Please do not use very dark text colors in posts

There are several darker options for the style of this forum.

You can choose to use one, by changing your User Control Panel -> Board Preferences -> My board style

In some of these darker board styles.
Text that is given a very dark color, will be very, very, hard to read.
Almost impossible.

Please, when you choose a color to use for text.
Make it a lighter shade of the color, so any forum board style will be able to read it.

Usually, if you pick a shade in the middle of the options for a specific color, it will work for all board styles.

Thanks from us that use the darker board styles!

For those that use the board styles with a light or white background.

Too light a color is just as bad for them to see!

Thanks, from all the members of the forum, for taking this into consideration  :!: :D

Certainly anything blacker than black, or whiter than white , even in the wash, would be unacceptable.

I have to agree with this.

I've always had crap eyesight; as I age (disgracefully! ), and cataracts are beginning to develop, the biggest culprits are those that insist on using dark blue for text. This is impossible to see on a very dark background (the "ne_blackgreen" theme).

I have to use dark themes, 'cos my eyes have been permanently sensitised to bright light from my former occupation.....and after a while, black text on a screamingly white background (the usual) just plain HURTS. So, please; have a thought for the rest of us, guys; some of us have issues that others can't begin to comprehend, because they've never been there.....in my experience, a "good" community tries to work together for everyone's benefit.

TIA for your understanding.

Right click -> Select all helps out when some thoughtless person has chosen a color that doesn't contrast with the background you chose.

This is not about a browser display setting.

This is about display options you can make for the forum display.
Personal settings after you log in and your user control panel board preferences settings take over for how the forum displays.

Not affected by browser specific choices.

I change it.

User Control Panel
Board Prefences
Edit Global Settings
Board Style: Prosilver (Dark Edition)

.and after a while, black text on a screamingly white background (the usual) just plain HURTS.

agreed, although my eyes say it hurts instantly instead of after a while.

@mikewalsh do you use sct? from menu>display control>unlabeled far left toggle button to change from xrandr to sct. looks kinda like <>

Then "always on," and as you move the color closer to 1800k, the screen should become more "candlelight" colored, more orange than white.

I have permanent extreme sensitivity to blue light. I can only use distros that have a very effective, easy to find "night color" or "sct", or I get eye pain, headaches, and more permanent damage to my contrast vision.

changing night color through redshift/sct control/night color helps my eyes on both dark and light theme.

I like 1800k, the color of candle light. My favorite way to use a computer is with sct set to 1800, and on a light theme, since I'm already contrast blind enough that dark themes often have a lot of text and buttons that are invisible to me.

Hope something in this helps.

@hundido :-

Heh. Didn't we discuss all this once before? :)

https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=3227

Anyways; sounds like you did eventually discover something that works for you. The simplest options are usually the best, of course.......and you really can't get much simpler than sct.

How do you use it? Do you just run it direct from the terminal, or a script of some kind? I can't remember exactly what you did do, in the end.......though I do recall that many of the solutions we offered at the time didn't seem to work for you.

I remember I put together a very simple GUI for it, a few years back when one of our members first discovered sct. All it does is to use presets; you experiment to find out what values are best for YOU, then you "preset" your preferred day-time/night-time values into it.....and simply switch between the two, as & when required.

3200 - 3400 usually does the trick for me.....

(*shrug....*)

Mike. ;)

@mikewalsh i think the problem was all the versions of puppy linux older than slacko 8.2.1, at the time, had an old enough kernal that it didn't include the firmware for my monitor or something.

With Bookworm and F96, I use the build in Display Control.
There's an unlabeled toggle button that looks kind of like <>
It's the far left one in a row of four buttons
When I click that, it changes the controls from one type of tint to the one that makes the white colors oranger, and then I slide the tint bar to about 1800k

@hundido How does this relate to the topic "very dark text colors in posts"?

Changing the color temperature doesn't make this text more readable
This is how blue text is presented to users of dark themes.

Good Afternoon:

Consider this as my personal oppinion about the internet and posts (never consider it as an "attack" because it's NOT, :)

I don't mind the way each one decides to write or configure his/her posts, because I addapt them to my needs, that is, write the way u want ;)

I use FF plugin DARK READER and I change from light to dark depending on the moment.

Well, the topic is, "Please do not use very dark text colors in posts." Your example of blue text on black looks like black text on black because of the color filters I have to use for a LED or LCD monitor to even be usable for me. Since for me, stuff like your example becomes invisible, it seemed relevant to me to share the experience. It's possible I was mistaken, and almost certain that others will, both physically and metaphorically, see it differently.

If I see a random gap in text, a lot of times I'll try highlighting it with my mouse to see if any text becomes visible. Sometimes, due to formatting, it's not that obvious that something other people are seeing is missing to me.

No matter what forum board style someone uses.

Light one or very dark one are going to have issue for someone.

I have found that the color choices around the middle of the selections are best to use.

I am using a forum board style that has a black background.
The ones in your post look OK to me.

The red is a little dark to me, but I can read it.

When you are in the composing a post screen.
If you highlight text and click on the font color selection icon.
A color chart, will give you a color selection, to make the highlighted text.
Click on the color in the chart to select it to be used.

@glene77is :-

I accept the recommendation, but.....it wouldn't work for me. Personally, that glaring white background hurts my eyes, and makes them pretty sore after a while.

Yes, set it to be the "default", by all means - most will be perfectly happy with it! - but alternatives (including the "ne_blackgreen" that I use.....I think this is the one bigpup uses too) DO need to be available.

After all, it IS down to the individual to find a theme that 'works' for THEM. The alternatives are there; they just need to be selected/applied by going into the User Control Panel. And that's not beyond most people's capabilities.

The ability to select a 'dark' theme is pretty much universal across forum software now.

Mike. ;)

???
This BBcode prevents the problems caused by too dark or too light text colors because it requires to define a suitable background color. You can have black text on yellow background , white text on red background or darkblue text on gray background or whatever you llike. It will look the same with any forum theme and it should affect only text in forum posts. I don't see how this can have an effect on Firefox.

Written using NO Text Colors.

to: BigPup, the Forum Global Moderator
The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
This is not what I expected :

I applied your suggested text colors to
viewtopic.php?t=11152

Very polite Replies from RockEdge and MikeSLR
regarding viewtopic.php?t=11152
declare that some of the suggested text colors are "unreadable".

My Android shows "unreadable" also.

I logged on using FireFox, and I see your text colors as applied.
I logged on using PALE MOON browser, and all your text color problems went away !!!
I will test IRON browser, and several others, soon enough.
Maybe we should all use a "specified" browser.

I am still looking for a "generic SOLUTION" to this problem.

So, I edited my main page,
viewtopic.php?t=11152
to have No Text Colors.

My solution is to erase all my random pages,
leaving only
viewtopic.php?t=11152
until the playground is standardized and cleaned-up.

This "problem" requires a "solution".
