version 9.2.19 - some issues

Hello.

I installed version 9.2.19 (frugal install to the internal HDD).

I created a save file and rebooted to find that the OS started like the first boot.
According to the messages while it is starting, the save file seems to be read, but actually it is not. The window of QuickSetup opened. Strangely, the OS shut down without asking whether to create a save file or not.

When I looked in the install directory, the save file was surely there.

The following is part of grub.cfg:

Code: Select all

# vanilla dpup
menuentry 'vanilla dpup (sda4/V-Dpup)'{
  search --no-floppy --set=root --fs-uuid C62EADA32EAD8CCD
  linux /V-Dpup/vmlinuz  pdrv=C62EADA32EAD8CCD  psubdir=/V-Dpup pmedia=atahd pfix=fsck intel_pstate=disable
  initrd /V-Dpup/initrd.gz
}

menuentry 'vanilla dpup (sda4/V-Dpup) RAM mode'{
  search --no-floppy --set=root --fs-uuid C62EADA32EAD8CCD
  linux /V-Dpup/vmlinuz  pdrv=C62EADA32EAD8CCD  psubdir=/V-Dpup pfix=ram
  initrd /V-Dpup/initrd.gz
}

I wonder if i did something wrong.

Before the reboot, I installed an input method (scim).
It seemed that there were two processes of scim, one as root and one as spot. There were two icons of scim in the tray. This is not what I intend to do. I would like to know how to avoid scim running doubly.

As far as I see - no. Can you share /initrd/tmp/bootinit.log?

Maybe there's a way to force applications running as root to use the instance that runs as spot. I'll check.

You're either out of space, out of RAM, hit by a bug in ntfs-3g or hit by a bug in aufs. Check if you have free space in the save file; if yes, try to boot with pfix=nocopy to free some RAM, otherwise try to free some space in the save file.

try to free some space in the save file

Before rebooting, I had installed some packages in addition to executing "apt-get update."
I looked in the save file and found that some directories were empty files.
I created a new save file and it worked fine.

Thanks for your advice, and sorry for the mess.

apt-get autoremove --purge, apt-get clean and apt-get autoclean will help you keep your save files small and tidy :thumbup:

Another issue, fairly serious
9.2.19 has no video, amd 5700G using integrated graphics
I did manage to get it booted (very slowly) pfix=ram,nox, did keybd,tz,clock local
But nothing I can do gives X11, seems to hang (xorgwizard gives no help)
lsmod shows amdgpu is loaded
I do boot isos unusually, refind and dd iso to a partition, usually works
Install to hd uses limine (older versions)
tried vesa, also hang
Maybe because kernel is older???

Try to boot with pfix=nox, then rm /var/local/xwin_disable_xerrs_log_flag; xwin; cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log /tmp/xerrs.log. I need to see what's inside /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /tmp/xerrs.log to tell why X failed to start.

Also, if you're willing to, I recommend you to try a development build of Vanilla Dpup 10.0.x. It's unstable and can eat your data, but if it works then we can know for sure that your system is just too new for Debian 11 (and derived distros).

Can you share any instructions how to use scim the way you do? I need a way to test it.

OK, I was wrong,,,it will start X, just really, really, really slow
(more like 10m than 5m) Like it was on a 25mhz 386
The only errors in Xorg log, not find evdev driver
top did not show anything suspicious
Most annoying waiting for keystrokes in xterm (10-15s to display)

Can you share any instructions how to use scim the way you do? I need a way to test it.

1. Install "scim-anthy" and dependencies
2. Install "scim-gtk-immodule" and dependencies
3. Install "fonts-takao-gothic" (any japanese font will do)

4. Insert the following lines at line 43 of /root/.xinitrc

Code: Select all

#im
 export XMODIFIERS='@im=SCIM'
 export GTK_IM_MODULE="scim"
 export QT_IM_MODULE="scim"
 scim -d

5. Execute the following commands
~$ gtk-query-immodules-2.0 --update-cache
~$ gtk-query-immodules-3.0 --update-cache

6. Set the locale as ja_JP.UTF-8

7. restart X

The attached picture shows two identical icons (like keyboards) in the tray.

I downloaded 10.0.43, it booted normally,, ie X desktop about 1 minute
I planned to bisect, but only 9.2.18 shows of older 9.2 series,
and 18 won't boot, maybe because no grub.cfg

I thought of a workaround.

~$ chmod 744 /usr/bin/scim-im-agent

This prevents user spot from running the executable. As a result, only one icon of the input method is displayed.

I still don't know how user spot starts scim-im-agent. Such a thing doesn't happen in other Puppies.

Some things run as spot - for example, pa-applet. If every GTK+ application loads the SCIM module, you always have at least one GTK+ application that runs as spot.

So I tried 9.2.20, just the same
actual boot is OK, but starting X takes 10m, and really slow after started
So I dragged out an intel box, i3-8100,. Everything was normal, 1m to X
FWIW
