I bought this new Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ARH05 and i have some Issues.

Fisrt off all i can only make bionicpup 8.0 run on it from a usb - the savefile i can save on the ssd though,
but i cannot install bionicpup on ssd 512GB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe 3.0x4? it says something like uefi is not supported? not shure what that means

There is also troubles with the onboard wifi - i have to use an usb device from tp link with rtl 8192cu driver.
The onboard driver is not even visible?

It is not possible for me to make Fossapup run - not from dvd and not from usb - the loading process always stops
right before the windows manager should load - it stops with a black screen with a little white cursor line in top left corner of the screen. from here it freezes and the dvd goes silent/stops.

I thought that there might be an issue with the grafik-card GeForce GTX 1650? funny thing that bionicpup 8.0 allows it though? if fossapup wont? im thinking fossa is never?

Is there any help for these issues?

I absolutely love puppylinux bionicpup 8.0 and would off course like to have the new
fossapup instaled on my harddrive with the onboard wifi working, if possible.

yes it sounds like nouveau doesn't like your modern card. you could try booting with nomodeset appended to the end of kernel line. then if wifi works install the nvdia 450 driver from quickpet.

example menu.1st with nomodeset .....

You have to edit the entry that is booting Fossapup64.

However there may already be a menu entry that is already made for booting this way.

when you boot Fossapup64 9.5
Do you get a boot menu with several entries you can choose from?
If yes.
There should be one that says "fossapup64 9.5 - No KMS (Kernel modesetting)"
Use that one to boot .

I tried it, and the boot with no kms was succesfull! everything was up and running - but i couldnt save or install? i tried to install the nvidia driver to but it wanted reeboot and the install of driver didnt stay in the save or in the install....

could you please run me throug the process?
what do i do after the boot with the no kms?

Is Fossapup on A USB flash drive and booting from it?
If yes.
When you shutdown you are not offered to make a save????

First boot up make basic configuration settings and then do a shutdown/reboot.
Should be asked to make a save.
Boot after making a save and Puppy is running using the save.
Now you can install stuff and it stays installed.

Note:
If running Puppy installed on a USB flash drive.
Stuff gets written to the save, when you click on the desktop save icon or reboot/shutdown.


About graphics hardware drivers.
Is this a laptop that has graphics GPU integrated in the Processor and also has an added Nvidia GPU graphics hardware?
Thus two graphics GPU's and there hardware.
If yes.
Puppy does not support this laptop setup. Does not have needed support software.
Puppy will only use the graphics hardware integrated into the processor.
These laptops are designed to use the integrated processor graphics for normal stuff and auto switch to the Nvidia hardware for high demand graphics.
Puppy can not do this auto switching, so uses the processor graphics for everything, all the time.

To make a save and be using it, so stuff can be saved.
Do the first boot up. Then do a shutdown or reboot.

If you are booting Fossapup as a iso image burn on a DVD.
When you do menu->Exit->Shut Down or Reboot.
It should be giving you option to make a save.
Usually you have to choose to make the save on the internal drive in the computer.

If you do the iso image burn to the DVD and leave the DVD open.
It should give you an option to put the save on the DVD.

So, you are not getting this make save option?

What exactly do you see when you shutdown or reboot?

I am able to do both save and install - but the boot up after that isnt succesfull the no kms option doesnt get saved - so the load stops right before the jwm load at the end of the bootup? the same if i try to install the nvidia driver - it doesnt seem to get saved?

is it possible to make a save with the no kms option - that actually works?

We need to talking about one type of install at a time.

I will assume the DVD install will boot if you use the "fossapup64 9.5 - No KMS (Kernel modesetting)" boot menu entry.
For the DVD you will have to always use that entry.
It should be booting and using the save after you make one.

Now for the install.

Installed to what drive?
Partitioned how?
Installed to what partition on drive?
Any other operating system on drive?
If yes.
What other OS?

What installer program are you using?

What type install are you doing?
Frugal or full?
Best to do frugal!!
(Frugal is the name, it is still the complete Fossapup)

Do you know what boot loader you installed?

Probably need to edit the boot menu entry and put nomodeset in it.
But I need to know what boot loader you installed to know what boot loader file is providing the boot menu.

You need to be detailed on exactly what you do.

It is possible to boot from a dvd using the no kms option - everything is up and running, even the onboard wifi card.

from here - i cant make any form of save or install work - fossa is saved or installed, but it is not possible to boot it again. doesnt matter if i use usb or harddrive. I cannot find out to save the no kms option with the install-save. i cant make the grub2 work? I think?

the bionicpup works from a usb frugal with the savefile on the harddrive (also with the savefile on usb - but that seems slower to boot and save on) here i have to use an external usb wifi. puppy doesnt find the onboard wifi card. here the grub4 default is used without problems.

If you have Fossapup installed on a USB or the hard drive there has to also be a boot loader installed.
The boot loader will have a config file that provides the boot menu.
Depending on the boot loader installed.
The config file will be:
syslinux.cfg
menu.lst
grub.cfg
or something else with a similar name.
So, look on the USB or hard drive for one of these files.

Open the file in a text editor.
You need to add the nomodeset to the entry that is used to boot Fossapup.
Where you put it depends on what is in the boot entry.
It will have a linux line, a kernel line, or a append line in the entry.
Put nomodeset at the end of the line.
Example for grub.cfg entry: May work better if you put nomodeset after vmlinuz in the linux line.
example:

Save the change.
Now boot with this boot loader modified entry and it should boot.

So now, at last, im up and running! with save and all! wifi working with onboard card! the distro on an usb stick with grub2.

a few things though:
I would have liked the save file to be on the ssd of the computer (bionic does that without troubles, and it seems faster). but the save doesnt offer the ssd only the usb? i havent succeded in installing to the ssd yet? dont know why.....

on Bionic i had succes with boosting audio levels with this suggestion from Ally http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=115613 dowloading the asound.conf.gz as shown. but it doesnt work in fossa?

And then off course there is the question about the nvidia driver? would it make any difference if i installed the latest nvidia 450 driver from quickpet? would it make the geoforce grafik work do you think?

I run on a Lenovo IdeaPad S145. I have another computer that is much, much better and runs Windblows 10. I rarely use it. It’s main purpose in life is to gather dust bunnies. I use it for a recording studio (I’m a guitarist).

My Lenovo is strictly a Linux machine. Formatted ext4. If you’re doing a dual boot (Windows, Linux) I won’t be of any help. As a matter of fact I’m not even going to go there. I’ll only address the WIFI issue. The rtl8821ce pain in the arse. Here's a link to how I get it working - viewtopic.php?p=10253#p10253

On laptops that have graphics integrated in the processor and also a separate graphics card.
Puppy does not support using the separate graphics card.
Puppy only uses the processors integrated graphics.

You do not say what processor is in your laptop. There could be several ones.
I know little about AMD processors, but I think the one you have has integrated graphics.

The idea of these duel graphics setups in laptops, is to use the processor integrated graphics for normal stuff and auto switch to the added graphics card, for high demand stuff.
Puppy does not have needed software and setup to do this auto switching. So Puppy just uses the processors integrated graphics for all.

There has been some work on getting this duel graphics working in Puppy, but I do not know of anyone getting it to correctly work.

If you have what I think you have as a processor.
The integrated graphics in it is going to work very close to as well as the Nvidia graphics card.
Unless you are going to try and run a very high graphics demanding game.
Puppy will work OK and graphics will be fine. Not so bad, even with a high demanding game.

Maybe start new topic about the laptop and using the added Nvidia graphics.
This will let someone that has worked on this, see it, and maybe can give you better help.

I hear you Bigpup - i have attached screenshot from nvidia (i tried to install it) it seems it uses the geoforce grahics card?
Im not shure how to test it - and test if the effect is bigger than with the default driver.
