XRDP Now running on DD Bookworm!

I've got XRDP running on Bookworm and serving multiple users and desktops! Very happy.

And all from a test install on a USB thumbdrive. I used the Bookworm ISO for the install, then updated and upgraded Bookworm, then just downloaded XRDP and XorgXRDP via Synaptic from the Debian repo.

I couldn't check it with the usual "systemctrl status xrdp" command but substituted "service xrdp status". It was running and all I had to do was access it from a client machine with Remmina at the installed machine's IP. No further configuration necessary. I logged in with user Puppy and a new desktop opened up.

So cool to see two different desktops working from the same machine, and work simultaneously from both. And the server is just a 13 year old laptop in sig below. The client is the old c720 converted chromebook also in sig running Bionicpup64 natively. As I'm writing the client user is downloading and installing Kdenlive into its downloads folder (via this laptop), and it's all being saved (and running) from a thumb drive. Crazy!

Is sound working and what is audio quality?

Thanks

EDIT: sound didn't work. Ignore that mistake below:

sound was working, wizard, but since I was just playing around on the old Acer laptop as server and C720 as client and wireless through router AND on Running from USB 2.0 thumbdrive, video frame rate was naturally not up to 30, and audio similarly impacted. But actually both seemed better than the former Xubunto20.x/serverbox/ethernet to Fossa64 lappy wireless setup, which is a really good sign.

I'm in the process now of installing DD Bookworm to the desktop server box with the new guts, and we'll see what it can crank out of its fast wireless card. I think DD Bookworm might take better advantage of that (I hate Xubuntu's wireless manager) as well as run faster out of RAM and in a more efficient OS. Also audio processing has been advancing in the latest and greatest distros, and I'm thinking that might be the case with Bookworm....

We'll see! :)

After your experiments with Xubuntu and the great XRDP install script, I set up a server. Was disappointed when running over Ethernet the audio was quite distorted. I did not check latency.

Yup wizard I'm not there yet for a working system, but still hopeful it can be done if we can find the right path. I have heard the big distros are revamping audio, and the version of Xrdp in Debian Bookworm repo is newer.

interestingly, no need for the Griffon script to install. I just did a Synaptic update online and upgraded all packages before installing xorgxrdp and xrdp directly. It just worked from my present Remmina client, set to trucolor24 and Local sound. I just had to adjust the IP to my laptop client.

EDIT: installed and ran from simple install, but sound didn't work and Griffon script is the only way to get there so far.

Having problems with Peasywifi 4.8, on the desktop box install. I'd like another network manager, in fact I'd like Puppy's old Network Manager. Is changing that do-able?

Maybe try frisbee apt install frisbee (should replace peasywifi) not sure if a reboot is needed then for to successfully connect.

Thanks Fred, didn't realize it was that easy!

Unfortunately I'm totally deflated at the moment. I wasn't able to get sound working on the server box through Xrdp. This was confusing because it was working so well last night, using my laptop as the server, all on a USB install. I had my Acer C720 converted chromebook running Bionic64 as client right next to the Lappy server. I ran a short video clip with music to test.

I just returned to that exact setup (lucky it was on a thumb drive with change file) and finally realized the sound was actually coming out of the laptop server speaker, not the client's! They were right next to each other and volume was quite low. Normally the laptop's speakers are muted in Bioni64, so I just stupidly thought the sound was coming from the client.

Well back to square one with Xrdp, and it looks like Griffon't script(s) offer the only hope of getting xRDP WITH sound going. Not sure it will work with DD Bookworm, because it apparently checks for window managers and other things to determine whether to run, and it is primarily geared to buntu flavors.

Heh, I was so confident today I had a working system I reformatted the HD on the server box and wiped out the former working Xubuntu version!

Rescuezilla (imaging program) is your friend.

Thanks wizard but not worth the effort. I had eventually simplified what needed to be installed to mainly xubuntu, the Griffon script, and whatever it pulled in. I didn't have any valuable data in it. I still have the bootable USB Xubuntu ISO for installation. I'm going to continue working with the DD Bookworm for a bit to see if any of the Griffon scripts work with it.

Hang in there and keep up the great reporting. You're helping me and others understand if XRDP can be made to work on Pups & Dogs.

Thanks
