Firefox update is locking up F96-CE_4 and BookwormPup64 10.0 (solved drive going bad)

Post by bigpup »

I am asking if anyone is having this issue.

This also applies to BookwormPup64 10.0 but I will give info for F96-CE_4

I started up F96-CE_4 frugal install with a save folder.
Everything seems normal.

It comes with Firefox as the default browser.
This is Firefox esr that comes already installed as the browser for both OS's.

When I start Firefox it checks for updates and seems to be trying to download and install one.

However, it never completes the process and seems to lockup the system with a process running all the time.

Gatotray shows activity at a constant high level that never changes.

Basically the system is unstable, locked up, and only way out is do a power off.

Right know I am using this same F96-CE_4 from a clean start.
Only using Pale Moon browser.
Everything working normal.
Gatotray showing very small amounts of activity.

@bigpup

I'm running F96-CE_4 and not seeing this issue.

Running a frugal install on a usb stick with a save file at the moment.

I updated Firefox via the 'Help tab' and 'About' as I always do with this version of Puppy and its currently running version 102.14.0ESR quite happily.

Hm. Strange...

I'm currently posting this from Firefox 115.1.0 ESR.

I re-built the 64-bit Firefox ESR portable with the new release around 2-3 weeks ago, and have been using it almost continuously ever since. Normally, FF is not my favourite browser - I prefer the Chromium 'clones', as y'all know - but this has proven to be so downright reliable (and finally seems to be on a par with the 'clones') that I've just stuck with it. It's been through 2 small point updates so far, and both have executed flawlessly via the built-in updater.

I admit, I may not be the best demonstrator for this, since I don't use any of the current, Woof-CE built Puppies. Currently, I'm posting this from a somewhat 'customized', upgraded Tahrpup64- upgraded glibc, newer kernel from Xenialpup64, the official Nvidia drivers.....a near-as-dammit 10-yr old Puppy. But absolutely everything is running as it should.....

(*shrug*)

In BWP I get an update message box displayed, but it can be dismissed. I don't have any issue with it attempting to download.

I'm not in Puppy at present, maybe a setting change for auto update?

   We are definitely not the right people for this. Yesterday I downloaded the new Bookwurm Pup. Wanted to check out overlays for the first time and in general what the new Pup offers "more". Used it for 5 minutes and realised there's absolute nothing that my very small cutdown version of Fossa95 can not do in comparison. Pointless for me to upgrade.

I thank all that have posted!

Now that I know this seems to be only me getting this problem.

I am starting to think I may have something going wrong with this computer.

Maybe the drive is going bad, memory stick, or motherboard interface with the hardware.

Thanks to all of you, I now know the direction I need to go to find the solution

I am not having fun right now

Note:
There has been times when a browser update did cause issues.
Pale Moon browser had a big issue around v30.
Turned out, a member of their development team, put bad code into it, and did this on purpose

Thanks!!

Just to let people know what I found causing the problems.

The drive the installs are on is going bad.

Read/write is not always good.

Sometimes it works OK and sometimes not so good.

Did a e2fsck of all the partitions on the drive.
A few errors were found and fixed.

But it is still not working 100% perfect.

Well, it is a 4 year old external USB hard drive.

Hate to do it, because it has a lot of stuff on it.
May try to completely wipe it clean with a new partition table, partitions, and formats.

A lot of experimentation has gone on with installs to this drive.
It may just need a clean total deleting and re-setup.

I am having a little fun now :!:
