New Extension, Topics List Evaluation and Testing.

After looking over this topic -> viewtopic.php?t=9181 I have activated an indexing extension for phpBB3.

The navigation link is on the top of the page Nav bar called Topics List.

This will be for evaluation and so far only two indexes have been generated. I am not sure it updates automatically or not. And since the extension is vintage 2017 it may not be bug free so testing it out is essential :thumbup2:

It seems to arrange the topic titles in alphabetical order. Is that all it's supposed to do?
How is a new topic entered?

Yes, this extension indexes a forum(s) topics which are associated with a name and acts like a table of contents. Each table of contents can be assigned a name.

It updates the indexes of topics automatically.

This is being evaluated and may not stay onboard the system.

@rockedge :-

Erik, does this new tool/utility/plugin/whatever have any "side-effects" - intentional OR otherwise - that you know of? Or have things been 'tweaked' at your end?

See my post here:-

https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=9188

Just curious, really.

Mike. ;)

Increasing the post count per page is a separate setting and should be rock solid.

The new extension just deals with indexing a forum's topic titles and is still experimental on this forum for now.

Topics List. I like it! Good addition to the search option. :thumbup2:

Now I see why I have for many years moved (Solved) from the beginning of a topic title to the end. Before, I could never justify why it belonged at the end.

Perhaps make the list not too big, e.g. may become too much if contains every subsection, may be enough just main sections (just thinking out loud).

I do not know if everyone sees this or just us moderators.

Well, I saw it and had to try it.

In the list that shows.

If you look over to the right side.

A listed item has a remove (green color) you can click on.

I tried it for one of the listed items by me.

That listed item is gone and no longer shows up in the list.

WHAT HAVE I DONE!  :?:

If I close the list and open it fresh from the topics list selection.

That listed item I removed is still not showing in the list.

@bigpup From which index list did you delete from? I can delete and regenerate that list and see if it returns!

By the way, I can confirm that the extension does regenerate the list when I click on "Reload current page" in Firefox.

Can I ask if those of us that are but mere mortals should be able to see any of these "Topics Lists" and if so could somebody please explain how it's done.

Regards,

Ken.

I was looking at the list under F96-CE

flash wrote:

I am not talking about using the browser features.

I am talking about using the Topics list and selecting the same index again from it.
What I removed is still removed.

I even tried to log out of the forum and re-login.

I am using Seamonkey browser v2.53.7.1, but it has worked OK on everything else in the forum.

Also tried deleting all the browser stored data.

Deleted forum cookies, which made me have to re-login.

These had no affect on what I am reporting.

At the top of the forum, you are not seeing a link "Topics list"?

Click it and select from drop down list of forum sections.

Ah thanks for that. Have had a quick look and it looks quite good but am on my very old phone just now which has it's limitations. Will have a better look later.

@bigpup I tested it also and have the same results! I could not get the topic to be added back to the list after removing it.

I can't seem to find a way to do it either.......after trying to delete the index list then re-creating that list, the removed topic still did not return to the list.

Does the <remove> mechanism just remove the topic from the list or is it really gone? As is the topic deleted? That we must determine first.

UPDATE: the Topic List <remove> function does NOT delete any topics.

@bigpup I found the way to add and return a removed topic to the list but it involves enabling a setting that I need to check on more thoroughly on how to best use it.

In principle this feature is enabled on an individual forum basis and requires an Announcement type topic to put that forum's topic index list in. Also then on each topic's first post is the button to add or remove that topic from the topic list index.

This feature is set to inactive at this time. I am understanding that a dedicated topic that is an Announcement or is set to Sticky must be used to insert the topic list into when the feature is activated. This can be set on individual forums.

We are now testing a configuration with the Topic List on forum KLV-Airedale in an Announcement topic.

why is the extension is only available to logged on forum members?

@williwaw I will look into it at a permissions level, otherwise there is no provisions for changing that behavior. It is designed this way. Maybe I can find a way for guest users to see the Topics Lists.

Though guests users can see the individual forum's Topic List index -> viewtopic.php?t=9196

yes the unlogged can see the lists under announcements, so all is well.
I see now you were refering to just the link to the lists --no biggie

@rockedge

Why not remove the option to remove a listed item.

Not even have remove as an option.

I see no reason for it.

I only tried it to test the topics list feature and it was one of the options, when you look at the index list of topics.

@bigpup I don't think it's a good idea to go into the extension and modify the code. The extensions already make a phpBB update/upgrade more complicated than it already is. And only moderators and admins can see the <remove>, normal users do not see or have access to the <remove> function.

If you and the forum moderators can only see the remove option.

Now that we know this as moderators.

Just do not use it by the moderators is a fix for me.

Just do not use remove from the listed topics.

Moderators have all kinds of options we could use, but usually never use.
I for sure have never used some of the ones I could use.

I notice this topic lists is popping up all over the forum for different sections of the forum.

Do these lists self update or update when you open it?

Are they always going to have all the topics listed?

Especially any new ones!

TEST:
I checked a few that I know just had topics added to the section.

Those new topics where in the list.

So, these lists will have, It seems, all topics listed, that are there at the time you access, the list.

Yes, the topic list automatically updates when topic(s) are added or removed.

I am slowly adding a topic list to several forums as we go forward to see the usefulness.

I am waiting for the programming part of this forum to be listed.
In addition, the topics in the programming part should start with the name of the language e.g.:

Code: Select all

How to bash sort files numerically correctly in awk? (Solved)

should be:

Code: Select all

AWK. How to bash sort files numerically correctly in awk?

or:

Code: Select all

Career after learning PHP

should be:

Code: Select all

PHP. Career after learning PHP

So the extension will group topics by programming language.
