Using Yumi under Wine to Multiboot Puppys from a USB-Key

Post by mikeslr »

YUMI – Multiboot USB Creator, https://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-mult ... b-creator/ is a Window Program that can be used to place several Puppys on a USB-Key. It hasn't had its own listing in this Section. There have been many posts about it; too many for me to consolidate a list of links here. You can find them using https://rockedge.org/psearch/ with the search term 'yumi'. Recommended, look for stevie pup's posts as he's had much success using it. Thanks, stevie pup for bringing it to our attention.

Short version, it will run under Wine. https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=13741. But older versions were reported to work better (the gold ratings) than newer (the silver ratings). My off-hand guess would be that the older versions didn't have to contend with computers using the UEFI boot mechanism. Recommended read the relevant notes on the WineHQ site and the relevant Puppy Posts.

Thank you for starting this Mike. I thought I would run some tests with YUMI to try and give a bit more insight. For the purpose of the tests I used the same selection of Puppies that I used when I was testing Rufus a couple of months ago. Unfortunately some issues did crop up with YUMI, and here are the results.

Firstly, Bionic32, Bionic64, Fossapup and DPup Stretch - All of these booted up without issue, creating a Save file was no problem, and they all recognised the correct Save file when rebooted.

Xenial wouldn't boot at all, couldn't find main SFS file. I tried both 32 and 64 versions, result was same with both.

Slacko booted ok but I couldn't create a Save file. It wasn't giving me any choice of size or where to save it. Consequently it was trying to save a 1Gb Save in some place where there wasn't room for it!

Tahr and Vanilla Dpup, both of these booted ok, and creating a Save file was no problem. However, on rebooting neither of them recognised their respective SAVE files.

Of those 4 Puppies that had issues I didn't delve into them any further as none of them are Puppies that I normally use. And after all, these are the results I got, doesn't mean everyone else is going to get the same, as I'm sure most of us realise by now.

Please Note - I created the YUMI USB stick on my Windows 7 laptop. I've never had to use Wine, so know nothing about it. That's another adventure that someone else might like to try out.
