32bit Chromium 'Clones'

Post by mikeslr »

Links to the last versions of Chromium Clones are scattered on this 7-page, approximately 190 posts, Section. The purpose of this thread is to provide a quick 'index'.

Mikewalsh's 32-bit Slimjet portable, published Oct 7, 2021, https://mega.nz/folder/yaRhwICQ#qODo0dx ... r/ffoQyIQS

Mikewalsh's 32-bit Iron portable, published Oct 3, 2021, https://mega.nz/folder/rDhWTb6R#tc5D8vz ... r/HSp2AIBb

Mikewalsh's 32-bit Vivaldi portable, published April 11, 2021
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... CUWxKCPO7x

Not "exactly" current, Mikewalsh's Google-Chrome version 48 pet, published June 20, 2018, https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... S8Mvp6ol_B

Opera: I don't think there ever was a 32-bit Opera based on Chromium. [Vivaldi is published by former Opera Devs. But personally, I prefer Iron, with slimjet as my 'runner-up].

See peebee's post next following which provides links to recent Chromiums published as SFSes. He has also provided a recent chromium-ungoogled, https://sourceforge.net/projects/lxpup/ ... /chromium/

Important Note: Just because a recent 32-bit web-browser exists doesn't mean your Puppy can use it OOTB or ever. Newer web-browsers may depend on newer libraries your Puppy may lack and which it may not be able to use. See this Thread, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=7542

-=-=-=-==--=--=-=-- Structural Edit

For the convenience of Searchers I've moved the links to the top. The reason for this post and thread (originally preceding that) follows:

An increasing number of web-sites will not allow access except to those using a reasonably current version of firefox or Google-Chrome. So, if your running a 32-bit Puppy, you are generally, probably better off using portable firefox or firefox-esr if for no other reason than that they can be updated (as long as mozilla or some else continues to publish 32-bit versions). If your Puppy doesn't already have one, you can find them in this, The Browser and Internet, Section.

Some web-sites, perhaps still many [and among those This Forum], are not so choosy and will allow access to those using an older version of Google-Chrome or its 'clones'. Google develops Chromium as its 'Test bed'. When satisfied, it then add its branding and '(additional) call home to Google' features and publishes it as Google-Chrome. But it makes Chromium available to other for use AS-IS, or to be modified and published as modified. Google stopped developing 32-bit Edit Chromes iums two or more years ago. Edit: Consequently, you will not find more recent clones.

Well, it seems that in a long Section, with many posts, only a few were relevant to the purpose of this thread.

Not quite correct....

There is no 32-bit CHROME

But there are quite a few up to date 32-bit CHROMIUMs

E.g from Debian, Slackware, Void and Mint

https://sourceforge.net/projects/lxpup/ ... /browsers/
https://sourceforge.net/projects/lxpup/ ... /chromium/

Builder of LxPups, SPups, UPup32s, VoidPups; LXDE, LXQt, Xfce addons; Chromium, Firefox etc. sfs; & Kernels

AFAIK Chromium builds don't support DRM, and it's a proprietary blob that cannot be rebuilt for x86 or copied over from Chrome. Does Spotify work with these browser packages?

You're partially correct, Dima. Google deprecated the 32-bit builds of Widevine - their proprietary DRM solution - nearly 3 years ago. This is the main reason I've set-up an install of my favourite 32-bit Pup (Xenialpup 7.5) making use of peebee's "64-bit compatibility SFS" in order to run modern 64-bit browsers, along with Fossapup's original k5.4.53 kernel. It all works very well, and it works for me because I'm a keen sci-fi nut.......I couldn't do without my regular 'fix' of NetFlix!

Chromium builds have always supported Widevine, however. Just place the WidevineCDM directory - you can 'borrow' this from Chrome itself - anywhere within the main 'chromium' directory, and the browser will pick it up, recognise it and use it. Chrome itself is only a 'clone' of the Chromium source code, after all, so it stands to reason it would be supported in the 'original' code. Google do NOT specifically add this capability in themselves when they release Chrome; it's there right from the start.

Formerly, you had to manually enable EME - Encrypted Media Extensions - in the settings, but this occurs automatically now.

32-bit builds of these browsers + 'clones' cannot use DRM any longer. That's ONLY because 32-bit builds of Widevine are no longer available; I'm convinced the capability for doing so still exists within the source code from which these are built. But ALL 64-bit builds definitely can..... :D

Hi peebee,

I thought about starting this thread while responding to this thread, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=8673. Figured I'd work my way thru this Section, providing links in the OP as I found them. Slimjet was then at the top of the Section. Then somehow I stumbled upon a post which lead to your 32-bit Chromiums and Ungoogled-Chromiums. Having misstated the state of affairs on the above thread, I edited my post on the above thread and provided a link to your offering on sourceforge, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 852#p88852. Then got distracted.

Thanks for added those links in your above post.

I've edited the OP. I'll get back to working my way thru this Section and providing links to the OP as I find them. After breakfast. If I don't get distracted again.
