I was searching the forum, to find where to post a report that I fixed a bug in momanager, and stumbled on your Swedish lang pack discussion thread.

Anyway, here is the fix for momanager:

...the bug only affects pups that don't have 'grub4dos' installed.

I am very interested in using your langpack in EasyOS. The latest is 4.2.2, that you can download and write to a usb-stick, then bootup Easy, as described here (note, 4.2.3 coming very soon):

To install the "devx" SFS, just click on the icon labeled "sfs" at the top of the screen.

Then install your langpack PET, so you are off to a good start. There will then be some more EasyOS-specific translations to do.

Easy has a choice of two different MoManagers, found in the "Utility" category of the menu. As well as the MoManager that you find in recent pups, Easy has an "old" "classic" version, with a simpler user interface. You might want to try both.

I build EasyOS for specific languages, with every translation already builtin. So far, have English, German and French builds. You can see them here:

...advantages of doing it this way, are already translated at first bootup, and the WoofQ build system sucks in more translations than are in the langpack.

...notice also the "deltas" folder. These are small downloads for updating. Easy has an icon labeled "update", that will update the installation to the latest version. Those "delta files" or "difference files" have the difference between your current installation and the latest, so just the small difference file is downloaded, and you have updated.

Regarding that documentation about emailing the langpack to bkauler@gmail.com, I retired from leading the Puppy project in 2013! I still work on derivatives, such as EasyOS, exploring new ideas, so Easy is to be considered as an experimental distribution.
No one seems to have stepped in to coordinate translations for Puppy, though you could try 01micko.

If you want to support translations for Easy, you can do what esmourguit does for the fr langpack. Whenever I bring out a new release, he sends me any new translations, usually .mo files, and I add them to his fr langpack. So he doesn't have to send me the complete new langpack every time.
If you can't email them, post them to the EasyOS section of this forum.

The German langpack was created by Lutz Ulrich, forum member "L18L", but the last translation update I received from him was April 23, 2021, over a year ago. Furthermore, he seems to have cancelled his membership of this forum, unless he changed to a different nickname.

For anyone interested, you don't have to generate a new langpack, just translate any new or changed files and send them to me. You could attach them to this thread, or email me.

I did a search of the forum for "L18L" and "Lutz", only found a couple other guys also asking about him:

Note also, Lutz was maintaining MoManager. I wrote it originally, and kept my version in EasyOS, as the "classic" version, as well as the enhanced version maintained by Lutz (and used in most pups).

He was a valued contributor and very active for years.

Very busy as every one with work and time constrained but will help out if i have the files
as i dont have easyos yet installed on usb.

Maybe there is even a github repository that i can clone and just pull and push the required changes ?

For fun, I wanted to see just how much work translating is.

I was confused by the interface of the newer MoManager version.

Getting into the older MoManager, first I got an error that I was still in English, so I went to setup and changed to Esperanto.

Now I've got a purple Language pack needed box. The help path for, "create a langpack" seems to have changed. I can do Menu -> Help and then ->Help Links or ->Doc Launcher, but in neither did I find the -> HOWTO Internationalization

That was as far as I got.

i see that the mo files are located in the following paths.

The entries in the JWM (Joe's Window Manager) menu are in the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/

For example: geany /usr/share/applications/lxrandr.desktop

.mo files are in /usr/share/locale/

find /usr/share/locale/sv*

I just downloaded the easyos and will try to extract this files and upload them
here and also on github.

That way it should be easy to download and update them with the time while keeping everything in sync on github.
So when barry or someone else want the newest version of languages pack can just download it from github and use it direct.

Will write back as soon i extracted the needed files and uploaded to github for everyone to update.

To create a new language like esperanto copy the "de" directory to "fr", "ru", "cn" or what ever
apply the changes, zip the folder, upload it here and ping me so i can add the new changes to the repository and make it in sync with the newest changes.

Best is if you can use git itself and push the changes direct to the repository that way i only need accept the changes and they are automatically added without that i need do something additional.

If git is too complicated for you just download it as zip and apply the changes then upload just the language directory as zip here !

Gee guys, thanks for your enthusiasm.

It is much better though, to be running EasyOS and use MoManager (in the "Utility" menu).

As I explained in the first post, download the de build of Easy and boot it on a usb-stick.
There is no need to install a de langpack, it is already in the build.

MoManager will tell you exactly what needs updating.
Many scripts have new and changed text strings, so a .mo file needs to have the new and changed translations.
MoManager makes this process very easy.

Tonight I intend to look at the "classic" momanager, see what the problems are with using it.

This page explains everything to download EasyOS, write it to usb-stick then boot it:

Specifically, you need to download the German build:

Download both the .img file and the md5sum.txt file.

Then read the instructions in the first link.

Once you have booted EasyOS, you will find the two MoManagers in the menu.

Use a good quality USB-stick, at least 8GB.

A SanDisk Ultra is a reasonable compromise, cheap and fast enough.
But a very cheap usb-stick might still be ok, just slow. Though, at the bottom end of the prices, they tend to be less reliable.

Note, EasyOS has changed since I did that speed comparison. It now boots faster on slow usb-sticks, and runs more in RAM so less writes to the drive, prolonging its life.

Hi, first time that you boot EasyOS, the Quick Setup window runs, and you can choose the Italian language. Or, Quick Setup can be run from the menu, in the "Setup" category.

Everything will still be in English though, as no translations are yet done.
In the "Utility" menu there are two entries for Momanager, choose one of them.
Personally, I use the old one, but use whichever does the job for you.

I would suggest using one of the earlier puppies and become comfortable using momanager program.
Then,learn about SFS files and how to make them

@BarryK , I think EasyOS got added to github since this thread was started. Is MoManager still how you prefer translations done?

I started translating EasyOS to Esperanto using MoManager (old version).

First challenge: I tried to change the keyboard to Esperanto but couldn't find an Esperanto keyboard in Input Wizard > Choose keybard layout for your country... Does anyone have a solution to get an Esperanto keyboard so I can make the msgid "hatted letters" msgtr "ĉapelajn leterojn" ?

When I first searched for an Esperanto layout, I didn't find it too. But Fossapup has it. It's "epo" not "eo". It is probably possible to copy the file to EasyOS if it lacks one. Another solution would be to configure the compose key in the input wizard and type compose key then ^ and then one of c g h j s for ĉ ĝ ĥ ĵ ŝ or compose key then u then u again for ŭ.

Edit: There is a tool - eoconv - that can convert an ASCII Esperanto text written in x-system to utf-8. On Fossapup64, this perl script is also available in PPM.
