Afternoon, gang.

Uncle Mike really should remember this one, but.....he can't.

I'm having another go at resurrecting the Skype-portable client. Periodically, MS throw a coupla spanners into the works. I'll mess around with it, trying to fix things, then I'll give it up as a bad job and put it to one side for a while. It's nearly a year since I last looked at it, so I thought it was high time to dust things off again.....

Last time, it was bitching about not being able to find the 'keychain'. Well, it's still doing that, although it does appear to log-in OK now.....but now we have a new wrinkle. It takes a LONG time to get to the login screen, because it's now complaining about dbus not launching....

I know I've employed this trick before, but d'you think I can remember how I did it? Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks for the suggestion, Erik.

I found, having added this in, that Skype was then calling for libsystemd-login. Having installed that, we were then back to the old behaviour - when launching from the terminal - of just a blinking cursor. Nowt happening, no indication of what's wrong.....no clues at all.

Needs a complete re-think, I suspect! I honestly wonder why I bother with this thing, sometimes.....

@mikewalsh I had a sudden thought.....what if we took the Void Linux Skype package? Then adapted that base for a Puppy Linux Skype and not use the .deb or take a look at the RPM package.

The theory is the Void Linux xbps package will not have any systemd calls at all and that pesky problem with the login section will cease to be a problem. I have noticed for a long time that Skype can't stay logged in and can not call up the profile from the previous run which is the cause of having to log in every new start of Skype.

We should be able to use xbps-install to just get and download the package then with UExtract decompress the package and see if that will run at all in a Fossapup or Bionic

I will see if I can get a Skype to run in KLV-Airedale-beta17 for a start.

Mm. Could do, could do.....

I've not been using KLV much lately. Since I installed beta16, I've had a noticeable lag in video rendering. Browser playback, media player playback.....makes no difference. It's almost like there's buffering going on for 3-4 seconds, then it seems to get "released" in a rush. Makes watching vids, NetFlix, etc, very frustrating. It's even the same with webcam viewing; the same "hesitate", "release" cycle.....over & over again.

I've swapped back to the Fossapup kernel, but no dice. I've a nasty suspicion it means starting all over with another clean install, but I'm getting to the stage where I simply no longer have the enthusiasm to keep re-installing over & over again, ad nauseam. I like to get a working install, and stick with it. But even if I was to go back to beta15 or even 14, the modifications are still going to be in the 'upper_changes' directory.....and I don't have a clue what's responsible.

So it'll still mean a clean re-install again.

Grrr...!!! Pisses me off. (I suspect the GT 710 is at the bottom of it, myself.....but I haven't even got the enthusiasm to arse around swapping hardware out, either.) What am I like, eh?
