KLV-Airedale-rc12
Kennel Linux Void Airedale Release Candidate 12 775 MiB download size
KLV-Airedale-rc12
SHA1-MD5.txt

Image

Complete system update/upgrade and outfitted with a Void Linux kernel 6.1.14_1 on 02/28/2023

Added the symlink gtk2dialog that targets the binary gtkdialog-8.5 which is compiled against GTK2 which gives access to either gtk2 or gtk3.

@fredx181 has repaired a bug in save2flash and modified swapper.sh to adapt for the /mnt/home device showing directly in Thunar and on the desktop. swapper.sh activates any swap partitions available to KLV-Airedale during system start.

From a suggestion by @wiak added in a modification to w_init that will display icons for /mnt/home partition in Thunar and on the desktop.

New and improved tuning of the /boot directory boot stanza's. improving the reliability of booting in QEMU, Ventoy and S2SG.

Improved and rebuilt initrd.qz including expanded support for SD cards.

Routine system update/upgrade. And wallpapers from @Sofiya are included, replacing some of the stock xfce4 backgrounds.

@wiak has again done more work improving the boot system menus and further improvement to the initrd.gz boot mechanisms :

The iso config file boot/grub/menu.lst is used to boot from cdrom using that internal to iso provided menu.lst (i.e. he currently uses grub4dos for that purpose).
The iso config file boot/grub/loopback.cfg is used (per usual) to provide the boot menu for SG2D
The iso config file boot/grub/grub.cfg is used by Ventoy (but included no Ventoy-compatible entries until my alterations below)

I have made some modifications to all of the above (though have left previous entries in place for later experimentation and possible modification or deletion).
In particular I have provided the ability when booting via SG2D or Ventoy of using the FR modes:

a. RAM0 for session changes in RAM only (i.e. no save persistence)
b. RAM2 save on demand mode back to upper_changes folder (or ucimg savefile) in same directory iso is stored (or in subdirectory if symlink manually made to iso).
c. RAM2 save on demand mode back to upper_changes folder in, Clarity suggested, partition with LABEL 'Persistence' and directory 'Sessions'
d. Direct save (not in RAM) back to upper_changes folder (or ucimg savefile) in same directory iso is stored (or in subdirectory if symlink manually made to iso).
e. Direct save (not in RAM) back to upper_changes folder in, Clarity suggested, partition with LABEL 'Persistence' and directory 'Sessions'

No editing of the presented SG2D or Ventoy boot menus will be required to achieve these most useful FR initrd modes. User just needs to put the KLV iso in BOOTISOS (or wherever it is put usually) and boot...

starting of the pulseaudio system for any user that is logged in has been fixed and improved. Thanks wiak, Sofiya and fredx181 for the exact steps.

Upgraded to a new version of @fredx181 's save2flash, and set LANG=en_US.UTF-8 in /etc/environment as default localization.

Thanks to @Sofiya for the poorercputemp and Display Control packages that also have been added to desktop.

  • Grub4Dos is now included in the System menu. Making KLV-Airedale capable of setting up a boot-able device using GParted and Grub4Dos.

  • CUPS starting as a service has been added and is working thanks to @rcrsn51 spotting missing components!

This is constructed from KLV-Airedale-beta27->rc1->rc2->rc3->rc4->rc4.1 and is equipped with a Void Linux kernel version 6.0.12_1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC constructed with @wiak 's scripts that will extract the Void Linux kernel for KLV. Also has had a system wide upgrade. Uses an initrd.gz based on the FirstRib skeleton initrd.gz constructed by the kernel/module creation script. Firmware SFS is from a woof-CE kernel-kit built huge 6.0.0-1 kernel.

KLV-Airedale-rc5 is just as at home on FAT32, NTFS prtitions as it is running from ext2/3/4 formatted partitions.

Also included is wiak's generate a set of boot stanzas script. fredx181's mksplash has a menu entry and the remaster script is installed.

With the addition of a xfce4 desktop tiling configuration. A tip from wiak for configuring Tiling windows done with the Super (Windows) key and an up, down, left, right, home, pgup, pgdown or end key.

gxmessage in the default rootfs.

save2flash has been expanded to handle persistence on FAT32 and NTFS partitions.
The mksplash GUI utility to create splash notification banners.

The latest initrd.gz brings vFat and NTFS formatted partition support to KLV, allowing persistence on NTFS/vFat systems as well as the usual /ext2/ext3/ext4/swap support.

  • included htop, Grub4Dos, CUPS

  • created a symlink /root/spot with the target /home/spot

  • Auto login cleaned up.

  • includes also the logout logic provided by fredx181 gives true mulit-user support.

  • replaced loop.cfg to the most recent modifications.

  • Debian kernel 6.0.0-3-KLV SMP PREEMPT DYNAMIC is used.

  • added gtkhash

Plus the other important improvements contributed by the KLV team.

Added @fredx181's save2flash utility that can be used when KLV is started in RAM2 mode to perform session saves on demand for persistence.
This is similar to PUPMODE13 in Puppy Linux.

fredx181's swap partition enable script includes the latest revisions and also added are the packages

  • mime-add-1.0_0.noarch.xbps

  • edit-sfs-1.0_0.noarch.xbps

KLV-Airedale-beta25 is able to load squash SFS packages on the fly or during the boot sequence.
Squash files and ISO images can be opened from the file manager and the read the contents.

  • can run with rootfs, 01fimware and 00module SFS files as uncompressed directories.

  • Also able to load compressed and/or decompressed directories,
    once a 2 digit prefix is added to the file name.

  • It is possible to mix using compressed squash files and uncompressed directories.

Also can be downloaded from https://rockedge.org/kernels in ISO->Kennel_Linux->Airedale

Tested both vRC11 & vRC12 ISO file boots. All is well for the limited test, thus far. Thanks!

@Clarity I have been experimenting with the graphics display driver settings in QEMU. When I set it to

Code: Select all

virtual machine Video Card:
Cirrus CLGD 5446

The KLV background is displayed on first boot.

If I switch to the STD-VGA virtual machine Video Card the stock XFCE4 default background wallpaper is displayed on first boot.

So another set of evidence that the video card detection at first boot is tricky.

Well I've downloaded and installed rc12 in the same way as with rc11 i.e. a manual frugal install on an hdd using a partition (sda2) formatted as ext3 using grub4dos to boot. From what I learned from booting rc11 I used a similar boot stanza but this time using the w_changes=RAM2 option. I suspect this is really for installs onto usb drives but it reminded me of what was done in days of yore with pups in order to have a choice as to whether you would save or not at the end of a session. I thought this might be useful and it's working. My boot stanza is shown below.

Code: Select all

title KLV-AIREDALErc12 (64bit) (sda2/12klv-airedale)
  find --set-root uuid () 60e6917a-e1db-44f9-8d58-6f0df737eeb5
  kernel /12klv-airedale/vmlinuz w_bootfrom=UUID=60e6917a-e1db-44f9-8d58-6f0df737eeb5=/12klv-airedale w_changes=RAM2
  initrd /12klv-airedale/initrd.gz

I have done some setting up including wifi, browser, UK keyboard etc. All of these show persistence. Have also setup the firewall with @fredx181 "fix" to get persistence in the firewall settings outlined in the rc11 thread. This is as far as I've got so far. Was not really sure where to post this but as it's about rc12 I thought it best here.

Regards,

Ken.

I'm just going out for my morning coffee so no time to look into it right now, but if you are still up and around in your part of the world @rockedge could you kindly check if your latest KLV-Airedale contains the latest initrd, which is version 7.00 rc2? If it doesn't it may indicated I have the wrong version previously uploaded to owncloud, but I'd fix that once home.

Ah... The latest is definitely in the KLA-XFCEbase I recently published - make sure to also include the w_init that goes along with that. I'll check what is up at owncloud once I get home; I though I had sent the latest up there a week or two ago but lots was going on so maybe did it wrong. In practice, changing rc number does involve a little bit of extra work when already under pressure. But main problem is the efforts to build such beasts leaves my system (and my brain) more than a little disorganized.

I also have to check which is latest KLU-jam; I have been too busy on KLA-XFCEbase and lost track. I built several KLU-jam variants last time round, after releasing what was the latest and to save time at home I didn't change the rc number during tests, which was a mistake as it turns out because now I no longer know which is which or what the subtle differences were! However next one I release will have new rc value.

I started trying to use the package manage menu>system>OctoXBPS. The first thing I tried was updating the the database. On my first attempt (in rc11) It slowly got to about 13% then hung and I closed it. However I tried it in rc12 and it updated almost instantly. I tried again in rc11 and this time it too updated quickly. Guessing maybe wifi issue with first attempt.
In rc12 I attempted to update the database which seemed to go OK. I then installed updates (only one called bubblewrap I think). I then thought I'd try to install some thing. I quite like redshift so I went for that. Searching for this brings up two packages, redshift and redshift-gtk. Both are required. The second also required Python xxx. I installed them all. This gave a menu entry. On clicking on this I got a tray entry. On clicking this and selecting auto I got a message telling me that my location had to be set but gave no way to do this. I assume this has to be done via a terminal. I uninstalled the above packages. I also have redshift-portable-64 which I think is a script. I installed this in/Startup and rebooted and this did work with the the location being found automatically. I also tried to find youtube-get as I use it quite a lot but this does not seem to be available. As this is a noarch .pet I did think of unpacking it then using Menu>Accessories>Create xbps package to make a .xbps package which I could install. Is this likely to work?
I also seem to remember reading that the portable browsers should work however dragging "LAUNCH" to the desktop does not work. I assume this is because I am no longer using the JWM desktop. I did find that launching it using ROX did work. Choosing to make a menu entry also did not work. Basically I'm getting nowhere fast.

Regards,

Ken.

In theory, yes you can create a .xbps package from an extracted .pet or .deb, but in this case it doesn't work 100% because of that the youtube-get3 code doesn't play well with the (very new) yad version in KLV.
Here's a modified youtube-get3 xbps for KLV (it has included older yad version (gtk2) and did some trickery so that only youtube-get uses it, does not replace the default included yad in KLV).
EDIT: will add link here later, attachment failed to include, too large.

EDIT2: here's link, it has also latest yt-dlp included (/usr/local/bin/yt-dlp), that's why the package became larger (2.6MB) youtube-get3-1.5_4.noarch.xbps
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/772 ... .xbps?dl=1

EDIT3: Yes the redshift-gtk program is not very useful, I think too.

@keniv If you can see it in the Whisker Menu (from the top navbar panel) you can drag and drop the icons from the whisker menu on to the desk top. Just like dragging the shortcut icons from Rox-filer to the Rox pinboard desktop. In Puppy Linux JWM is the window manager and Rox pinboard is the desktop.

To create a launcher on the desktop, right click the mouse on the desktop and a menu appears. Select the first option "Create a Launcher" then fill out the information and a desktop shortcut will be created.

Remember KLV-Airedale uses the XFCE4 desktop instead of JWM/Rox

Yes, but you can also drag and drop a script e.g. LAUNCH to the Desktop from an portable application in e.g. /mnt/home such as the one(s) from Mike, BUT better make it a symlink by holding ctrl + shift while dragging.

Did you install this from the PM? (use to be my favorite back in the day...would love to have this again) If so, how can I make it my default filemanager or have as an options FM choice in the file's drop-down right-click?

RC-12 is up and running on two installs. I also installed Ardour audio multi-tracker while running RC-10, and that seems to be working smoothly.

I'm using my base iso upgrade technique of updating the Void system using xbps, then from another pup system renaming upper_changes to [latest number]upper_changes, copying the new iso files, and rebooting. works like a charm.

I'm looking at building a Kennel-Linux audio system. I transfered my lv2 audio plugins from jackalpup, and 733 out of 824 all work in Ardour.

I'm consideriing whether KLV or KLA would be the better choice, as Arch has a lot more software packages available. At the moment I've only booted KLA-xfce and haven't developed it at all as of yet. Then there's the choice of KLA-OT2, which being a lower resource desktop might be the best choice.

Nice to have so many solid options.

Thanks @wiak @rockedge @Sofiya @Clarity @fredx181 and everyone else whose been contributing and testing.

This also worked. Easy to rename it to Palemoon but I could not see how to add the palemoon icon. Is it possible to do this?

@rockedge

To create a launcher on the desktop, right click the mouse on the desktop and a menu appears. Select the first option "Create a Launcher" then fill out the information and a desktop shortcut will be created.

Had a bit of a problem with this. I had to save the palemoon.png to /usr/share/icons before I could give the launcher an icon. I also had to mark it as executable. If I right click on it on the desktop launcher and choose Open with Geany it is shown as Palemoon.desktop but it's in/root/Desktop not /usr/share/applications so there's no menu entry. Is this what I should expect? The contents of Palemoon.desktop are shown below.

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Name=Palemoon
Comment=Browser
Exec=/mnt/sda2/Portables/PaleMoon_gtk2-portable64/LAUNCH
Icon=palemoon
Categories=Network;WebBrowser;
Path=
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=false

I added the Categories=Network;WebBrowser; bit in the hope if I copied Palemoon.desktop to /usr/share/applications I would get a menu entry in "Internet like firefox. Palemoon now has a menu entry here which works. I might make a symlink from /usr/share/applications/Palemoon.desktop to the desktop so as when i am lauching it from the menu or the desktop I do it in the same way. This does seem like a bit of a palaver so I guess I'm doing some thing wrong.

If you can see it in the Whisker Menu (from the top navbar panel)

Is it possible to add to this? If so can you tell me how it's done.

Regards,

Ken.

Did you install this from the PM?

No, Total Commander hasn't been ported from Windows to Linux so this is KLV running WINE so I only could get the 64 bit version to go since it seems Void Linux has depreciated the 32 bit WINE libraries from the repos.

Thanks for the Total Commander info.

I need to get a linux replacement for this as this is now becoming a necessary item for me with the side by side sighting on the large TV size screens as well as the multiscreen config of today's use.

Next video card will have 4K ability and this will become a necessity for just about every developer.

https://9to5linux.com/xfces-thunar-file ... s-and-more

The big news is that Thunar now finally features a split view, allowing you to use the file manager as a dual-pane file explorer/commander

For Split View. Use menu bar View -> Split View
You can always also of course open multiple Thunar windows.

Regarding ftp, smb and similar, assuming appropriate gvfs addons are installed:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/thunar
Using Thunar to browse remote locations

Since Xfce 4.8 (Thunar 1.2) it is possible to browse remote locations (such as FTP servers or Samba shares) directly in Thunar. To enable this functionality, ensure that gvfs and sshfs (as well as gvfs-smb if you need SMB/CIFS support) are installed. A 'Network' entry is visible in Thunar's side bar and remote locations can be opened by using the following URI schemes in the location dialog (opened with Ctrl+l): smb://, ftp://, ssh://, sftp://, davs:// & followed by the server hostname or IP address.

Not sure if I understand well if it works for you or not, anyway:
I tested doing similar, and works for me, runs from the Desktop and after copying to /usr/share/applications/ it runs OK from the (Whisker) Menu too.
Are you sure the path at the Exec= line is correct ? sda2 should be mounted on /mnt/sda2 I always use /mnt/home as it's always mounted (on a regular frugal install) for example I have Exec=/mnt/home/Brave-portable64/LAUNCH
Why symlink from /usr/share/applications/ to the Desktop ? Just copy it, I'd say.

Created a web page for a splash page for perhaps a Distrowatch submission. It's getting the stuff together that's required that is the challenge.

Here it is based on the same bootstrap 5 template as the F96-CE page because it's licensed for free use commercially and privately.

Yes it does work for me.

Are you sure the path at the Exec= line is correct ?

Well I used right click on desktop>Create Launcher. In the option "command" you set the path. If I try and set the path by clicking on the folder icon I have to choose Other Locations then Computer. If I then click on home I am only offered the following three folders spot, void and weedog. I have instead to click on mnt before I'm given the option of sda2. My portables are stored in a folder called portables on the sda2 partition hence the path /mnt/sda2/Portables/PaleMoon_gtk2-portable64/LAUNCH. The artifact Path= is also from Create Launcher. I probably should have deleted it.

it runs OK from the (Whisker) Menu too.

I've looked for a way to edit this menu but I can't find one. I expect I'm missing something obvious but can you tell me how this is done.
I'm also using YRadio as a portable. Also made a desktop launcher for it. Had to install mpv using OctoXBPS. This went very smoothly. I'm listening to it as I type this.

Regards,

Ken.

@keniv I think @wiak might know more about Whisker Menu customization. I'll have to look myself how to do it!

I think there's no customization for applications in the Whisker menu, it is just reading the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications (and probably ~/.local/share/applications too).
@keniv your Palemoon.desktop file is in /usr/share/applications but still doesn't show in the Whisker menu ?
EDIT: it should automatically appear in the Whisker menu, no "fixmenus" needed to do like in Puppy.
