Hello everybody:

Is there any way to verify if your savefile has been correctly made ?

As always, haha, I am asking late.

I made regularly a copy of my savefile, so I can go back when I made something incorrect.

Until now, I never need to use it (I use a full backup with AOMEI, CloneZilla... for my fully installed puppy) or I never made an error I can't solve but...

Yesterday I found a problem and I can't guess the origin, so I need to go back, I thought It was easy, I used my savefile and that's all.... but the problem is my savefile, It must be with errors, so I can't go back and start again)

So my doubts:

- How can I know my savefile is ok?
-Must I copy the save file when it is not in use (that means using another OS)
-If I copy it when using the Puppy in which it is... is there any errors when you are copying?


I don't want to find this situation again (There is no problem because I made another copy of it using other method, so I can restore it partially...)

Boot in RAM mode (without the save file running) and then copy the save file to wherever. You can also use my save2sfs tool(in my suite) to make an sfs of your save file (you can do this whilst the save file is in operation).

@pp4mnklinux :-

It's never a good idea to copy/move a save-file from within the running Puppy to which that save-file belongs. This is almost a recipe for corruption, as I learnt to my cost several years ago.

Personally, I have a directory on an external drive to which I regularly back-up my assorted save-files/save-folders once a week.

I have my Puppies set to always run the "fsck" file-system check on my 'saves' at boot. Myself, I always run save-folders, so I'm not really certain how you would do this with a save-file. There probably IS a method, but you'll have to see if anyone else can be forthcoming about this one.

To back up pupsave, which is active, you can use the program designed for this purpose - Pupsave Backup.

Usually this program is located in the menu -> utilities.

This is how I back up the save folder. I have no experience with save files, but it seems that they are also supported (see help information - in the picture).

@Feek Thanks a lot.- I tested it and it is another option to do backups without the necessity of start session with another puppy distro.

What exactly are the pros and cons from one to another type backup program?
Time has passed and maybe something has changed in newer puppies I'm not aware of.
Alternatives are always good to have.
I've saved my butt so many times with it so it's been a "if it aint broke" issue for me.

I've never done a "hot" backup, I've always had a second partition I backup from.

I can't explain theoreticaly the advantages or disadvantages of this method, but with it I can make perfect hot backups without any problem.
