Is there any application (for fossapup) that allows you to write in different languages, such as touch-keyboard (that like a mobile phone has)? I need it for typing in Hindi.

like a virtual keyboard that is setup for typing text in Hindi ?

How about an online version? https://www.typingbaba.com/keyboard/onl ... yboard.php

Well an online one is an option, but it would be better to have it as an application. And a virtual keyboard is not necessary. I am currently following this guide to install an application named Phonetics. I have successfully performed the steps for ibus installation and setup, putting a line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local that automatically runs ibus-daemon at startup. But I am stuck at step 2 like where can I find something similar to Input Sources. I am currently searching it in JWMDesk Manager > Puppy Setup > Language/Country and I can see Keyboard Layout option here. Should I change it to something like Hindi? But most of the times I will want to type in english not hindi. What is the solution here?

I also see an application named ibus-setup which has got a tab named Input Method and an option to add. It looks like this-

I am just trying to add a hindi input method using this. I'll see what result will it yield, and if successful then update about the issue with a reply to this post.

Update: I tried adding Phonetics using the above mentioned step. Now I see a small tray icon at the bottom using which I can change between different input methods. But even when I set input method to hindi, I can't type in hindi. Seems like I have to setup something related to puppy side so that ibus can let you type in different languages.

Another Update: Putting a line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local is wrong! Instead I found that it needs to be started as a tray item. You can add a script for that in ~/Startup/autostart/ to run ibus. The script can be created using Menu > System > Boot Manager > Manage startup apps > Add to Startup and typing in ibus-daemon as the executable name.

When you have it going please post the steps you took. I think this is important and will be helpful in opening up Puppy Linux to more use in some important parts of the world.

The onboard onscreen keyboard seems to work with a Hindi keyboard layout on Fossapup. You might test it:

  • Install a font (like Noto Sans Devanagari from the google fonts).

  • In the puppy xkb manager: add Indian keyboard layout, add hin-kagapa layout variant (or maybe hin-wx?), and configure the group xkb option to change the layouts.

  • Install the onboard onscreen keyboard from PPM. Launch it and use the configured keyboard shortcut to choose the Hindi layout.
