Hey everyone. Been away for almost 3 years but I'm back.

Been using Easy for a few days now, just for checking it out since I am one of those super paranoid users. Paranoid from a research perspective that is. I just enjoy to balance on the fringes of security and usability.
Easy serves me well and I'm seriously considering to start using it as my daily OS.

I'm still exploring all the possibilities this OS has to offer and so far it's all good!

One question though I can't find an answer to after doing some searching.

When I switch into the containerized desktop and press "Alt+F6" as per prompt it doesn't flip back. worth to mention, I do use a Macbook Air (don't judge) so that might just make a difference since Apple hardware has a mind of it's own (or is just recalcitrant)

Any thoughts on that? Regardless, Easy impresses me and will keep using it. Thanks to all devs for this master piece.

EDIT: Found the solution. For Mac hardware users to leave containerized desktop: Press fn+Alt+F6 to flip back.

Welcome back!

Yes, some keyboards have dual-function for those function keys, and F1 -- F12 is not the default, you have to hold down the <fn> key.
Curious, because the keyboard I'm using right now also have those keys dual-function, F1 -- F12 is the default, so don't have to press <fn> key.

Good things are happening:

"Language choice in initrd now translated"

"gcc now works with older CPUs"

Or, for something light-hearted, completely off-topic:

"Skippy the Bush Kangaroo"

...I received an email from Rudy that this also screened in Canada, about 1972.

Yes, you need 'easy-5.2.3-amd64.img'
Open it up. In another running EasyOS, this is simple, just click on it, and copy out 'vmlinuz', 'initrd' and 'easy.sfs' into the 'easyos' folder of the one you want to fix.

Nope, clicking doesn't work I think. I installed EasyOS 5.3 on another USB and I downloaded an image of 5.2.3. Once I left-clicked on it it asked me to choose Read-only, Abort or Read and write. Clicking on any of them caused nothing or at least nothing I could see, so I did the # mount-img easy-5.2.3-amd64.img and that worked (same window with same 3 options appeard, but this time once I clicked on Read-only 2 folders opened), but new partition icons didn't appear on desktop - they were mounted as /tmp/mount-img-1-vfat-loop1/ and /tmp/mount-img-2-ext4-loop2/.

BarryK wrote: Sat May 20, 2023 3:49 pm

...everything is easier if running EasyOS, or at least a pup.

By the above I thought you mean Puppy will also open the easy-5.2.3-amd64.img, but it didn't, # mount-img didn't work either. I have FossaPup64 9.5 on another USB.

BarryK wrote: Sat May 20, 2023 3:49 pm

Thinking about it a bit more. It should be enough to copy just the two files 'vmlinuz' and 'initrd' into the easyos folder, don't bother with 'easy.sfs'
Then sync, unmount, reboot, and bootup with the usual password and I think you will be back at 5.2.3

Yessss, back on 5.2.3 - YATTA! :D
Thanks!
Now again to 5.3, but more carefuly this time ;P

P.S.
What is the /media/oby/easy2/easyos/sfs/easyos/oe/kirkstone/ folder? Are all my old versions stored there? Can I clear this folder (as well as dunfell and pyro) if I'm running out of space? Are there any other files I should clear from time to time? Maybe there's a tool to remind about this or do it auto-regularly?

Don't remove the last easy-***.sfs.It is indispensable. The others are used to rollback to previous versions. They can be deleted but it will no longer be possible to rollback to these versions.

The folders Dunfell et Pyro are for some containers. If none container is installed, there are only small files .specs and ./png in these folders

This was also shown in the UK as well. According to Wikipedia:

Running out of space is not usually a problem, as entry-level usb flash drives are 32GB these days.
If you are using at least a 8GB drive, you should be ok.

But if you get into installing flatpaks, beware, you might need that 32GB drive.

Mine is 32GB, but Kirkstone folder is 3711M right now, so I was thinking if it'll be getting bigger and bigger I might have a insufficient space issue. Not gonna happen?

@Vverve

I believe the problem is only related to Chromium.

Hmmm, I wonder if pango is the culprit? /etc/profile has this:

Code: Select all

export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1

Would you mind testing, change that to "0" then run firefox.

If it is the cause, then need to find out if chromium has the same ability to disable pango.

After change and reboot, accents ^ and ¨ are still typeable in Firefox. Not work in chromium and chromium container

NB: With the option MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0, to display the character ^ alone in Firefox with french keyboard, you have to trick (type ^ then a letter like m, ^m is displayed and you delete the m)
This is not the case with the option MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1

NB 2 : For Chromium the extension French Accents (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... mlloeaaaak) allows to display accented characters with cclik and paste.

Ok, so I've decided to finally do an update from 5.2.3 to current version. I've downloaded the easy-update script, but after clicking Yes on the decompression dialogue window, nothing happens...
Image

I tried terminal, but that's not working either.

Code: Select all

# gunzip easy-update.gz
gzip: easy-update.gz: not in gzip format

Gimme a hand please :)

Frugal install -older intel processor i5

Review EasyOS Kirkstone-series version 5.3.1
I was able to compile with gcc now, before I couldn't.
Samba is working.
Everything else is the same.

Rite, did that and it looked like update went fine.
However I've got another error now...
Image

Red lines (where green arrows point) says (translating from Polish):

Code: Select all

ERROR: /mnt/sdb2/easyos/sfs already exists
Now I fell (or I'm in/stuck or not sure how to translate this) into layer of initramfs file.
Press CTRL-ALT-DEL key combination, to reboot the computer,
or HOLD THE POWER BUTTON, TO SHUT DOWN.

My Easy USB on Ubuntu.

How to fix it this time?

I was a bit worries when it asked me to choose the keyboard layout and create a password, especially it looked like it's stuck afterwards (nothing was happening within 10 minutes, no signs of any process), but I left it with deep faith. I returned after an hour and looking at MY desktop was a relief :D

Thanks!

Yes, there are some issues with the update to 5.3, like that requirement to type "exit" for bootup to continue.
However, this upgrade of fscrypt v1 to v2 is a one-time-only problem, an essential change, that had to happen, from now on updating should be "smooth sailing".

Easy 5.3.2 has been delayed. I expect to release it about 2 days from now.

The reason is this:

viewtopic.php?t=8844

I compiled the 5.15.114 kernel with the vmwgfx.ko module.

Fine, but then realised need xf86-video-vmware package for Xorg, but that requires libxatracker.so*, which is in mesa -- except it isn't in mesa.

So, in OpenEmbedded I recompiled mesa with the "-Dgallium-xa=true" option, and that created libxatracker.so* and then xf86-video-vmware compiled.

As mesa is a dependency for so many packages, I decided to play safe and do a complete recompile in OE.
That is to be absolutely certain that all libraries are compatible. Probably just being paranoid doing a complete recompile.

It is off and running now, but it is going to take 24 hours plus 16 hours.

So, gotta cool my heels until Sunday, then do some sanity testing, then 5.3.2 should be good to go.

Widnows and (L)ubuntu both move files to trash if we delete them (either chosen from the right-click mouse menu or pressing DEL on keyboard), but Easy removes items permanently, so what is the reason for thrash on desktop? Is there a keyboard shortcut to move files to trash? I know I can drag them, but that's not to smooth. Keyboard shortcut would be helpful.

I have just built Easy 5.3.2, booted it on usb-stick, ran flapi from a terminal to see if any error messages.
No problem, was able to install kdenlive.

Flapi has shotcut flatpak, as well as openshot and kdenlive.

Appi does not have shotcut appimage, because it didn't work for me.
