China’s first photonic chip production line to be ready in 2023

Compared with electronic chips, photonic chips offer higher speeds and lower power consumption. The calculation speed and transmission rate are 1,000 times those of electronic chips, according to the newspaper.

If all goes as planned with the facility, it will show that the preliminary experimental research and development process is in place, with production technology that leads the world, analysts said.

According to the Beijing Daily, the production line will be built by Sintone, a Beijing-based high-tech enterprise.

The facility can meet market demand in multiple fields including communications, data centers, medical testing and other sectors, said the report, citing Sui Jun, the president of Sintone.

Thx for info. Optical computing looks interesting.

Bear one thing in mind.

Optical fibre cables have proved to be a huge improvement over copper cables in terms of what you can do with them. Yet they haven't made things x1000 faster. Rather, they've speeded things up a bit, but introduced the ability for the cables themselves to carry hundreds of times the amount of data.....

Optical technology, from what I can see of things, will invariably get used for sheer volume of data rather than ultimate speed.

Mike. ;)

Northern Telecom (Canada's biggest electronics company at the time) bought a patent from an
inventor in this field (fast switching in glass fibres) for about a billion dollars in 1990s --> a spinning mirror.
Not surprisingly it then proceeded to
declare bankruptcy in 2009. Horrible management!!

The Chinese now have access to these patents which are in the public domain.
