Slacko 7 - unable to set wallpaper

Greetings everyone, I am new to Slacko. I must have messed up probably something with rox-filer as I believe that after I installed packages:

rox-filer-17w-i686_common32
rox-filer-17wi-i686_slack14.2

I lost my desktop. It's black, and no icons are shown. I can't set them back though themes and Nathan wallpaper setter won't set any background neither:

my current rox filer version is 2.11.I think that when you change icon style and apply the change in themes, the screen blinks and flickers. I this means that jwm is being restarted. I know, because I tried it in terminal with jwm -restart, but now, when I click on apply once I set them, nothing is happening. Any clues where to look for the culprit of this ? Thank you !

@elovelo, Witamy. Welcome to the forum! :welcome: Why reinstall Rox; was there a prior problem with the desktop? Were these programs downloaded from the Puppy Package Manager or, from elsewhere? Would it not be better to start afresh? Assuming you have created a frugal install, it only takes a few minutes and would save a lot of (perhaps) problems created by the errant installs.
Details: It always helps to post details of your computer system; just make/model/ processor, RAM, hard-drive, not lots of unnecessary internal details.

Hello fossil :) I was meddling with Trash application trying to figure out how to make the delete button to work as 'move to trash' instead of permanent delete. anyway, I reinstalled
rox-filer-2.11
rox-filer-17w-i686_common32
rox-filer-17wi-i686_slack14.2

from the package manager. I am not sure if this is really the problem, that is just my blind guess.

Here is my hardware:

Code: Select all

System: Host: puppypc13288 Kernel: 4.4.249 i686 (32 bit) Desktop: JWM 2.3.6 Distro: Slacko Puppy 7.0
Machine: Device: desktop System: MEDION product: E1210 v: Ver.001 serial: FFFFFFFF
Mobo: MEDION model: E1210 v: Ver.001 serial: FFFFFFFF
           BIOS: American Megatrends v: 4.6.3 date: 01/14/2009
CPU: Single core Intel Atom N270 (-HT-) speed: 1600 MHz (max)
Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.org 1.18.3 drivers: intel (unloaded: modesetting, fbdev, vesa)
tty size: 125x32 Advanced Data: N/A for root
Network: Card-1: Realtek RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller driver: r8169
           Card-2: Ralink RT2790 Wireless 802.11n 1T/2R PCIe driver: rt2800pci
Drives: HDD Total Size: 80.0GB (8.8% used)
Info: Processes: 199 Uptime: 1:11 Memory: 575.2/2001.4MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.8

and yes, I did a frugal install onto the hard drive. I know I could easily start fresh by booting without the slackosave, but I have set up a lot of things already and I just want to spare myself the hassle of redoing it all over.

@elovelo
Just a guess...
From what i can see it looks like rox is not running as desktop.
Maybe one of your new installs has changed the wrapper script for rox to start?
You can try to run roxfiler -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin in a terminal to see
if rox starts the desktop.

Hey HerrBert, thank you for the tip. I have tried it and the only thing that changed was the background color from black to grey and a 'Home' Icon appeared but I cannot open it, it does not respond to a mouse click.

In the meantime I created a new slackosave session and set it up from the ground up. I will keep the faulty one for further debugging if anyone else has some more ideas.

:welcome:

Trying to install what you did install just messed up what was already part of Slacko.

There are parts of a Puppy Linux operating system, that you just do not want to try and mess with.

You found one of them.

Rox is more than just the file manager.

DO NOT TRY TO UPDATE IT OR CHANGE ANY OF IT'S files versions.

About adding software to Puppy.

You need to read this info:

Rox file manager just does not have this feature.

That is why Puppy has the trash icon on the desktop.
Which is more than just an icon.
It is a Rox application program.

If you want to put something in the trash.

Drag it from the open Rox window and drop it on the trash icon on the desktop.

Right click on the trash icon and you will see a right click menu with selections.
