nvme drive using limine....................

I will try Dpup 11.0.54

Okay. If you can get Vanilla Dpup 11.0.54 to successfully boot from your nvme via limine bootloader please FIRST let me know.

If that Vanilla Dpup does successfully boot from your nvme drive via limine, then you should then:

1. remove the old vmlinuz in your KLA frugal install folder and replace with a copy of the vmlinuz from Vanilla Dpup 11.0.54 frugal install folder, along with

2. A copy of the zdrv sfs Vanilla Dpup 11.0.54 frugal install folder, but renamed to 00zdrvXXX.sfs, and

3. A copy of the fdrv sfs Vanilla Dpup 11.0.54 frugal install folder, but renamed to 01fdrvXXX.sfs

and reboot the KLA with the limine boot stanza for that from before.

If KLA then successfully boots let me know.

If KLA still does not boot: send me photo of boot error this time

and exact text used in your KLA limine boot stanza

@nnriyer

You may be having a problem extracting the Vanilla Dpup image contents, though I presume you managed with previous version you then installed. In case it helps, there are various methods. I just used a mount command with exact offset, but hard to explain how to find the offset so best just to use method explained here: viewtopic.php?p=91308#p91308

However, if you just want the vmlinuz, 00zdrv and 01fdrv sfs components for attempted boot of KLA, you can download them and replace existing KLA versions by using wget as usual, but like this:

Code: Select all

wget -c https://gitlab.com/firstrib/firstrib/-/raw/master/latest/build_system/huge_kernels/vanilladpup_11.0.54/vmlinuz
wget -c https://gitlab.com/firstrib/firstrib/-/raw/master/latest/build_system/huge_kernels/vanilladpup_11.0.54/00zdrv_vanilladpup_11.0.54.sfs
wget -c https://gitlab.com/firstrib/firstrib/-/raw/master/latest/build_system/huge_kernels/vanilladpup_11.0.54/01fdrv_vanilladpup_11.0.54.sfs

DO NOT use w_00modules=usrlib with these ones.

But DO first try with w_changes=RAM0

I suggest that you don't do this. This is not a "version", but an unstable development build. Things that work in the stable 10.0.x series may be broken in this one, and many things are different in 11.0.x.

@nnriyer

Do as I ask please. I don't have time to mess about. The kernel/modules/firmware combination is just a kernel/modules/firmware, not the vanilla dpup development build itself. The kernel works fine to boot KLA on my machine, which doesn't surprise me. If the builder of that kernel objects that is between you and them - I'm just helping you to find a way to boot KLA and all you need is a kernel with built-in overlayfs and vmd.ko and that kernel has it. It may not be the greatest kernel in the world but we can change it later if need be.

Vanilla Dpup 11.0.26

I presume the one you said you were already using successfully was a 'development build too'. Doesn't matter. If that Pup boots for you, let's try its kernel (well from the newer 11.0.54 release of the same) - we are only interested in that component. Later @rockedge can likely build another kernel for you if you like - he builds them all the time.

If you had been using the apparently stable 10.0.x version that would have been fine and indeed I suggested that, but you were using 11 series and that worked so that's all that matters just now. Different if we were planning to soft-land a lunar module on the Moon with the result...

If it doesn't work, I'm afraid there is nothing more I can suggest. You could in fact have taken the vmlinuz, zdrv and fdrv from whatever Vanilla Dpup you say already boots fine for you, which I believe was 'development build' 11.0.26 you mentioned above (but change the zdrv name to 00zdrv and fdrv name to 00fdrv) - again that should have worked also with KLA. Up to you, I promise nothing.

Yes, but I wouldn't recommend this to others unless they want to participate in development :)

There's nothing special about the Vanilla Dpup kernel. You can find the dpup kernels based on Debian oldstable, stable, testing and unstable in https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... kernel.yml.

All my comments, including the above, were to @nnriyer. I won't be chasing down a kernel from any distro version he hasn't tried - takes long enough already trying out what is known to have worked for him.

I'm only trying to protect @nnriyer against data loss, which is a real risk with these development builds.

And the kernel @nnriyer used is available at https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... kernel.yml, but in a smaller package and not as part of an unstable distro.

Dear Sofiya Sir

Please note that BIOS setting in HP Laptop are limited or unavailable as suggested by you. HP UEFI-setup does not have a setting to change "raid mode" to "ahci mode.

in BIOS / UEFI, these settings are usually hidden - you need to go to the main tab (main) and press Ctrl + S. ... after switching to AHCI mode, the disk will be seen by the system as a normal nvme ... (RST is a type of RAID for nvme disks, which not every linux sees).

Downloaded the vanila dpup 11.0.54. However unable to mount the img file. Consequently, i didn't able to transfer files to Arch KLP. Seems that build is corrupted or missing some files. Usually in EasyOs, the mounting of iso or img file is so much easy. However, this build, not possible. I have tried in windows also. Wait for another build?

Oh well. Tried. I already gave you download links to the kernel/modules/firmware from that particular vanilla dpup to try in KLA, but up to you if you try them or not. I told you how to get them here: viewtopic.php?p=96766#p96766

If you are more interested in booting that Vanilla Dpup itself, that's a different matter and not related to my help attempt - you need to go on Vanilla Dpup thread and ask help there about that.

I dont have any specific interest vanila dpup etc. I have some inclination toward arch linux. So tested ArchKLA. Unfortunately it is not booted due to reasons beyond my knowledge. As suggested by you, I am trying to interchange Vanilla DPup files with that of Arch KLA as the original archKLA build is not booting. i didnt able to mount vanilla dpup 11.0.54 after download as per suggested links. Most probabily lack of my knowledge and inefficiency.

i think it is beyond my knwoledge. I dont want give you more trouble on that. I am comfortable with EasyOs etc. Just for academic interest, I venture into test archKLA. Thank you for all support.

Okay, fair enough. Maybe also a communication breakdown, because really I already gave you the files you needed from vanilla dpup 11.0.54 (to test using them to boot KLA), but you don't seem to realise that. You simply needed to download them as I said using the commands:

Code: Select all

wget -c https://gitlab.com/firstrib/firstrib/-/raw/master/latest/build_system/huge_kernels/vanilladpup_11.0.54/vmlinuz
wget -c https://gitlab.com/firstrib/firstrib/-/raw/master/latest/build_system/huge_kernels/vanilladpup_11.0.54/00zdrv_vanilladpup_11.0.54.sfs
wget -c https://gitlab.com/firstrib/firstrib/-/raw/master/latest/build_system/huge_kernels/vanilladpup_11.0.54/01fdrv_vanilladpup_11.0.54.sfs

But, moving on is fine.

According to the BK link you sent me the needed kernel driver was vmd and that is included in Vanilla Dpup kernel as a builtin so it was not surprising you could boot that as well as EasyOS. But... even using that kernel which boots/sees your drive partition, KLA somehow doesn't see your drive partition still, which I am sorry simply makes no sense to me, but how it is is how it is.

It's a pity, we have to give up - sorry about that - a bit frustrating, but good you have EasyOS and other Vanilla Dpup booting at least.

I have not experienced the high RAM usage in any Kennel Linux type distro that is functioning correctly yet. This high RAM usage is noticeable during an idle state? What does the processes list look like?
