Hello,
I want to do a fossaPup 64 frugal install.Everything is OK except that I don't know how to install my printer. I downloaded the drivers found there : https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloa ... mfc7460dn_ to ~/Downloads
. I installed the .deb
But they say that the drivers can be installed only with the terminal. But I don't know to do that! The instructions are :

"Step1. Download the tool.(linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-*.gz)

The tool will be downloaded into the default "Download" directory.
(The directory location varies depending on your Linux distribution.)
e.g. /home/(LoginName)/Download

Step2. Open a terminal window.

Step3. Go to the directory you downloaded the file to in the last step. By using the cd command.

e.g. cd Downloads

Step4. Enter this command to extract the downloaded file:

Command: gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-*.gz

e.g. gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.1.1-1.gz

Step5. Get superuser authorization with the "su" command or "sudo su" command.

Step6. Run the tool:

Command: bash linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-* Brother machine name
e.g. bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.1.1-1 MFC-J880DW

Step7. The driver installation will start. Follow the installation screen directions.


When you see the message "Will you specify the DeviceURI ?",

For USB Users: Choose N(No)
For Network Users: Choose Y(Yes) and DeviceURI number.

The install process may take some time. Please wait until it is complete."

So, I tried to do it....
Step 1 and 2 : of course, no problem
Step 3: I wrote ~cd Downloads.
bash: /root/cd: No such file or directory
I tried ~/Downloads/linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3-1.gz
bash: /root/Downloads/linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3-1.gz : Permission denied
How can I do?

Hopefully what you did installed the driver & setup printcap. For wireless printing:-
The web browser Cups Admin is likely your next step. You will need your printer's ip address.
(you can set this via your printer's front panel LCD menu)
Open your web browser & run 127.0.0.1:631 - should load Cups interface.
Choose Administration, then Add Printer.
For wireless, I use Appsocket option. Select that & click Continue.
In Connection box, type:- socket://your printer ip address:9100 & click Continue.
Enter a name (I just use b) & click Continue.
Click on Brother in box that appears & click Continue.
Scroll & find your model in box that appears & click Add Printer (might have to scroll to see that).
[NOTE: - you may have to try an approximate model if your prior commandline efforts failed].
Set your Media size & default Resolution (bottom middle of screen) & click Set Default Options.
In about 5 seconds, a summary will show.
Click Administration BOX in MIDDLE LEFT of screen (NOT TOP MENU ONE) & set as Server Defailt.
Hopefully, printer should then work.

This is what you need to do to install the software.

I just did it to see what they provide and what you need to do.

If this is the file you downloaded:
linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3-1.gz

In Roc file manager.

Navigate to the location you downloaded the file to.

Right click on the linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3-1.gz file.

From the right click menu select UExtract.

A UExtract window will open.

Just click on OK.

This will UN-compress the file and place everything in a folder named linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3-1.gz.extracted.
This folder will be located in the same location as the file.

Open the folder and inside will be a file named:
linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3-1

To run the file you will need to give it execute permission.

Right click on the file and select properties.

A window opens where you can check all 3 of the Exec options.

Select refresh.

Close the properties window.

Now you can run the program.

Right clicking on the linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3-1 file.

Select run in terminal.

A terminal should open and show the program starting to run with displayed statements.

It will stop and start at different times asking you yes or no to allow it to do things.

Go through till it completes and closes the terminal.

Now try and do what ozsouth is telling you to do.

Note:
I saw several times error statements about information files not opening.
They probably need some specific program that is not in Fossapup64.
But I think the needed drivers did get installed.

Trying to setup the printer in CUPS should tell you if they did get installed.

It did add a bunch of deb packages to the linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.3-1.gz.extracted folder.
Each one of them can be left clicked on to install.

I do not understand what is wrong. It worked with the usb conexion. But I probably did something wrong and the printer doesn't work any more.
So, I tried to do everything again.

In the terminal I have this

When Installing, I have this :

It's no one fault but puppy, really. It's not the same as Ubuntu. If you can extract the debs and install those instead.

Try to left click on each one of the deb packages to install them.

Do them one at a time.

Let it complete the install before doing the next one.
