Frugal installed
Fossapup64 9.5 Linux 5.4.53
on an old Dell dimension 5150

Hi I'm trying to install CUPS, so using setup - CUPS printer wizard, I have download and extracted the zip file to the folder - screenshot below.

What do I do now?

CUPS should already be installed in fossapup64. No need to tinker with this....
In a web browser type http://localhost:631 to get access to CUPS configuration interface.

Adding a printer you may have to install a driver for your device.
We can not even guess, what printer you want to install.

Yes, my mistake, no need to download the zip file.

I want to add an Epson Expression XP-245 that is connected to the router by wifi

In CUPS
Discovered Network Printers:
is just blank

Does Fossa have peasyPort as in CUPS instructions?

Ok, so the firewall was the problem, I turned it off.

Printer shows up as installed ok now in CUPS, but all it does is pull the paper through without printing anything.

Restarted everything and still same problem.

It does the same if I send a test page from CUPS - it just spews paper out continually, not just one sheet, but continuous.

Printer still works fine and prints properly on my Windoze laptop and on a Mint laptop.

Frugal installed
Fossapup64 9.5 Linux 5.4.53
on an old Dell dimension 5150

everything else working fine

This command will sometimes work if a modern printer is set to a specific ip address.

Generic:

lpadmin -p myprintername -E -v ipp://10.1.2.3/ipp/print -m everywhere

The "printername" is just the label you want to use for the printer.

For a Brother printer I used:

lpadmin -p HL-L2340D-ipp -E -v ipp://192.168.1.105/ipp/print -m everywhere

When this works it's like magically pulling the print information from your printer itself.

Thanks, but I'm not enough of a Linux expert to know whether you mean type that in a terminal or insert it in a particular file somewhere? Please let me know thanks.

Then do no try it. It doesn't sound like you know how to set your printer to a fixed ip address.

I used Puppy quite a lot about 15 years ago and found forum users very helpful, my experience so far is they are still very helpful. I'm no Linux expert, and don't pretend to be.

But according to your own standards ...... I'd advise you to stay away from the forums ...... It doesn't sound like you know how to help people.

I'll wait for a helpful person ....

Sorry, that response sounded wrong. But I have little Linux experience myself so it would be like the blind leading the blind. Getting into your printer settings could mess with your Windows printing and I do not wish to create new problems for you.

No problem

I'll experiment when I get time anyway as I'm not afraid of breaking Fossa .... it so easy to reinstall, particularly as I'm not using it for anything serious or important at present.

@k1e3w5
I'm afraid, i can not help you with your specific printer problem.
I'd suggest you start a new thread in the Users forum using an explicit subject...

Good luck

It seems to me that if the printer does anything at all when Puppy tells it to print something, then it must be connected to Puppy and CUPS is doing something.

This is true. If when you hit the print button the printer spits out blank paper, then cups is seeing the printer and sending a file to it.

But about a year ago I bought a new Epson printer and tried for a solid day to get it working with both fossapup and KLV, and had the same kind of results as you, either blank pages or nonsense characters.

After a lot of digging on the net about getting Epson printers working, I took it back to Staples and traded it for an HP, because HP provides a linux driver package called hplip, which is available in the fossapup repo (though perhaps not the latest up to date version) and the HP printers almost always work.

In fact in KLV I get fantastic printing results with HP printers and the latest hplip installed.
