printer troubles

dell optilux 3060
brother HL-1210W mono laser printer, usb connected.
symptoms:
no printing, no test page.
drivers from brother australia
linux-brprinter-installer-3.2.1.rpm
HL1210Wcupswrapper-3.0.1.i386.rpm
HL1210Wlpr.i386.rpm
expanded, made installer executable, ran in terminal.
run CUPS, using ppd file from opt/brother/Printers/HL1210W/lpd/
printer not working, no data download led flashing.
in CUPS>printers, last column says:
~u/sr/lib/cups/filter/hl1210wlpd not available or missing.
it's missing.
edit 1
deketed and downloaded files again as .rpm.
installed both drivers by clicking on them.
tried to print self-testb page
nothing, error msg <filter failed>.
opt/brother/Printrs/*/filters not exist.
pls guide me to fixing this. it used to work, but not now. no trauma i know about.
