HPLIP Print/Scan Drivers

Post by rcrsn51 »

I have built new versions of my hplip-print-scan package to support HP printers up to 2022.

This is a combo package containing four drivers in PET form - 32bit bionic, 64bit bionic, 32bit slack, 64bit slack. The "bionic" versions should also work with newer Ubuntu-based Puppies. The "slack" versions work with several Slackware-based Puppies.

Extract the package, select the PET appropriate for your Puppy and left-click install it.

The driver supports print+scan for HP models up to 2019 and print-only for newer models up to 2022. It handles both USB and network connections.

I will upload the package to mediafire if someone will volunteer to test it.

I'm using ScPup64 22.02 but I have only an old HP printer-scanner all in one Deskjet F2180. I can test on it.

I have a frugal install of S15Pup64 RC5 that I haven't installed any printers on as yet. I can test with my elderly network connected HP4500 all-in-one.

Update: Looks like it will be on S15Pup64 22.12 +0-T.

My pups: LxPupSc64 and Voidpup64 with LXDE ydrv & synaptics touchpad drivers, both using savefiles. Ydrv based Jammypup64 (JWM), Bookworm64, Fossapup23 & FossapupFire (LXDE/PCManFM). No savefiles, no fdrvs there.

Started testing on a couple of 'newer' pups, printing only so far.

A success OOTB on VoidPup64 +11. 64b HPLIP pet installed. Firewall off, printer found, installed using the HP Officejet 4500 g510g-m, hpcups 3.22.10 (color) driver. Test page prints correctly.

Failing so far on the slackware based 64b S15Pup 22.12 +0. As above, 64b HPLIP pet installed, firewall off, printer found and installed using the HP Officejet 4500 g510g-m, hpcups 3.22.10 (color) driver. Fails to print testpage with CUPS only showing: [deleted]

Just saw your post re the patch for slackware. I'll retest after installing it.

Patch applied, now prints correctly in the slackware derived S15Pup64 also. I'll play a bit with the scanning later. In general that is not too bad if USB connected but a real stinker if network connected.

Excellent. If I could get some testing from 32bit systems and some Ubuntu-based Puppies, I would be confident that the driver is OK.

I'd be glad to try this with An HP Laserjet P1005 Printer. Please note this is printer ONLY-no scan.

I have sent you the download link. This one will be interesting. Traditionally, the P1005 has been supported by the foo2xxx driver because the HP driver requires proprietary plugins. But the hplip-print-scan driver has the plugin code.

Give people some time to see the topic.

I have no idea how many users of Puppy have HP printers.

So could be only a few or many.

I use Cannon printers, sorry I can not test.

Tested on a pristine frugal boot of fossapup64 9.5. Set up the network connection, installed the 64b HPLIP pet, firewall off, network connected HP4500 all-in-one detected, installed using the HP Officejet 4500 g510g-m, hpcups 3.22.10 (color) driver, test page prints correctly.

My two severely pruned fossapup64 installs (ydrv driven with no or minimal savefile) are CUPS-less so no testing was possible on them.

Thanks. Are you also testing the scanner component?

This is easy - just run the command: scanimage -L

SANE should detect the networked scanner device using the hpaio backend.

I haven't tested the scanner component as yet. I will. I wanted to get the HP4500 printer component live first as that is what my wife uses and it hasn't been working in the newer pups.

OK, the network connected HP4500 scanner is detected in:

LxPupSc64 22.02 +2
S15Pup64 22.12 +0
fossapup64 9.5 pristine frugal install

Not yet in VoidPup64 22.02 +11 although the print component works fine there.

I had to install sane in that but it seems to be working. Firewall is off and scanimage -L latency seems ok. Just no scanners detected (as in other pups if the firewall is left on).

I booted up VoidPup64.

Assuming that SANE was already present, I installed the hplip-print-scan PET. Its post-install script adds the line "hpaio" to the end of the file
/etc/sane.d/dll.conf. But this failed because the file was missing.

I installed SANE from the VoidPup setup menu and manually fixed the above file.

Then scanning worked.

Confirmed here with the network connected HP4500 all-in-one and the patched file in VoidPup64.

Could NOT get it working for my HP Laserjet P1005 in JammyPup32, nor FossaPup64. Description:

Too bad. What driver have you been using - foo2xxx?

I will have another look at the plugin situation.

[Edit] It looks like foo2xxx is still the easiest way to handle a P1005.

@rcrsn51 Actually, if I need to print, I then go to Linux Mint. Way back, I had the ppd for the P1005, but somehow it "got lost" from the several places I had saved it.
I have been trying for quite a while to re-acquire the ppd, but to no avail. I seem to have a problem with the foo2xxx.

I seem to have a problem with the foo2xxx.

I don't know what that means. But there is a discussion about foo2xxx in the old forum here.

Note that this package requires you to manually set up the firmware every time you start the printer. The "hp-firmware-install" script should be in the System menu. If you cannot find it, just run it from a terminal.

Please provide feedback.

Here is something else to try. Use "hp-firmware-install" to load the firmware, then use the hplip-print-scan driver to run the printer.

@rcrsn51 Thanks for the info. I dug a little deeper, and dl'd the .deb for foo2zjs; finally. I have no idea why I could not
find it before!

Because you have a Laserjet 1000 series printer, you don't actually need all of foo2zjs. If you want to look at a simpler solution, just ask.

Most definitely I'd like the easier way. The HUGE amount of files to copy to use foo2zjs was the problem I had. I even went to some forums, and google, over in the UK to try and get the ppd, but have not got it.
This, below, is something I came across, but haven't tried it yet:

1. What OS are you using? A Puppy or a Dog?

2. A PPD file by itself will NEVER be enough to run your printer. A PPD is just a text configuration file. You need a full driver package.

3. Have you tried the foo2xxx package from the old forum yet?

try that out yet.

@rcrsn51 To save me from having to convert the xbps package back to a PET can you please provide the download link to the driver package?

I find I'm spending too much time chasing the links because of the amount of posts I need to read through to find out the actual link is either gone or never existed.

I am going use it, thereby test it, on F96-CE series of distro's (based on Fossapup64 woof-CE built), as it is being polished for a release version. So I can use my HP F4500 to print and make a checklist so F97_1-CE can be generated.

On KLV-Airedale it's already working well.

Puppy users with recent generation printers may want to try the new CUPS "driverless" technology via AirPrint. I have posted instructions at the end of the Bullseye Starter Kit thread.
