How to & repartition HDD? (Fossapup64 install)

Post by FredBassett »

Well, I have the most recent version of alive and well on my ancient Toshiba netbook. It's actually quite lively. Now the big question. I want my Pup to have a bigger yard to play in, which means I want to get rid of the windows7 starter partition. I also have no idea if I should also delete the Toshiba restore partition as well.
The Tosh has 2GB RAM and 256GB HDD (I know. What a POWERHOUSE!). Is there anything I need to do special to achieve my goal to give the Puppy more play room? Several apps I'd like to install - LibreOffice, VLC, and others, could really use the extra space as well.

Is Fossapup64 going to be the only operating system installed on the internal drive?
Is it a frugal or full install?

have no idea if I should also delete the Toshiba restore partition as well.

What is on this partition?
What programs to do what?

How is the drive partitioned?

What is on each partition?

what boot loader did you install on the drive to boot Fossapup64?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

you want to shrink some partitions, but still keep windows?

can you open gparted and post a screenshot of the windows disk?

Basic steps to frugal install, this will wiple out the SSD including windows.
1. USB stick to boot up (I use ventoy and use fossapup64).
2. use gparted to partition the internal HD, (e.g. wipe out the SSD with "create parition table" use MSDOS, 1st partition 100MG with label of boot with FAT32, 2nd partition 2G for FP64.iso with label of pups, ext4, 3rd partition 30G for save partition, ext4, I prefer to label SAV, 4th partttion about 200G with label of data, ext4, 5th parition 4G for swap, now manage flags to partition1 and tick the boot)
3. use frugalpup installer and use Setting and tick to save folder to elsewhere later to SAV partition. 4. install FP64 to pups partition and make FP64 folder and install files to that folder. and careful to make sure to place the save folder to SAV label
4. install boot loader to place in partition 1. and now should be able to boot from the SSD.
These is what I would do and maybe this video may help.

Thanks one and all. I got gparted to resize the partitions so FossaPup can have 245GB to play in and kept the 5GB HDD recovery partition. I had to double check the boot sequence to make sure FossPup was booting from the USB drive and not the HDD so gparted would work. VERY important step.
Once I got that straight, installing FossPup64 from the USB was a breeze. Plus, NO MORE WINDOWS!
