That did the trick; printing fine. THANKS A MILLION.

Excellent.

On your original try, both the foomatic and hpcups drivers should have appeared at the top of the Models list. So it would be easy to find the right one.

When you have some time, please try your other printer. It should not need the firmware setup. Just pick it off the Models list.

FYI. On the above link, I have posted a different hplip-print-scan package. It is an older version 3.18.6 and works with Puppies like Xenial and Bionic. I have found that hpcups often works better than foomatic and may be the preferred driver when possible.

The other printer, HP Laserjet1022 has been loaned out to a friend, and is unavailable for a while.
I also have a network, color Laserjet printer: Dell 1760nw that uses the Xerox 6000b.ppd driver.
Would you want me to try installing that one? If yes, be advised it will have to be in a few days,
as I'm very busy elsewhere. Thank you again so much, for all your assistance.

@tosim: I have posted a simpler version above that just uses the hpcups driver. So there is now only one choice when selecting your P1005 printer in CUPS.

@rcrsn51 I'm assuming that is "hplip-print-plugin_3.18.6_amd64"?

Yes, along with the new firmware file. It no longer contains the foomatic stuff that was causing problems. I also removed the scanner components because the Laserjet 1000's are printer-only.

This made it easier to build a version specifically for Slackware Puppies.

Yes. According to the HPLIP documentation, the 1022 does not require a firmware download, so you would only need to install it in CUPS.

But we won't know for sure until you try it.

Thanks. BTW-Tried installing the into the S15,64Pup with each of those 2 of your drivers(and using the firmware with your first one), however, would not install.

I just tested S15Pup64 and it worked for me. It is Slackware-based so you must use hplip-print-plugin-slack_3.18.6_amd64.deb.

What do you mean by "would not install"?

@tosim: I have redone the project to a simpler form. It is using the foomatic driver again.

Make sure that you see Step 2a.

@rcrsn51 Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean be step 2A? Also, I do not have the "hplip-print-plugin-slack_3.18.6_amd64.deb".
Is this one you provide? Thanks for your assistance(and patience).

@rcrsn51 I just wasted a lot of time scrolling through this topic searching for the link to the actual package and it does not appear to exist. That's disappointing and extremely frustrating to continue to try to work with any of this while trying to get F96 out the door before it's also useless.

Now I'm pissed off I didn't download more copies of it immediately. IF you can find the extra time, could you provide a link again for a copy?

I also can just toss the HP F4500 and call it a day and use a different printer.

@rcrsn51 Your new link printed fine in S15,64b, on my HP1005 Laserjet. I could not get it to
print when using the network printer,Dell Color Laser Printer1760nw. Printer recognized in cups, but would not
printer using what cups showed, nor the(originally recommended) driver: Xerox6000B. Note that Xerox6000B
was no longer on the Xerox list on cups. (I then installed the ppd.deb file I had, to see if that would work, how-
ever it did not.

Excellent. This procedure is simpler than using the HPLIP plugin system.

People who follow my Starter Kit thread know about "driverless" CUPS printing to units that are Apple AirPrint-capable. AirPrint is wireless technology and most printers made in the last five years can do it.

The same idea works with scanning - one SANE backend that recognizes many printer models. This is a godsend because the printer vendors have never standardized their own scanner drivers.

Recent Linux releases like Debian Bullseye can easily implement AirScan but older OS's cannot, so I have compiled the sane-airscan backend from here. There are two versions - the "bionic" PET is forward-compatible with other Ubuntu Puppies and the "slack" PET works with various Slackware releases. Note that they are 64bit.

1. Install the appropriate PET.

2. Set your printer on WiFi.

3. To test for AirScan, run the command "airscan-discover" or "scanimage -L". It may take two tries for the unit to be detected.

4. Run Xsane. If Xsane gives you multiple choices for a backend, choose airscan.
